As I’m sure most people know, Aaliyah is my ultimate #1 for a little girl. S/O and I both surprisingly agree on this one, so I’m quite happy with that too! However, there’s a couple of different pronunciations for the name, and I want to know what one is most common so I know how often I’ll have to correct it, if at all!

How Do You Say Aaliyah?
  • Ah-lee-yah (ah as in the word “fall”)
  • Uh-lee-yah

Which one do you use? I’d say Aaliyah’s A closer to American “fall”

I know the singer pronounced her name like aw-lee-uh, but would say uh-LEE-uh first because that’s how I learned to pronounce it years ago.

For me the pronunciation is like ah-lee-yah (“a Leah”) but that’s not how I pronounce fall soo :sweat_smile:

[name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f] is such a beautiful name! It’s popular in Australia so I’ve met a few (+ various spellings!)
I knew 2 'Ah-lee-yah’s, and 3 ‘Uh-lee-yahs’, so I tend to swap between the two.

EDIT: I voted ‘Uh-lee-yah’ though, simply because thats what I tend to hear the most?

Closer to Uh-lee-yah but honestly they sound virtually interchangeable to me. I’m a teacher and one of my favorite students ever was an Aaliyah! Beautiful name.

I say Ah-lee-yah but I knew an [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f] who pronounced it Uh-haw-lee-uh with the second syllable pronounced like in hall.

Honestly, and as I’m not in the US/Canada it really doesn’t matter but [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f] always read as uh-lye-uh to me :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
But disregarding the incorrectly pronounced middle syllable, based on my pronunciation I would probably say uh-lee-uh.

“Eye-lay-uh” is one I think I’ve heard before, but I realize the most popular pronunciation is “Uh-lee-yah.”
