I am 37 1/2 weeks pregnant and we are still undecided on a name. I would like a name that flows well with [name]Wyatt[/name] and our last name [name]Jermaine[/name] (not the exact spelling but same pronunciation). So far the only names we can agree on are:
[name]Lauren[/name], I’m afraid it is gaining popularity
[name]Caralyn[/name], I like this spelling but am afraid people will pronounce it Car-[name]Ah[/name] and not Care-[name]Ah[/name]. If you saw this spelling how would you pronounce it? Would we be better off spelling it with a K?
We would love any suggestions. Names that I love but my husband doesn’t like are [name]Nora[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] and [name]Abigail[/name]. My husband liked [name]Zoe[/name] and [name]Avery[/name]. He likes modern and popular names and I tend to like the opposite. We would love to find a happy medium. [name]Wyatt[/name]'s middle names are French so we are open to French names. We have agreed on the middle name [name]Joy[/name].
Well, with an older brother named [name]Wyatt[/name] and an awesome last name like [name]Jermaine[/name], this baby girl of yours will be just fine.
[name]Lauren[/name]: [name]Lauren[/name] isn’t gaining popularity, she already has it. [name]Lauren[/name] has been in the top 25 since the 80s and is just starting to trend off now. I was born in the [name]Lauren[/name] era and I knew about 5 in high school. They all had to go by their last initials. [name]Even[/name] though [name]Lauren[/name] has a soft, feminine sound, I would advise against it because I think it will end up being a trend. A well-deserved trend, but a trend nonetheless. [name]Laura[/name], on the other hand, is a classic and never goes out of style. Although, actually,I just checked and it’s [name]WAY[/name] down in popularity for the first time in decades right now.
[name]Caralyn[/name]: The spelling I’m familiar with is [name]Carolyn[/name]. Most of the [name]Carolyn[/name]'s I know are in their 50s. [name]Caralyn[/name] does make it fresher. I would stay away from K. [name]Caralyn[/name] will be pronounced just fine. It’s not my favorite (I tend to like traditional names, as you seem to). I think I like [name]Cara[/name] better.
French names mixed with modern/vintage names:
[name]Genevieve[/name] (so pretty)
[name]Georgia[/name] (This name sounds vintage (for you) but is just becoming popular now (for him)).
[name]Willa[/name] (I like this because [name]Willa[/name] Cather was a Western writer so [name]Willa[/name] matches [name]Wyatt[/name]'s cowboy charm)
[name]Britta[/name]
[name]Ada[/name] (very trendy, but old)
[name]Lyla[/name] (fresher than [name]Lauren[/name]?)
Thanks so much for the input and suggestions. I like [name]Genevieve[/name], [name]Georgia[/name], [name]Willa[/name] and [name]Lyla[/name] but DH turned them all down.
[name]Lauren[/name] is pleasant but not rare. It’s nice and sweet but if popularity bothers you I might avoid it. It’s in a similar boat as a favourite of mine, [name]Emily[/name]… which has been so popular for so long you’ll hear it a lot on babies and on their mothers, too.
[name]Laurel[/name] might be an option? Natural, sweet, a bit more unexpected than [name]Lauren[/name] or [name]Laura[/name]?
I’m very fond of [name]Caroline[/name] - which admittedly is not exciting or astoundingly of-the-moment, but is very classic - but I’m afraid I find most -lyn names rather trendy and used-and-abused. [name]Caralyn[/name] is nicer than some but I’d be tempted to, in that case, saw [name]Cara[/name] free of the -lyn to keep it from getting mixed in with the [name]Ashlyn[/name]/[name]Madelyn[/name]/[name]Kaitlyn[/name]/[name]Gracelyn[/name]/Amberlyn/Jennalyn/[name]Kaelyn[/name]/Brooklyns of the moment.
Other ideas:
[name]Giselle[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Coralie[/name], [name]Coraline[/name], [name]Carolina[/name]
[name]Georgiana[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] - Classic, so not surprising/fresh sounding, but never out either. The C spelling is the French option, I believe.
[name]Annabel[/name], [name]Mirabel[/name], Rosabel - a -bel/-belle name to appease your DH’s love of the popular, that is more unexpected than [name]Isabella[/name].
[name]Bryony[/name], [name]Jessamy[/name], [name]Naomi[/name]/[name]Noemie[/name], [name]Ione[/name] - Unexpected -ee ending names that might appeal to your DH, who seems to love them, but which have historic/romatic roots.
I love [name]Wyatt[/name]! I’m sure you’ll both eventually agree on the perfect name for your little girl
[name]Lauren[/name]: My initial impression of [name]Lauren[/name] is slightly dated, and I would assume an 80s/90s baby upon hearing it. I’m an early 90s baby myself and I could probably name 10 [name]Laurens[/name] my age that I grew up with/know now on the spot. I think it is a lovely name that would still work in 2013, but she would definitely know more of her friends’ moms named [name]Lauren[/name] than her own friends themselves. Not always a bad thing, though It doesn’t really work as a sibset with [name]Wyatt[/name] to me, however; [name]Wyatt[/name] has much more of a modern feel.
[name]Caralyn[/name]: When I first read this one, I didn’t even think of it as the same name as the more dated [name]Carolyn[/name] spelling, so [name]Caralyn[/name] definitely updates it and gives the name a fresher feel. I think it is very pretty and would personally choose it over [name]Lauren[/name]. [name]Wyatt[/name] and [name]Caralyn[/name] are both nice, soft-sounding names and [name]Caralyn[/name] [name]Joy[/name] is lovely. I agree with the above post, though, that it could very easily get lost in the pile of other trendy -lyn names right now and lose its charm a little.
A few other ideas I thought of for you:
[name]Stella[/name] (rising on the popularity charts, so that might appeal to your DH, but also vintage-y for you)
[name]Carys[/name] (similar to [name]Caralyn[/name], but a little more distinguished)
[name]Evelyn[/name] (same explanation as [name]Stella[/name], but also the -lyn ending you both seem to like; [name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Joy[/name] is beauuuutiful)
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
Neither [name]Caralyn[/name] nor [name]Lauren[/name] fit well with [name]Wyatt[/name] at all. Maybe [name]Cara[/name]? Or [name]Caroline[/name]? Or [name]Lara[/name]? [name]Lorelei[/name]? I think [name]Zoe[/name] is great fit.
Other ideas:
[name]Chloe[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Adeline[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Lena[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Claire[/name] or [name]Clara[/name]
[name]Molly[/name]
[name]Leah[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Kenna[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name] (I really love this with [name]Wyatt[/name] and middle name [name]Joy[/name]!)
[name]Madelyn[/name]
Well, I think [name]Lauren[/name] is lovely but it is definitely common if not popular. As for [name]Caralyn[/name], I would have pronounced it Car-ah-lyn and not Care-ah-lyn. Sorry.
I think [name]Lauren[/name] and [name]Wyatt[/name] sounds very nice together!
[name]Lauren[/name]- I feel like this name is a bit too dated and popular for my taste
[name]Caralyn[/name]- I pronounce it Care-[name]Ah[/name]. I wouldn’t use a K, I feel like K’s cheapen a name. I don’t know if this will help, but what about [name]Carolyn[/name]?
I love your name choices! What a bummer that your hubby won’t cooperate
[name]Happy[/name] medium ideas-
[name]Gemma[/name]
Annaleise
[name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name] “[name]Ada[/name]”
[name]Rosie[/name]
French middle names-
[name]Juliette[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Oceane[/name]
[name]Esme[/name]
I think that [name]Caralyn[/name] would be pronounced the way that you want it said. I would use the C as opposed to the K. [name]Caralyn[/name] [name]Joy[/name] is a beautiful name and I think it works well with big brother [name]Wyatt[/name]. What about [name]Adeline[/name] [name]Joy[/name]?
I had to stop and think about how to pronounce [name]Caralyn[/name]. The spelling leaves it very ambiguous and I’m drawn to say CAR-ah-lin in order to make sense of why there is an ‘a’ and not an ‘o’ in the middle. I would stick to the [name]Carolyn[/name] spelling or, even better, [name]Caroline[/name] (the French roots of this spelling may also be an added bonus for you).
[name]Lauren[/name] seems very dated to me, but still has some charm via [name]Lauren[/name] Bacall. I really like the suggestion of [name]Laurel[/name]!!
