About to give up on boy names!

I literally have been thru every single boys name over and over again and can’t seem to find anything to excite me. Our top 5 are [name_m]Roman[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m].

[name_m]Roman[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this- but we have a cat named [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] who we call [name_f]Ro[/name_f]. [name_m]Will[/name_m] this drive me nuts? Also we love the name [name_u]Holland[/name_u] for a girl down the road. Using [name_m]Roman[/name_m] would ruin our chance to use [name_u]Holland[/name_u] [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] everything about it except that a. [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] may use it and that personally would bother me, and b. it’s a tiny touch too formal for us. We do love the nn [name_m]Bear[/name_m] (the meaning of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]). We settled on this- and I keep questioning.

[name_u]August[/name_u]- Was our top choice but I see the popularity rising too much. Breaks my heart- but I know it will grate on my nerves if I see it rising.

[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]- I looooove it- but last name is Kinney. [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] Kinney… a no go.

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]- This name should be everything to me. It’s got an adorable toddler nickname ([name_m]Huey[/name_m]- until he’s old enough to be humiliated by it), it’s handsome, its understated and classic… it really is everything. But it feels incomplete to me at times.

I guess I just need opinions on which one- or some new suggestions for replacements. I am pretty much immersed in internet name forums, groups, etc. when I’m waiting for things to download and load during work hours- so I feel silly even asking- but you guys are the only group I trust and maybe I just need a fresh approach.

If it helps to know- our top girls names are [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] (our #1 chosen one), [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Elke[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_u]Holland[/name_u].

Sons full name will likely be [name_m]Charles[/name_m] _______ [name_m]Ciaran[/name_m] Kinney or [name_m]Charles[/name_m] _______ [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] Kinney… or perhaps some other Irish name depending on what we choose. We’re a two middle name family where the men go by their first middle names. [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] is the dad’s name.

DD would be [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] Kinney- most likely.

Help!!!

Personally, I would probably go with [name_m]Roman[/name_m]. It fits well with the other parts of his name (better with [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] than Cieran) but I can definitely see why it might not be ideal for you. My second pick would be [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], you seem to really love it and even though it doesn’t have quite as smooth a flow to it it does go nicely with both middle name options.

I vote [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]! Or alternatively [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. It’s a great name, and its shortness doesn’t really matter in a long double-middle full name.

[name_m]Roman[/name_m] isn’t my style, it’s like naming your kid [name_m]German[/name_m], or American, just seems odd to me. And [name_u]August[/name_u] is a month, I don’t really understand the appeal of being named that.

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is lovely and doesn’t feel too formal to me at all, more understated and bookish. It’s a far cry from say, [name_m]Percival[/name_m] or [name_m]Maximillian[/name_m]. But I agree it would irk me if someone super famous used that name for their baby born in mine’s year.

I love [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] too, but the double n with Kinney does look funny. Maybe [name_m]Quinton[/name_m]/[name_m]Quentin[/name_m], nn [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]?

Unless you bringing home a baby before Princess Kate does, I would just wait and see what she picks. I don’t think there is long to wait, and then you could just go with Arthur. Since you have a cute and very informal nickname picked out, I don’t think the formality of the name is a concern.

I agree with the poster above that if you feel like Hugh is incomplete, you could go with Hugo. You can still call him Huey.

My automatic nickname for Roman would be Ro, so yeah, that would make me crazy if the cat and the kid were called the same thing. If you had a different nickname for him, I don’t think its a problem. But I agree that if you want a daughter named Holland, two place names are a little much in one family.

I like August and would use it regardless of popularity, I know it is rising in popularity, but I never hear it on little kids when we are out. Have you checked specifically for your state? I doubt he would be in a class with other little Augusts, but if the fact that its gaining in popularity is going to vex you, skip it,

I agree about Quinn. Incidentally, I do hear Quinn out absolutely everywhere on boys and girls. So maybe the rising popularity factor can help assuage your grief at it not working with your last name? In the case of Quinn, several of the Quinn’s we know have different formal names but go by Quinn as a full time nickname. So this might not be showing up in the statistics with the prevalence that it is showing up on the playground.

I really like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], it’s strong, classic but not overly used and just has a nice vibe to it.

I love [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].
I don’t think it’s too formal, but you could use nn [name_m]Art[/name_m] or [name_m]Artie[/name_m].

I also like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], and agree with PP about [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].
if you’re looking for something similar, I suggest [name_m]Henry[/name_m].

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I loved [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] for a long time- but the movie killed it for me. Positive association, sure, but I liked [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] when it was more surprising before the movie existed. That’s how we switched over to [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], and I think I like how distinguished it is.

As far as [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], it’s definitely still on the table- I just don’t know why I keep questioning it. Definitely won’t be ruling it out before the new prince is born- since that will affect how I feel about it (I know it wouldn’t for everyone- but it would for me) so I guess I’ll just wait it out a few more days. Should be any day now! As a huge [name_u]Howard[/name_u] Stern fan- don’t like [name_m]Art[/name_m] or [name_m]Artie[/name_m] (Think [name_m]Artie[/name_m] Lange) but still love [name_m]Bear[/name_m] as a nn.

I don’t know any baby [name_u]August[/name_u]'s yet myself… but I literally see it on every list- either [name_u]August[/name_u] or [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] every since that movie came out- on and off nameberry.

Anyone else have any other new suggestions? I’m wondering if I’m overly dwelling on these names? [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is a great name- but the part of CT I live in- every other little boy is [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], or [name_m]William[/name_m]. I like [name_m]Henrik[/name_m]- but probably not love.

[name_m]Ronan[/name_m] is so handsome! I’d also consider [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] and [name_m]Cormac[/name_m].

It seems we have very similar taste in names. I love [name_m]Roman[/name_m] and [name_u]August[/name_u].

I don’t associate [name_m]Roman[/name_m] with a location name really because [name_m]Roman[/name_m] has been a proper name for centuries, ie. the Romanovs. As you can see in my signature, my daughters name is [name_u]Holland[/name_u] and it never once crossed my mind that [name_m]Roman[/name_m] would be another location name to match with [name_u]Holland[/name_u].

I don’t like popular names either, but [name_u]August[/name_u] was my number one if we were having a boy. I know it is popular on this site, but I’ve never heard of many kids actually named it. It’s also a family name for me, so I guess, because of that, I was sort of ignoring it’s popular appeal to others, but I don’t think he’d be an [name_u]August[/name_u] X in school because of a ton of other Augusts.

Thank you guys for the help! I know a lot of people love [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]- and [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] for that matter- but they’ve never done it for me. I do see the appeal tho! Partner does not like [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] :frowning:

[name_u]Love[/name_u] your taste [name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u]!! I too am not seeing a ton of [name_u]August[/name_u]'s yet- and think it will likely stay out of the top 50- but even in the top 100 might bother me considering I know it will hit suddenly. I may watch it for a few years and use it for a future kid when I feel more confident in it. Too funny your DD is [name_u]Holland[/name_u]! I’m falling for that name more and more by the day! Can I ask feedback that you get on it?

I think I may set this list aside and rebuild a little. Then come back to this. Still TTCing (planners much???) so we have some time. Maybe two lists- the original and a newer one- might help. Crushing on [name_m]Alaric[/name_m]? Too nameberry-ish? (If there’s such a thing  )

Writing a fresh list is a great idea. I think I did that about 3 times with my son, then looked back at each list to see if any names had made it onto multiple lists, if I felt differently about any of the names on the original list etc. I get a bit fixated with making names lists though.

From your list [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is my favorite. Until [name_f]Kate[/name_f] has her baby I feel like there is no use in being deterred from the name simply for that reason. It is a very regal sounding name to me, but I kind of like that about it especially if it will be paired with [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. I think it goes well with either [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] or [name_m]Ciaran[/name_m] too. [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is certainly an adorable nickname too! I agree that [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] sounds a bit odd with you last name and it doesn’t go nearly as well with [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and the other middle names. [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is a fantastic name although I too am unsure about ever using it because it does sound unfinished yet [name_m]Hubert[/name_m] other longer forms don’t sound as appealing. [name_u]August[/name_u] is nice too but it is getting more popular and I’m afraid that will only continue. [name_m]Roman[/name_m] is a nice name too and I do like [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] but if you have doubts about it especially with your cat’s name and possible future daughter I feel like in your heart you know it would be a mistake. So from the bunch I think [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is your best bet!

My suggestion is to just take a break from stressing about it if you aren’t getting anywhere. For some reason I’ve lost interest in a lot of my favorite boy names and gave it a rest for a while. Now when I go back to some of those names I can’t ever imagine using them on a real baby or I lean more towards other names I never really considered. I whole-heartedly believe that when we do have a little one on the way that choosing a name will be very different and I’m hoping that when I see it I’ll just know! BTW I really like the name you chose for a girl. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps
