Absalom?

Opinions, thoughts and impressions on this name?
Any comments in compatibility with the names in my sig or suggestions of potential nicknames?

Thanks Berries!

I just read [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]! this summer. It’s a very dark, depressing book. I have a hard time dissociating the name from that, although I don’t think many people would make that association.

I’m unsure about [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]. Some days I like it and some days I don’t, I think it just has a weird sound to it.

Nicknames You could use…
[name_m]Abe[/name_m]
Som
Absa
Salom
[name_u]Sam[/name_u]
[name_u]Sammy[/name_u]
Abom

Sorry I can’t be much more helpful than that!

I love [name_m]Abe[/name_m], what a great suggestion! Thanks

I’m really growing to love [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]! It’s a really cool name. I’m not the hugest [name_m]Abe[/name_m] fan, so that doesn’t really appeal to me, but I thought of [name_m]Sol[/name_m] (for some reason, I’ve always said [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] more like [name_m]AB[/name_m]-sol-ahm, so [name_m]Sol[/name_m], even though it’s not spelled out directly, makes a lot of sense to me), and I love the suggestion of [name_u]Sam/name_u! I think [name_u]Sam[/name_u] makes [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] very wearable.

I’ve hesitated in the past with [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] because of the Biblical character–he’s a son of [name_m]David[/name_m] that tried to stage a coup to take over his kingdom, and ultimately died for it, chasing his father in the woods until his long hair got caught up in the branches and he couldn’t break free, and there he died. I’ve always found [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]'s story sad, because I’ve always wanted to really like him. He always seemed to have this zealous, stands-up-for-right heart, but then he always seemed to do something to sabotage himself. I also think of [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] from Cry, the [name_f]Beloved[/name_f] Country (which, omgoodness, I adore), and I like that it reminds me of a novel that so moved me, but it also makes me sad, thinking about the situation that molded [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] into who he was.

I definitely think [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] fits in with the names in your signature, but, if I were using it, I’d definitely make sure I was aware of the associations that come with it–the Biblical prince, Cry, the [name_f]Beloved[/name_f] Country, [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]!, etc. All very different, but I assume most people will think you got it from one of those three places, so it’d probably be good to be familiar with them before you actually use it.

For what it’s worth, though, I love the name, and would love to see it used! I think [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] is great.

I think [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] is fantastic, it’s on our long list for this baby. I like [name_m]Abe[/name_m] or [name_m]Sol[/name_m]/[name_u]Sal[/name_u] for nicknames. Like @ashthedreamer said, it’s not the best biblical story but I’m not religious so not worried about it. Also it’s very Old Testament, not many people that I’ve encountered have known or recognized that [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] is even a biblical figure!

It totally works with the names in your signature, and also please name my son for me. I love so many of your choices.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It is definitely a name I have a soft spot for…
