A sister for Adelaide Iria

Hello! I just found out that we’re having a girl for baby #2–after picking the perfect boys’ name!

So far, my top choice is [name_f]Verity[/name_f], followed by [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]. I want something around 3 syllables, vintage-y, and preferably with a virtuous meaning (though I know [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] doesn’t fit that criterion), and not in the top 300.

Possible middle name: [name_f]Else[/name_f] (my grandmother’s middle name, and her mother’s and sister’s first names).

What do you all think?
Thank you!

I really like [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Else[/name_f]

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] also made me think of [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]. Though it doesn’t go with [name_f]Else[/name_f] very well. It means Happiness and isn’t very popular.

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] sound cute together

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Else[/name_f] is lovely!
Here are some other possible first name suggestions:
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] - Same classic, regal feel as [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and the meaning is “pure”. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] also lends itself to lots of nickname options from classics like [name_f]Cate[/name_f] and [name_f]Catie[/name_f] to more vintage-y ones like [name_f]Cat[/name_f], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] or [name_f]Trina[/name_f].
[name_f]Constance[/name_f] - Not as long as you were describing, but definitely has a vintage vibe and a virtuous meaning.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cora[/name_f] - Timeless and the nn [name_f]Cora[/name_f] means “maiden” which has virtuous implications.
[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name as a pairing with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]. Equally feminine with the addition of the “a” at the end. Lots of nickname options from [name_f]Nora[/name_f] to [name_f]Ella[/name_f].
[name_f]Sophronia[/name_f] - Means “sensible; prudent” and could have some cute nn options like [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Sonia[/name_f] or [name_f]Sia[/name_f]

I love else. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], and pru or prudie for short? Or:

[name_f]Mercy[/name_f]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f]
[name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] (teddy for nickname)
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]!

[name_f]Amity[/name_f] is similar in sound and style to [name_f]Verity[/name_f], and is another ‘virtue’ name without being on the nose like [name_f]Hope[/name_f] or [name_f]Faith[/name_f] or [name_f]Charity[/name_f] etc.

Some more suggestions:
[name_f]Virtue[/name_f] names (including some without 3 syllables):
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] (Only 1 syllable, but it feels more substantial and is longer than most 1 syllable names)
[name_f]Bonita[/name_f]
[name_f]Clemence[/name_f] (more rare than [name_f]Clementine[/name_f])
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Ferelith[/name_f] (means Sovereignty)
[name_f]Justine[/name_f]
[name_f]Patience[/name_f]
Remembrance
[name_f]Temperance[/name_f]

Other names with a similar flavour:
Dimity (not on Nameberry, but quite well used in Australia)

Oh [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] is gorgeous!

I love [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]! I also love the suggestion of [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and will suggest [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f].

Adelaide is a name that’s more stylized than most. For example, you could choose Adele, Audrey, or even Ada or Heidi as variations, which are all more plain. I added some names that aren’t 3 syllables, just for variety. They all have positive meanings.

Edit: I forgot to say that I think the softness of Cecily sounds wan next to Adelaide. Next to such a European-chic name as Adelaide, the English word name Verity comes across a bit strange. At first glance I can’t see the meaning. Amity is more familiar, but Amabel has just as nice a meaning and is pretty with Adelaide. Why not consider Iona from your signature? It’s beautiful. Suggestions of Felicity and Prudence are so nice.

Thank you all so much!! So, I’ve shown all your suggestions to DH and here are the ones we both like…

[name_f]Araminta[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliora[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
[name_f]Amabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
([name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is pretty, but couldn’t get DH to go for it)

and we still like [name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], though they may not sound perfect with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f].

DH really isn’t sold on mn [name_f]Else[/name_f], either, so stay tuned! Any other suggestions or thoughts on this list welcome!

I love [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]

Ill suggest a slight variation…
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Christina[/name_f] [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Amabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicia[/name_f]
[name_f]Serena[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]

Would you mind helpibg me with mine?

ideas for fn:
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] ([name_f]Etta[/name_f] and even better if you call [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f])
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (although becoming not very vintage-y)

Hello again! Thanks so much for your suggestions! Of the following names, which would you consider vintage?

[name_f]Araminta[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliora[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
[name_f]Amabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]

I know a name doesn’t have to be vintage to go well with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]…how important do you think it is?

From your list, I’d consider the following vintage: [name_f]Araminta[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], [name_f]Amabel[/name_f], [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f]. These are my favorites with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]-- favorites are [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Verity[/name_f]. I would not do another name starting with A. [name_f]Eliora[/name_f] and [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] don’t have the same classic sense as [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] seems more “cute-sy” to me. What about [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], or [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] instead?

Some other possibilities:

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and

[name_f]Belinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Bettina[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]/[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_u]Marion[/name_u]
[name_f]Marina[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Pamela[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f]
[name_f]Roxana[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Theresa[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]
[name_f]Viveca[/name_f]

Thank you for all of these names–I’ll have to share them with DH and see what he thinks! I know he likes [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], and I like the sound of it especially since that is where we live and baby #2 will be the first family member born here! But I don’t want to give both my kids place names!

Thanks again!

Hey again! [name_m]Just[/name_m] stumbled across a new name and thought I’d see what y’all thought of it: [name_f]Evelina[/name_f]. DH likes it and we think it sounds good with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] because it’s long and romantic and vintage. Obviously, it doesn’t go that well with [name_f]Else[/name_f]. Back to the family tree to see what else we can dig up! What do y’all think?

Thanks!

I like [name_f]Evelina[/name_f]. My mother-in-law’s name is [name_f]Eveline[/name_f], and it gets mispronounced as [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] a lot, but I think adding an “a” at the end would fix that. I’m a big fan of any names ending in -ine or -ina. Lots of good suggestions in the comments, although another vintage name I really like that I didn’t see mentioned is [name_f]Marilla[/name_f].

[name_f]Evelina[/name_f] is gorgeous! It also has an assortment of possible nn. [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], and I even have a friend who goes by [name_f]Evie[/name_f], pronounced with a hard e. Interested to see what possible family mn you came up w/!

Thank you all! We will keep looking for that family mn. Great to hear that peir don’t think it’s too frilly or that it sounds made up (even though it’s obviously not!).
