I’e had the combo [name_m]Abner[/name_m] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] on the top of my GP List for years now. [name_m]Abner[/name_m] just hadn’t felt ready for a comeback, but is his day coming? I don’t anticipate him being a chart-topper again, but I don’t think the day he becomes recognizable once more is too far off. Plus, it lends itself to the cute nickname “[name_m]Abe[/name_m]” without using [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] or [name_m]Abram[/name_m] as the long form.
It finally feels safe to use [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] again, since the [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] Brothers have fallen off the map. I love that he is worn by Dr. [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] Salk, who developed the polio vaccine. Plus, he is in the Top 500, so he should be recognizable without appearing tired.
I’m not usually one to really care too awfully much about name meanings, but each of these names have meanings I adore, with [name_m]Abner[/name_m] being “father of light” and [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] being “dove.” I also love that [name_m]Abner[/name_m] is Hebrew and [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] is the Greek form of the Hebrew, [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], as the Old Testament was penned in Hebrew and the [name_m]New[/name_m] in Greek. It’s a very subtle connection, but one I personally find meaningful.
So, what are your thoughts? Is [name_m]Abner[/name_m] ready to be used? [name_m]How[/name_m] does [name_m]Abner[/name_m] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] feel to you?
I love them both! I like OT names that have a vintage feel as well. & [name_m]Abner[/name_m] & [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] go together beautifully. [name_m]Abe[/name_m] & [name_m]Joe[/name_m] are awesome nn.
I think it’s definitely ready to be used. It’s sounds refreshing, honestly. [name_m]Abner[/name_m] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] is a handsome and both names have wonderful meanings.
I was just looking at the extended SSA list, and it went up from last year. It’s bubbling just under the Top 1000 (it was two places away from the name in the 1000th spot), and it could well make the jump back into the Top 1000 next year. Like you, I don’t think it’ll be a chart-topper, but I think it’s going to start looking a lot more recognizable and reasonable in the coming years. It aligns well with names like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]. And it was mentioned in like one or two episodes of Supernatural, lol, so that should make people notice it again. I love the name.
Oh yes, I think [name_m]Abner[/name_m]'s time is coming. Meeting an [name_m]Abner[/name_m] would help me to shake the simpleton/country bumpkin vibe that still (loosely) clings to the name. As someone else mentioned, [name_m]Abner[/name_m] is lurking just outside the top 1000 right now. With [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_m]Archer[/name_m] gaining popularity, [name_m]Abner[/name_m] does seem like a natural follower.
I definitely think so. I know a little [name_m]Abner[/name_m] (with a brother named [name_m]Boaz[/name_m]), and it suits him wonderfully. He is a kind, smart, funny and studious little guy.
I’m not a fan of it. I’m not sure where, but get a really ‘piggy’ feel off of it. After some googling, Hey [name_m]Arnold[/name_m] might be the cause of that.
[name_m]Abner[/name_m]'s not a name I’d personally go for, but I find it very usable in current years if boys are being named names such as [name_m]Otis[/name_m] or [name_m]Abel[/name_m]. [name_m]Abner[/name_m] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] has a very distinguished sound to it; as a combo, it’s handsome.
I love the name, but in its Hebrew version, [name_m]Avner[/name_m], with the nn [name_u]Avi[/name_u]. If I’d had a second son, his Hebrew name definitely would have been [name_m]Avner[/name_m].
As someone who watched the TV show “Bewitched”, I can’t help but have one association with the name [name_m]Abner[/name_m]. The nosy and irritating neighbour [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] Kravitz on the show would often yell out her husband’s name in a whiny, grating voice whenever she saw something fishy going on at [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] the witch’s house. Sadly, as a result of watching too much television, the name [name_m]Abner[/name_m] is like hearing nails on the chalkboard for me.
I love both [name_m]Abner[/name_m] and [name_m]Jonas[/name_m]! They sound smashing together. If my SO ever vetoed my choice of [name_u]Avery[/name_u] someday then I think I would push for [name_m]Abner[/name_m] as a runner up
