A sibling for Bay... help needed!

Hello All!

[name]Baby[/name]#2 due mid [name]March[/name] and we are having trouble with girls names in particular.
We already have a daughter named [name]Bay[/name].
We love this name, to us it is short but sweet, calm but strong and suits her to a tee.

If baby#2 is a boy he will probably be called either [name]Arlo[/name], [name]Mac[/name] (family name), [name]Felix[/name] or [name]Shem[/name].

But I have a gut feeling it’s another girl and we can’t seem to agree on any names that we love as much as [name]Bay[/name]
Here is our list so far along with the reason I don’t think it’s THE [name]ONE[/name]:

[name]Ever[/name]- We both really like this and I think it sounds lovely with [name]Bay[/name] but our surname is Abbet and with the R-ending the names said together sounds too much like Rabbit?

[name]Thora[/name]- my Husband loves this as his Great grandmothers name and I want to love it but sounds a bit too daggy to me.

[name]Fia[/name]- we both like this but have a neice called [name]Leah[/name] who we see quite often and rhyming names not ideal

[name]Seren[/name]- this is growing on me, I think it sounds nice next to [name]Bay[/name], just not sure it is ‘pretty’ enough

[name]Arlie[/name]- my husbands favourite. I do like it a lot but a bit put off as it sounds a bit insubstantial and made up?

[name]Noa[/name]- I love this for a girl but here in Australia think it would just be mistaken for feminised version of [name]Noah[/name] and we actually have a few friends with little boys called [name]Noah[/name] who would probably be a bit weirded out if we used this name. Hubby not keen anyway

[name]Cameo[/name]- I’d use this in a heartbeat, husband says NO

[name]Posy[/name]- husband says NO [name]WAY[/name] sounds like Poser

[name]Zanna[/name]- I love this name which was just used by a friend of a friend

[name]Calla[/name]- both quite like this but not sure if the A ending sounds too great with our A surname

[name]Shalom[/name]- I love, another NO from husband

[name]Isla[/name]- really like this name but already know a few of these plus our next door neighbours baby

[name]Willow[/name]- my husband really likes but way too corny to have two tree names!

[name]Aster[/name]- another one of my favourites I have let go because it sounds werid with our surname (+ the rabbit thing again!)

Soo… would love to hear any thoughts on our list so far, or based on the above names would be grateful for any new suggestions!!

  1. [name]Noa[/name]
  2. [name]Willow[/name]
  3. [name]Shalom[/name] ( I would work on the husband on this one it’s GORGEOUS)

What about [name]River[/name]. I love it for a girl and I think it complements [name]Bay[/name] well

I agree, [name]Arlie[/name] sounds incomplete to me. I like the suggestion of [name]River[/name], but there’s the rabbit problem again.

Have you thought of:

[name]Bryony[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]June[/name]
[name]Cerys[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Aspen[/name]
[name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] “[name]Tilly[/name]” or “[name]Till[/name]”

Thanks for replies so far!

lori johnson- thanks for the congrats, we are so excited and feel very lucky. Of your suggestions my faves are [name]North[/name] and [name]Lark[/name], however I’d be more inclined to use these for a boy. I think [name]Arbor[/name] might be going a bit strong on the tree theme and [name]Dune[/name] also a bit too ‘coastal’ alongside [name]Bay[/name]?

Dillonsfan01- thanks for ranking your top 3 from my list. You’ve motivated me to try a bit harder to warm DH towards [name]Shalom[/name], as I think it’s gorgeous too… His criticism of it is that it sounds like schlong… Which is Aussie slang for male appendage…
[name]River[/name] is a nice name but I think it is a bit corny to have a [name]Bay[/name] and a [name]River[/name]…

coolcat33- Im really loving [name]Tilly[/name] and [name]Cleo[/name]! We did have a dog called [name]Cleo[/name] when we were growing up but she is long gone… Also like [name]Aspen[/name], though my cousin has little boy with this name… Not so keen on [name]Bryony[/name] or [name]Laurel[/name]

So… I guess maybe what I’m after is some non-nature (or only very subtly nature) suggestions…?

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Cleo[/name] are great together! Of your originals, I love [name]Aster[/name], but youre right about “Rabbit”

[name]June[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Maren[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Lux[/name]
[name]Scout[/name]
[name]Neve[/name]
[name]Rory[/name]
[name]Reese[/name]
[name]Zara[/name]
[name]Thea[/name]

You’ve got a nice list, but most of them have issues for you two, so I won’t comment.

I think [name]Seren[/name] and [name]Calla[/name] are beautiful names that sound lovely with [name]Bay[/name]. I also like [name]Noa[/name] and [name]Willow[/name] (I kind of like the tree theme!).

Have you thought about [name]Ima[/name] or Nami?

I like [name]Arlo[/name] for both genders. It’s more used for boys but it’s a subtle nature name with no gender in its meaning

Based on your list I’ll suggest
[name]Arden[/name]
[name]Zola[/name]
[name]Cambria[/name]
Sabrin “sah-[name]BRYN[/name]”
[name]Alba[/name]

[name]Ever[/name] - I said it out loud and I totally heard [name]Eve[/name] Rabbit with your last name. I would probably stay away from -r names (ie [name]Aster[/name]). Sad because I really like [name]Ever[/name] with [name]Bay[/name].

[name]Thora[/name]- [name]Thora[/name] has the same -a ending issues (see [name]Fia[/name] and [name]Noa[/name]) but I really like [name]Thora[/name]. Have you considered [name]Thea[/name] as an alternative? (though maybe that turns into The [name]Abbot[/name]?).

[name]Fia[/name] and [name]Noa[/name]- This names are so short and the -a runs into Abbet making it sound a bit like Fi Abbet and No Abbet when you don’t put in the extra effort to separate the names.

[name]Seren[/name] - I love that this sounds almost like [name]Serenity[/name] but not. I think this would be a great fit with [name]Bay[/name].

[name]Arlie[/name]- I think it sounds too much like [name]Arlo[/name] (which I love) and yes a bit made up.

[name]Posy[/name] - I love [name]Posey[/name] (with the extra e) or [name]Poesy[/name] - the first as a floral name the second as a nod to poetry. They have been some of my favorite nn options for years. But your husband has a point that they have similarity to “poser” and if he’s not into it I would drop it you have some other much stronger contenders on your list. Same advice for [name]Cameo[/name].

[name]Zanna[/name] - This is one of my least favorite on your list. It sounds awkward and clumsy in my accent.

[name]Calla[/name] & [name]Isla[/name] - I love both so much and while I do think that for both the -a ending is problematic (see above) I think the extra letter or two length in the name at least make it sound like there is a name. [name]Calla[/name] is one of my favorite choices on your list and I think that [name]Calla[/name] and [name]Bay[/name] would be gorgeous together. ([name]Isla[/name] and [name]Bay[/name] are a little too water themed for me but it would be an interesting theme and a nice combo as well -> I’d also stay away from [name]Isla[/name] if you know a few. You’ve got really unique name considerations - choose something special to your child.)

[name]Shalom[/name] - I love the intent behind the name but I feel like you are almost trying too hard to capture that peaceful feeling you love from [name]Bay[/name].

[name]Willow[/name] - If you don’t want the tree theme then yes I’d stay away. I like [name]Willa[/name] as well (though once again -a ending).

Have you considered:[name]Lyric[/name], [name]Iris[/name], [name]Erie[/name], [name]Oriel[/name], and [name]Wren[/name]? They are all a little spunkier than [name]Bay[/name] but you don’t necessarily want your kids to have the same temperament.

I really like [name]Arlie[/name], but I would spell it [name]Arley[/name], which I think makes it more complete, it has ties to nature as it’s meaning is ‘from the rabbit meadow’ which is adorable, I think it goes really well with [name]Bay[/name] too. [name]Both[/name] [name]Bay[/name] and [name]Arley[/name] are on my list too.
Some names I would suggest:
[name]Tove[/name]
[name]Ebba[/name]
[name]Mercy[/name]
[name]Wren[/name]
[name]Verve[/name]
[name]Sage[/name]
[name]Fifer[/name]

I like [name]Fia[/name] best from your list!

others -

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Lolly[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Saige[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Ada[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Coco[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Mercy[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Avril[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Lola[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Dagny[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Fable[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Signy[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Ona[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Polly[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Hollis[/name]

[name]Bay[/name] and [name]Ceil[/name]

Wow thanks so much for all the considered replies and thoughtful suggestions!

I am now feeling much more positive about a few of the names already on our list, mostly:
[name]Seren[/name] (decided it IS pretty just not frilly- rather like [name]Bay[/name])
[name]Fia[/name] (with our Australian long vowels it doesn’t run into our surname as much as it might with other accents)
[name]Calla[/name] (happy to see such a positive response to this name)

Lineska- i love the suggestion of [name]Lux[/name]. this is a brand of soap here but I do really love the look and feel of this name

Ottile- thanks for the positive vibes for [name]Seren[/name] & [name]Calla[/name]! I do like the short simplicity of [name]Ima[/name] but feel its a potential minefield with the “I’m a…” Not familiar with Nami, how would that be pronounced?

Nat108- yes [name]Arlo[/name] is hot contender if we have boy… But hadn’t considered for a girl… interesting idea… Hmmmm… I do like the sound of Sabrin but imagine it would get lots of incorrect pronunciation… got me thinking about [name]Sabine[/name] though

Lexiem- I appreciate your honesty… I wish I could make myself love [name]Thora[/name]. I just hear [name]Dora[/name] with a lisp. Thanks for your kind words on [name]Seren[/name] & [name]Calla[/name]. I’m actually quite liking your suggestion of [name]Iris[/name]… still not sure if this is a bit too “old lady” but I do love the flower so will sit on it for a bit and see how it grows on me… [name]Eire[/name] is another interesting suggestion… I like the look of it but not sure about the eerie sound? I think I must be quite partial to vowel heavy names!

Littleredone- Yes perhaps the [name]Arley[/name] spelling is better… I wasn’t too sure the name really did go well with [name]Bay[/name] so pleased to hear you think it does… still a bit hesitant as there is something a tad “trendy” about it? I quite like suggestions of [name]Tove[/name] and [name]Fifer[/name], though prefer these as boys names. I do like [name]Sage[/name] but feel that together with [name]Bay[/name] sounds very herbal!

Momof374- [name]Love[/name] [name]Fable[/name] but would never get it past the Husband. Quite drawn to [name]Coco[/name] but that’s another one he’d veto! Also love love love [name]Polly[/name] but feel that is quite a different style to [name]Bay[/name]… I know many people don’t let that put them off but I like the names to ‘fit’ [name]Do[/name] like [name]Lola[/name] but we have close friends with a little grl named this. Not so keen on [name]Lolly[/name], [name]Dagny[/name] or [name]Avril[/name].

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply, I really appreciate all the help!

@slave bracelets: Has anyone suggested [name]Thea[/name], instead of [name]Thora[/name] for you? [name]Bay[/name] and [name]Thea[/name] go very nicely together. From your list, I also love [name]Seren[/name] and [name]Calla[/name]. Good luck!

[name]Thora[/name] - While this doesn’t sound the best with [name]Bay[/name], it would be nice to honor his gma. Maybe a middle name?

My top 3 from your list:
[name]Fia[/name] - This is wonderful with [name]Bay[/name]. I don’t think the rhyming thing is a huge problem. We have a [name]Jason[/name], [name]Mason[/name], and [name]Grayson[/name] (all cousins) in my family and no one even mentions it.
[name]Seren[/name] - I think this is pretty. I think of it the same way you described [name]Bay[/name] - “short but sweet, calm but strong”
[name]Calla[/name] - Pretty name. It’s a bit more feminine than [name]Bay[/name] but still nice.

Suggestions:
Lena
Neve
Tess
Junia
Lila
Lillia
Aria
Noma
Ellery
Tatum
Maren
Brynn
Carys or Karis

I suggest:
[name]Bay[/name] & [name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Bay[/name] & [name]Cassie[/name]
[name]Bay[/name] & [name]Rio[/name]
[name]Bay[/name] & [name]Ione[/name]
[name]Bay[/name] & [name]Una[/name]

Oh thats hard because I lots of the names I had in mind ended in and -a or -er.

I love [name]Thora[/name]!!!

[name]Love[/name] [name]Bay[/name] & Luxe together.

My first thought was that [name]Bay[/name] and [name]Laurel[/name] would be lovely together - and I see someone else already mentioned it!

I don’t know if you would find it too “Irish” but I think Sorca would make a lovely match with [name]Bay[/name] and go along with your last name.

[name]How[/name] about [name]Briar[/name]? It goes nicely with [name]Bay[/name].

Thanks for all the input and suggestions!

[name]Thea[/name] has been mentioned a couple of times but I still prefer [name]Fia[/name] I think.

I also love [name]Briar[/name] and suggested it to husband early on and got a firm NO. His taste is more conservative than mine. He’s not a fan of [name]Lux[/name] either but not a definite no…

I quite like [name]Laurel[/name], not sure if it is love though. I have quite a negative association with the name [name]Laura[/name] perhaps that is what’s putting me off. Have run it past husband who quite likes it too so will add to list and see if it grows on me.

Sorca is a great name, but yes feel it is a bit too Irish got us as we don’t have any Irish heritage… I also love [name]Orla[/name] but hesitate for same reason…

Am also going to add [name]Lena[/name]/[name]Lenna[/name] to the list!

I do like [name]Cassie[/name] as a nickname for [name]Cassia[/name]
