[name]Just[/name] curious–lately there have been several Nameberry mentions of the name [name]Viggo[/name], which brought the name back to my attention after first seeing it on actor [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen. Which brings me to my question–I’m liking the name more and more, but wouldn’t using it bring immediate thoughts of Mr. Mortensen to most people’s minds? He’s the only [name]Viggo[/name] of which I know, except for [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Hanson[/name]'s handsome little boy. I was surprised that in her recent Nameberry blog post, A Celebrity Mom Surveys Her Name Choices | Nameberry , she never mentioned [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen in connection with her son’s name. That would be my biggest objection to using the name. I like some of [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen’s movies–[name]Lord[/name] of the Rings and [name]Hidalgo[/name]–but I wouldn’t want people to think I named my son after him. I have the same problem with [name]Ewan[/name] [name]McGregor[/name]'s association with the name [name]Ewan[/name].
What do you Berries who are loving [name]Viggo[/name] think? Is this a big issue? Would you use the name even if you think one out of every two people who meets your son is going to say, “Oh, like [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen?”
This is funny, I was just thinking about this name. Honestly it doesn’t bother me much, I didn’t know who [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen was until I looked him up and then I recognized him. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be associated with him either for the people who would know who he his immediately, you could just say no I just liked the name, it wouldn’t be a big deal to me. Actually after saying all of this I think I’m adding [name]Viggo[/name] to my list.
Well, good! [name]Glad[/name] you like it. I like your style, too. Nice signature names.
Maybe [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen isn’t actually well-known enough to make it a huge issue. My family is really into [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings.
I like it too. I love the sound and the feel of it. I think of [name]Viggo[/name] Mortenson (and I love him ^_^) but it’s not really a deal breaker for me. Really, it could happen with a ton of names depending on the age of the person hearing the name. Some people might hear [name]Cyrus[/name] and think [name]Billy[/name] [name]Ray[/name] and some people might not. Some people might hear [name]Ewan[/name] and think [name]Ewan[/name] [name]McGregor[/name], I don’t, and there are plenty of other people that won’t too.
I say go with it if you love it At least it’s not a bad association.
I’ve never heard of [name]Viggo[/name] before this, but I like it! And I don’t think the [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen association is that big a deal. I had to look him up to see what you were talking about, and even then my mind was drawing a total blank. Like dantea said, some names trigger pop culture references instantly or they don’t. [name]Viggo[/name] is a name where I don’t.
- [name]Athena[/name]
I actually had never heard of [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen since I saw people on here talking about it. I’ve never seen [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings though so maybe that’s why.
I actually have [name]Viggo[/name] on my list for my baby boy right now and I’ve mentioned the name to my family and friends and none of them had said anything about [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen. But I did get a lot of weird looks LOL.
Thanks for the continuing input!
By the way, midnightskies, when I first saw [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen’s name I thought it was probably just an acting name, a nickname or something. I was pleased to learn that not only is it a legitimate Scandinavian name, but it was also his father’s name. Once I got used to it, I started liking it. I think it would be cool to meet a baby [name]Viggo[/name].
Interesting! Thanks auroradawn
I don’t mind it, but I think of the word ‘vigorous’ every. single. time. I hear this name. Like, immediately. Which is not a bad association, but a bit…weird.
I think since [name]Viggo[/name] isn’t an " A list" celebrity and you don’t hear to much about him, not many people will think “oh like the actor”. [name]Viggo[/name] is such a cool, spunky and unique name, that will age so well. I can imagine a cute little, energetic [name]Viggo[/name] running around the park and a successful grown up, who can pretty much be anything he wants, doctor, musician, teacher.
Thank you!
Again, thanks for continuing input!
jeska, I too think “vigor” or “vigorous,” but it doesn’t bother me. Like you said, it isn’t a bad association. I like the name’s “vigor,” actually.
Good point, dantea, that different names have different associations. I wanted to know whether [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen was well-known enough to make the association inevitable, and it looks as though it wouldn’t be as big an issue as I thought.
Thanks, aj_bear and girlymegz!
And agxobsessed, I see [name]Viggo[/name] has moved to the head of your boys’ list! Congrats And you’re welcome.
Kids his age definitely won’t be associating his name with the actor. It’s funny because [name]Liam[/name] is becoming so popular now. I named my puppy [name]Liam[/name] because I love the name, but it’s too popular for me to use now, [name]IMO[/name]. When I say his name to younger kids they will respond and say something like, “Oh, there’s a [name]Liam[/name] in my class!” But when adults hear the name, they all immediately say, “Like [name]Liam[/name] Neeson?” Apparently [name]Liam[/name] Neeson is the only [name]Liam[/name] adults have every heard of. [name]Just[/name] goes to show you how names change over the years. In about 10 years there will be lots of [name]Liam[/name]'s running around.
I feel like [name]Viggo[/name] is a bit Scandinavian for my family to pull off. It’d be a bit out of left-field, given our backgrounds, which cover like 7 or 10 countries between the two of us, but not that part of Europe at all.
[name]Ingrid[/name] is a bit the same to me.
But I don’t think it is unattractive. And I don’t think [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen is a huge problem? I’d like to see it on somebody else’s child.
I did immediately think of [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen, but [name]Heath[/name] Ledger hasn’t ruined my love (independently of my feelings for the actor) for [name]Heath[/name], and he was far more famous and tragic etc.
I do think of [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen but that is because I used to be a big fan of LoTR. I don’t think it will really be a big association with people since like someone else said he is not that popular of an actor. The name is cute and unique.
I love [name]Viggo[/name]. I think that even though [name]Viggo[/name] Mortensen does work a lot he is a character actor so many people don’t know him by name, like they would with a bradley cooper type. I am named [name]Meryl[/name] and i often say “[name]Meryl[/name], like [name]Meryl[/name] Streep” so my name gets spelled correctly. You would be surprised at the amount of people you are unfamiliar with [name]Meryl[/name] Streep!
I agree with everything but the last part. Our name choices aren’t changing. But [name]Viggo[/name] is awesome and you can just say you liked the name. I’m sure you are not the only one who will have to do that and not just with [name]Viggo[/name].
Also, how cute was [name]Natalie[/name]'s combo of “[name]Viggo[/name] [name]Moriah[/name]”?! I LOVED it!
Thanks again, everyone, for more input! I think I’ve had the most positive Nameberry reaction to [name]Viggo[/name] of any name I’ve asked about. Awesome.
stripedsocks, here is where we differ. I think you should use [name]Reuven[/name] (referencing your help with an earlier post of mine) and I’ll use [name]Viggo[/name], all right? ([name]Just[/name] kidding.) I have a Swedish grandmother and a Danish grandfather, so [name]Viggo[/name] could be a great choice to honor part of my heritage.
gigigibbons, I like [name]Viggo[/name] [name]Moriah[/name] too. I did a doubletake, because [name]Moriah[/name] was a name choice my parents considered for a girl. Given its origin and meaning, there’s no reason it shouldn’t be used for a boy, and I love the sound of the Hansons’ combination. I think it must be the variation [name]Mariah[/name], and its similarity to [name]Maria[/name], that make its usage more feminine. Personally, I’d probably use something a little more familiar to ground the unusual [name]Viggo[/name], but I do love the sound of [name]Viggo[/name] [name]Moriah[/name]. By the way, congratulations on your pregnancy!!
