For girls names- DH and I have officially narrowed it down to [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], and [name_u]Adair[/name_u]. We are just about to ttc in [name_f]May[/name_f] so it is pretty cool to actually know we are naming an actual baby after many years of name discussion. We are also adopting and chose the name [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]- but I didn’t get the true experience naming her that I hoped for- because it’s like I woke up one day and just knew she was meant to be [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and couldn’t turn back from there. DH feels the same. We still have another 2 ish years till we are matched to our child even tho we have already been waiting 15 months so decided why not- let’s stop putting life on hold and ttc as well. The wait has been too emotional and agonizing- we are just going to switch up the order of how we do our family planning.
I have been working on getting him to love [name_u]Adair[/name_u] for awhile now and he finally admitted today it’s really growing on him. Still not sure what we will go with- but I’m glad he is finally keeping it on the list without resentment hah! It’s very much his style so I figured he would come around. Had to share that little victory.
One other question- I was looking at the top baby names in the UK today and saw how many gems they have on their list that don’t even rank in the top 500 in the US. I stopped and swooned for a moment over [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. Thoughts on [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]? [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] in general and then [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] with [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]?
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] would be gorgeous. As would [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] or [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] (all fresh sounding but with a strong, ancient appeal).
[name_u]Adair[/name_u] is fully masculine to me though. It’s got a pretty sound that I like the idea of, but I know many people with the surname (I’m on the border of [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]) and one teenage boy. With something so obviously feminine like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_u]Adair[/name_u]'s gender ambiguity doesn’t seem right.
I think [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] would be fine regardless of the surname - but I know a few very British little Amelies so it’s [name_m]French[/name_m] appeal is lost on me.
As for [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], I adore it. It was my best friend’s name, before she passed away from complications with heart surgery in 2011. She was such a strong, brave, beautiful soul, and I think of all of her best qualities when I hear [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]! I definitely prefer it with the accent–it looks bare without it to me!–but I just love the name, and most of the pronunciations. I’m not sure what nn I’d use for it–maybe [name_f]Mia[/name_f] or [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. Either way, it’s fantastic. I’ve had it as a MN for [name_f]Violet[/name_f] for a while, but I’m thinking of bumping it up to the FN position on my own list. I would love to meet a little [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] are darling together.
Great feedback! Thank you so much for taking the time. I will definitely take that into account for [name_u]Adair[/name_u]. I do think it might be uncommon enough in the states that people don’t even know boy or girl- I’m not sure. I’m usually not into gender neutral girls names so it’s definitely the odd one out in that. For some reason it feels frilly and feminine in my mind.
I have the name [name_f]Alair[/name_f] on my list, which I personally think is way more feminine and nice-sounding. Maybe it could be an alternative to [name_u]Adair[/name_u]?
[name_u]Adair[/name_u] is such a lovely name and sounds nice with [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. It’s classy, sophisticated, and not overused, yet shouldn’t have many pronunciation issues and can have nn [name_f]Addie[/name_f] if one is needed for such a gorgeous name. I personally believe it is an undiscovered gem of a name, which is sad because it’s such a great name but nice because it isn’t overused so they won’t have the issue of having multiple kids in the class of the same name.
[name_u]Adair[/name_u] is one that had to grow on me as well. I like it now, though!
Maybe it’s just because I did my schooling in [name_m]French[/name_m], but I don’t like [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] at all. I think it sounds awkward in English.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] are very [name_m]French[/name_m], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] are very UK. I think [name_u]Adair[/name_u] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] are unexpected together, and definitely have the most “wow factor” together.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] are great, too!
