I’m new here, so first of all, hi I’m Katie. I have a 7-year-old daughter named Caroline (Caroline Louise, Louise after my mama) and I am finally expecting another baby in June. We don’t know the sex, but a boy will be John Gordon after my husband (baby will be called Johnny). We’re at loggerheads over what to name a girl. We both tend to like traditional names, but he leans a bit more toward trendy and I lean more toward, as he refers to it, “plain.”
Here is my list:
Mary Grace (double name)
Sarah Katherine (double name)
Anna
Grace
Elizabeth
Here are John’s favorites:
Emily (too popular for me)
Abigail (strongly dislike)
Olivia (just plain dislike)
Madeleine (too close to Caroline!)
Lucy
What do y’all think? Do you have any suggestions? favorites?
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you say [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]? And how do you say [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]? I say CARE-oh-line and MAD-eh-len, so I wouldn’t say they’re too close at all. I love [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], and your whole list with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]! I met a cute little girl a couple years ago named [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f]–she was just adorable! And I think [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is a great double barrel. And [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] are all great with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I’m generally not a huge [name_f]Anna[/name_f] fan, but I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] would be really adorable.
([name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] are adorable, too, for what it’s worth!)
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is one of my favourite names- classy and proper but down-to-earth at the same time, and with so many great namesakes- so I’d vote for that. I also love [name_f]Anna[/name_f], seemingly plain and normal but with a bewitching magic of her own underneath. I’m not fond of [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] are sweet names, with “midcentury Southern” charm (in a good way, not a dated way), but not that exciting to me.
I’m not fond of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a full name, though I like it as a nickname for [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is sweet but I agree it’s popular. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]? I like the playful, spunky [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and the [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] connection myself- what about [name_f]Olive[/name_f]? [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] pronounced mad-uh-len or mad-uh-lane isn’t too close to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] in my opinion.
I would have to say [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is my favourite. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] sound divine together to be honest.
I have been saying [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] with the -line ending but I guess that’s wrong isn’t it?
I never thought about nicknaming [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f].” Now that’s kind of my frontrunner. It also has me thinking about [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]” WDYT of that?
I love lots of the suggestions and will run them by my husband (who I already know doesn’t like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] is actually too close to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f])
As far as I know, technically, [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] should be mad-uh-len because it’s of [name_m]French[/name_m] origin and that’s the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation. In English both pronunciations are acceptable, it’s just personal preference. I say [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] as emm-uh-leen, not emm-uh-line, so don’t find it too close to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] are sweet, and I like how she’d have a longer name for official/formal occasions.
I have to admit that your husband’s style matches a bit more with my own. I think that [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] (I would maybe consider the [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] spelling to make pronunciation clearer?) go best with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] go particularly well with your other daughter’s name. I also really like [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] from your list. I think both go well with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I like that [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has so many nickname options, because it lets the name grow with the girl. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] lack a little something special for me (maybe just because I know so many older Sarahs and [name_f]Marys[/name_f]) and I don’t think [name_f]Grace[/name_f] goes particularly well with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. My suggestions would be: [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_u]Julianne[/name_u], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f].
I like all of the names except [name_f]Anna[/name_f] its too plain for my tastes and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is in the top 10 which makes it almost as popular as [name_f]Emily[/name_f].

[name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
Sorry to say, but I really like all the ones your husband gave! [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] isn’t so abstract that [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] or [name_f]Emily[/name_f] wouldn’t sound bad, I actually think the pairs sound great!
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]! Double names are pretty hip right now but the names are classic and elegant, so both you and the husband win! [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] make a pretty sibset. Congratulations on your new bundle!!
I like your husband’s suggestions too, but out of your list, my favourite is [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f] go well together. Here are some other names you might like:
[name_f]IMO[/name_f] I think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is a beautiful sib to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] would be a nice compromise. I also like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]?
