One of my character had absent parents, does anyone know how to make this happen in other ways than killing off the parents?
Here are some ideas:
-The character lives in an orphanage because the parents didn’t have enough to provide them with a stable home.
-The character’s parents are divorces, and they only live with one of them, who always goes to work and comes back drunk. They don’t pay any attention to the character.
The character could be at a residential school or a summer camp. They could live with other relatives because they do not get on with the parents or the parents are unable to look after them.
The character is studying abroad
character’s parent leaves for money (a bit cliché)
character’s parent has specific business elsewhere (leader of company, magic)
character hates said parents
character has specific business elsewhere
character is a hermit
parents are hermits
character is evil and plotting
parents are evil and plotting
specific event to make them hate each other
What is your genre?
Contemporary reasons:
-parents in jail
-parents work long hours (latch key kid)
-parents work high travel jobs (gone for a week at a time, multiple nights a week, etc)
-parents are around, but focused on their own thing (Dad always in the basement workshop)
-kid at a camp or boarding school
-parents believe in free range kids
-kid ran away
Consider age. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you need the characters to be young enough to live with parents, or could they be 18+?
Witness protection? The parents gave the baby up as they were in trouble and needed to adopt new identities?
Mother used a sperm donor ?
Parents have mental problems and are in a medical fraternity permanently
Parents are secret agents and don’t see their child. Child lives with different family member or is in a boarding school.
If the character is a child, and it’s a contemporary story, then I think the only way to have absent parents and no other guardians is that they work very long hours. Everything else would mean that she will me other adult was looking after them. So it depends of you just wants absent parents (so, they might live with foster parents, grandparents, adult siblings etc,) or you want no adults whatsoever.
