Accent on Esmé - pretty or unnecessary?

People won’t use it. I don’t even know how to get my keyboard to use it so I would skip the accent. Beautiful name though!

I add an accent in my middle name [name_f]Renee[/name_f] because I like it but I never expect others to add it! You don’t see a lot of accent marks these days. I wouldn’t insist it be on any official documents but I think accents are fun and pretty if you want to use it for fun.

Exactly this. If you are in the US, UK, etc, just don’t bother. It will only cause confusion.

I think it boils down to personal preference. I personally would not bother with accents because of people writing them wrong or just leaving them off. They are also difficult to type using a standard UK keyboard.

So from my end of the world, I’d expect to see the accent in order to know where the emphasis is. I understand in some countries this isn’t seen as a must and that the pronunciation is intuitive, but I think it’s up to you. Personally I’d keep the accent both for style and correct pronunciation

Agree with @enwmn, even in the UK there are names that use accents e.g Welsh and Irish and people don’t have any issues learning how to spell these.

I know this is an old discussion but just here to say that both thoughts are correct…the accent is correct & prettier, but ppl in the states will usually leave it off & not understand it.

We named our daughter the Latin word “to love” and since it was Latin, we kind of had a choice of how to pronounce it — we chose Amarae.

But we spelled it Amare like the Latin word, and added an accent on the end, as you would for Esmé, Beyoncé, etc.: Amaré.

We love it & find it common sense for anyone who knows how to read “do, ré, me”…she is now 10 and loves it herself. But. It DOES get mispronounced often & of course the accent is left off, as we’re in the states. Once ppl get used to it, it’s fine. But initially, it seems to give ppl major brain freeze.

Still, we all consider it prettier than the common sense Amarae we could have gone with…and I’d encourage the Esmé spelling all day everyday. :raised_hands:

I think leave off, I have a friend [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], who has an accent on the e in her name, but nobody ever uses it

[name_f]Pretty[/name_f] but totally a nusance. We live in a very typing heavy world and it’s a pain in the but on standard english computers.
