A Sibling for Reid

[name]Hi[/name] Berries,
We’re expecting our 2nd child in [name]June[/name]. We have a 15 month old son named [name]Reid[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Rafferty[/name]. We’re having trouble coming up with names we love (especially for girls!) and would love suggestions.”

We are quintessential New Englanders and love preppy, upscale sounding names. We want something unusual but recognizable, modern but not trendy, distinguished but not overly pretentious. We feel that we reached that with [name]Reid[/name]'s name and hope to do the same with number 2.”
Thank you!

Thanks Berries! Below is our list of favorites for boys and girls. I’d love your opinions on the names, which ones you think go well with [name]Reid[/name], and which ones we should take of the list.”

As you can see, our girls style differs from our boys style. We like surname names on boys, but hate unisex names on girls. We like vintage girls names, as you can see.

Which are your favorites with [name]Reid[/name]? We’re also open to more suggestions.”

Thanks!”

I like [name]Grant[/name], [name]Miles[/name]/[name]Milo[/name], [name]Colin[/name], [name]Beckett[/name], [name]Quentin[/name], [name]Jude[/name] and [name]Porter[/name] for [name]Reid[/name]'s brother and [name]Jane[/name], [name]Zara[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Alice[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] for [name]Reid[/name]'s sister. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with your girls list. Most parents who name their son [name]Reid[/name] also like surname or unisex names for their daughters too. OK, this is more my style too so here are some other options for girls. I’m going to stick with shorter names that would look and sound good with [name]Reid[/name]. Good luck!

Here are some thoughts! [name]Hope[/name] they help! With the ones I don’t think fit…bear in mind that if I met them as siblings, I’d probably get over it quickly!

Favorites from your boys: [name]Colin[/name], [name]Grant[/name], [name]Miles[/name], [name]Quentin[/name]
Favorites from your girls: [name]Alice[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], and possibly [name]Jane[/name] (see below).

All best : D.

[name]Anderson[/name] - Too [name]Anderson[/name] [name]Cooper[/name] and too surname-y to me. [name]Reid[/name] is a surname, I know, but it has more history as a given name, to me.
[name]Asher[/name] - A Biblical to me, so to me, never truly trendy, but it does feel much more of-the-moment than [name]Reid[/name], and also, it’s one of very few Biblical names you seem to like for boys, so that gives me pause.
[name]Beckett[/name] - This is a nice name but very tied to the playwright, the word bucket, the nn [name]Becky[/name], etc. [name]Just[/name] feels less grounded than [name]Reid[/name].
[name]Colin[/name] - A surprising first-name-y play to the Irishness of [name]Reid[/name] and [name]Rafferty[/name]! [name]LOVE[/name].
[name]Conner[/name] - I like it OK but see it and think “con” and [name]Connie[/name].
[name]Cooper[/name] - Does feel kind of trendy, and also change that c to a p. I think it’s an unfortunate rhyme.
[name]Grant[/name] - Nice! To me, this is like [name]Reid[/name], surname-y but grounded as a first name.
[name]Grey[/name] - trendier as a first name, but not as much as [name]Greyson[/name]. I like it a lot, but do think it’s a little “drab” in association. [name]Graham[/name] nn [name]Gray[/name]?
[name]Harrison[/name] - Too [name]Harrison[/name] [name]Ford[/name] and too classically surname-y for me. Also don’t love potential nn [name]Harry[/name]. Would be OK.
[name]Holden[/name] - [name]Way[/name] more literary with [name]Reid[/name]. Kind of humorous, like the sons’ names are telling you to go read Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name]. I just also don’t find that character very appealing. [name]Alden[/name] is all right.
[name]Hunter[/name] - Past its prime for me. Also kind of violent.
[name]Jonah[/name] - and the whale? I love it in a family where religious names are the taste, but feels odd next to [name]Reid[/name].
[name]Jude[/name] - I love this name, but it’s a lot of one-syllable, ends in d with [name]Reid[/name] if you care.
[name]Miles[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]. Another first name that’s plausible as a surname. Also has some faintly Gaelic feeling, it’s more popular in those parts of the Anglosphere than here. Definitely feels preppy to me. [name]Love[/name] that it’s sort of a syllable-and-a-half, so you stick with short, but mix it up a bit.
[name]Milo[/name] - like it, but prefer it as a nn to [name]Miles[/name]
[name]Miller[/name] - I think of the beer, and I hear the girls’ name [name]Milla[/name].
[name]Parker[/name] - [name]Parker[/name] [name]Posey[/name]? [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Jessica[/name] [name]Parker[/name]? It’s OK but feels a little past its prime, and is associated with female celebrities enough that it feels weak next to [name]Reid[/name].
[name]Porter[/name] - I like this in theory, but it’s a very working class job, and that gives me pause, as does the fact that port’s an alcohol.
[name]Quentin[/name] - Feels very different from the others, but I think it’s a great name that works with [name]Reid[/name]! Definitely feels preppy to me.
[name]Spencer[/name] - feels a little bookish to me more than preppy. It’s OK.
[name]Walker[/name] - I like the sound of it, but it’s very [name]Texas[/name] [name]Ranger[/name] or [name]George[/name] H.W. [name]Bush[/name]. I mean, if you like those two associations, then it’s an OK choice, but I like some of the others better. [name]Walker[/name] [name]Texas[/name] [name]Ranger[/name] is hardly preppy.

[name]Alice[/name] - different from [name]Reid[/name], but in a good, balancing way. Earthier than [name]Reid[/name], but nicely so.
[name]Cecily[/name] - different from [name]Reid[/name], more elegant, but it works. They’re both lovely names.
[name]Daphne[/name] - I can’t put my finger on why, but I feel like it works.
[name]Felicity[/name] - I like this, but it sort of feels like two word names, and this is a lot more name. OK, not a fave.
[name]Frances[/name] - I like this name, it’s OK with [name]Reid[/name], but it kind of sounds like [name]Reid[/name] and [name]Francis[/name]. With [name]Reid[/name], I think you want something a little more clearly feminine. Spelling [name]Frances[/name] is, but the sound isn’t always. Especially if she gets nn’d [name]Frank[/name] or [name]Frankie[/name].
[name]Georgiana[/name] - I like this name pretty well, but it’s a mouthful next to [name]Reid[/name]. [name]Georgia[/name] would be better a bit, although then it’s kind of two word names.
[name]Hazel[/name] - to me, this is too different. [name]Hazel[/name] is waaaaay more down to earth than [name]Reid[/name]. [name]Alice[/name] to a stronger degree. Also, it’s two plant words to my ears.
[name]Helena[/name] - I love this name, but she’s quite overly-elegant next to [name]Reid[/name]. The anti-[name]Hazel[/name]. [name]Cecily[/name] to a stronger degree. Kind of like with [name]Georgiana[/name].
[name]Jane[/name] - Simultaneously earthy and elegant, a perfect fit with [name]Reid[/name]. The only thing to give me pause is if you’d feel you’d be in a rut with one syllable names if you’re planning future children? If you’re not, or you’re convinced that won’t be a problem, then a great option.
[name]Juliet[/name] - mmm, a beautiful name, a little too literary next to [name]Reid[/name]. It’s OK though.
[name]Louisa[/name] - like [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Reid[/name], elegant and spunky at once. I like that there is the shared ee without it being overwhelming. A great choice.
[name]Lydia[/name] - Similar comments to [name]Louisa[/name]. Great!
[name]Phoebe[/name] - I like this name, but it’s a lot of ee with [name]Reid[/name]. [name]Louisa[/name] up by a step. I’d prefer [name]Daphne[/name] of the two super-Greek names here.
[name]Violet[/name] - I like it pretty well. Two plant words again, but a better fit than [name]Hazel[/name].
[name]Willa[/name] - I feel similarly with this name as I do with [name]Hazel[/name].
[name]Zara[/name] - A great name, but very space-age princess next to [name]Reid[/name], I think.

I was just about to suggest [name]Grant[/name] when I saw it on your list. If I could name two boys each with one syllable fns they would be [name]Reid[/name] and [name]Grant[/name]. I just love those two together. They are perfectly grounded, handsome, and sophisticated imo. Is [name]Rafferty[/name] a second mn or a ln? It my be nice to repeat the pattern, something like [name]Grant[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Garrison[/name]. I like the 1-2-3 pattern and repeated Gs. If [name]Rafferty[/name] is your ln then I would stick to either a 2-1-3 or 1-2-3 pattern. Your girls list is lovely, really any would be fabulous.

I love the name [name]Reid[/name]! I think [name]Grant[/name] is a perfect match for his brother! Really, it just compliments and flows together so well. I aslo like [name]Miles[/name], [name]Colin[/name], and [name]Jude[/name]. I like [name]Quinn[/name] better then [name]Quentin[/name].

All your girls names are gorgeous!

First of all, thank you for all of the responses! Hearing other people’s opinions really helped to enforce what we were already thinking. In fact, most of the names you listed as your favorites with [name]Reid[/name] are our favorites and your feedback helped us narrow down our list substantially.”

Our much shorter boys list:
[name]Colin[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]

Girls list isn’t quite as short;
[name]Alice[/name]”
[name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]

@mischa- ”how funny! I was actually surprised by the original suggestions. I wasn’t expecting all of those unisex names. Surname names are very popular around here for boys, but the majority of little girls I meet seem to have vintage/classic names.”

@Leah_9 - [name]Rafferty[/name] is a second middle name and our last name is two syllables. Ideally, we’d love to continue the alliteration and syllable count with future children, but that may be a little hard.”

Our much shorter boys list:
[name]Colin[/name]- I prefer the spelling [name]Collin[/name]. [name]Colin[/name] looks like it should be prn like [name]Colon[/name].
[name]Grant[/name]- Still my favorite, so smart and handsome.
[name]Miles[/name]- [name]Reid[/name], [name]Grant[/name], and [name]Miles[/name] would be a dashing set of boys.
[name]Jude[/name]- Generally I would love [name]Jude[/name], but [name]Reid[/name] and [name]Jude[/name] dont have the best flow,
they are a little similar with the one syllable and both ending in -d.

For girls I really like [name]Hazel[/name], its pretty but not showy, feminine but not frilly and fits with the sophisticated style of [name]Reid[/name]. [name]Alice[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], and [name]Willa[/name] would be my other picks.

I think the syllable pattern you have going for the boys is perfect btw. 1-2-3-2 or 2-1-3-2 is ideal I think. Although you could have something longer like [name]Cecily[/name] sound nice too…Something like [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] or [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Jane[/name] [name]Alice[/name].

I like the name [name]Reid[/name]! You said you want “modern but not trendy, and that you want preppy”…the problem I see with your girls list is that mostly none of them feel modern nor do they feel “preppy”, most of your girl names are vintage/old lady names. The girls names dont fit with [name]Reid[/name] style wise if your going after that modern /preppy feel. I personally would find a sibling set of [name]Reid[/name] and one of your vintage girls names to be awkward… It would be the same as if you were choosing a unisex girl name and a vintage boy name…example…[name]Avery[/name] (girl) and [name]Theodore[/name]…you see what I mean? But if you dont like anything but vintage/old lady names for girls then you dont have a choice, you will just need to live with your kids names having different styles/impressions…which isnt that bad of a thing. Good luck!

BTW the last couple names from your list could pass as not being old lady/grandma names…I still wouldnt consider them to be modern or preppy but I do think they would look okay next to [name]Reid[/name].

leah I agree [name]Grant[/name], [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Reid[/name] would be an outstanding sibset.

[name]Colin[/name] is blah imo, and with [name]Jude[/name] I feel like saying , [name]Hi[/name] [name]Jude[/name] Dude! I think I like [name]Jude[/name] better in the mn spot.

Now I think [name]Hazel[/name] shines with [name]Reid[/name]! I would never have thought of it but now I can see how well it goes, but it is a different style I would have suggested [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Reid[/name] or [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Reid[/name].

[name]Do[/name] you have any middles picked out, if not here are a few ideas.

[name]Grant[/name] [name]Lachlan[/name] I just love the combo of these two names and the great flow and its timelessness.
[name]Miles[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] Probably my two favourite names and in combo beautiful
[name]Miles[/name] [name]Andrew[/name] Also very handsome
[name]Miles[/name] [name]Jamison[/name] I love the name [name]James[/name] but in combo with [name]Miles[/name] it needs to become [name]Jamison[/name] which is a beaut name.

rollo

[name]Jane[/name] [name]Alice[/name] [name]Cecily[/name] would have the same meter as [name]Reid[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Rafferty[/name]. [name]Cecily[/name] has the same consonance as [name]Rafferty[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] nearly rhymes with [name]Thomas[/name].

For a boy, [name]Grant[/name] Something [name]Gallagher[/name] would have a very similar feel. For the second name, something with the two syllables trochee, like [name]Albert[/name], [name]Howard[/name], [name]Beckett[/name], [name]Martin[/name], or [name]Colin[/name].

And I would remove “[name]Spencer[/name]” from any list of vague possibilities-- there’s a character on ‘Criminal Minds’ named [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Reid[/name].

I think the name [name]Greer[/name] (or [name]Grier[/name]) for a boy would go very well with [name]Reid[/name]. I think that it fits a baby well, as well as is being a respectable name for a man.

Girl names are a little harder, but I think [name]Harper[/name] would go pretty well with [name]Reid[/name] and it’s sophisticated.
