Thank you Nameberry for making me fall in love with [name]Adelaide[/name] and then last minute shocking me with your news that it will be in the top 100 next year. I now totally hate you. What is a [name]Berry[/name] to do? I have 7 days to either choose a new name or stick with [name]Adelaide[/name] and pray she doesn’t turn into just another [name]Madison[/name] or [name]Emma[/name].
I love [name]Adelaide[/name]. But if you are seriously having doubts, [name]Eleanor[/name] is great (you could call her [name]Nellie[/name]!) and [name]Fiona[/name] is fabulous!
I don’t believe in [name]Florida[/name] we’ll be seeing any little Adelaides soon. In my neck of the woods, new parents just make up names. NB is a rarefied world. The new children I know are: [name]Tianna[/name] (girl, [name]Florida[/name]), [name]Cameron[/name] (boy, [name]Florida[/name]), [name]Cora[/name] (girl, [name]Florida[/name]), [name]Maximilian[/name] (boy, Michigan), and [name]Rowan[/name] (boy, Kamloops, BC). I don’t think you should worry. (It’s my students whose kids have made up names, except for one little guy named [name]Carson[/name].)
If you are happy with [name]Adelaide[/name]- try not to worry too much! [name]Adelaide[/name] is a beautiful name and is ranked at 438 for 2010 on the social security website! Your [name]Adelaide[/name] most likely will not have another [name]Adelaide[/name] in her kindergarten class!
I’m so sorry, Missby – don’t hate us! Nameberry Top 10 is not the same as U.S. Top 10 – far from it. And [name]Adelaide[/name] of course is gorgeous. BUT, yes, it’s true, not only is [name]Adelaide[/name] rising (nowhere near Top 100 yet, but wait a year or five…), there are SO many other similar names that have very quickly found favor. Still lots of Addisons around plus [name]Ada[/name], [name]Adeline[/name] (definitely do not see this as a substitute, would be more like frying pan into the fire), [name]Addie[/name], and yes, even [name]Adele[/name]. Another [name]Madison[/name] or [name]Emma[/name]? Not quite, but trending in that direction.
I might suggest [name]Adelia[/name], which is beautiful, but will still leave you in the [name]Ad[/name]- vortex. [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Vivienne[/name] I’m afraid are similarly traditional-yet-trendy. [name]Nell[/name] definitely helps with [name]Eleanor[/name]; you don’t want to go to [name]Ellie[/name] or [name]Ella[/name] which has the same problem as [name]Addie[/name] etc. [name]Fiona[/name], very pretty, though some dislike the Shrek association.
[name]Sela[/name] is lovely despite some pronunciation issues and confusion with [name]Celia[/name], [name]Cecilia[/name].
What did you love most about [name]Adelaide[/name]? What would you be looking for in a substitute?
[name]Even[/name] if [name]Adelaide[/name] becomes more popular, you’ll be one of the trend-setters for using it so soon. I think it might be nice to to have a name that was ahead of its time in terms of popularity. I’d be surprised if this name jumped straight to the top 100 right away. This seems to happen with a few names, but most of them seem to have more gradual climbs.
I don’t think you need to worry about [name]Adelaide[/name] becoming too popular, especially among the general public. I think that [name]Adele[/name] and [name]Vivienne[/name] probably will become more generally popular, but [name]Adelaide[/name] is a more rarefied name, IMHO. It’s lovely!
[name]Adelaide[/name] has been jumping an average of 100 spots a year for the last six years. That gives you another 3 years before it reaches the top 100, and its popularity could certainly cool off by then.
I don’t think you should panic about [name]Adelaide[/name] (see SSA stats below). Only 705 girls were named [name]Adelaide[/name] in the US last year so even if it does increase, I don’t think it will be cause for concern. Unless there are a bunch of them running around in your neck of the woods, I think you should cast aside your doubts and choose it. It has a lot of vintage charm that is too lovely to pass up. Compare it to the 100th name Rachel with 2,962 girls and the No# 1 Isabella with 22,731. It has a very long road to go.
[name]Adelaide[/name] is lovely, but I doubt it’ll become the next [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Madison[/name]… it may be a NB favorite, but very few people I know would see its appeal. It’s an acquired taste to those who aren’t nameaholics.
I do love @pam’s suggestion of [name]Adelia[/name], though… familiar a la [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Amelia[/name], and [name]Aurelia[/name], but still distinctive. It’s been one of my favorites (and my favorite [name]Addy[/name] name!) for years now.
[name]Aurelia[/name] might also be a nice option for you… it has a similar feel to [name]Adelaide[/name], imo, and it hasn’t been on the SSA list since the 1960s. I do see [name]Aurelia[/name] growing in popularity in the future, but not anywhere near as fast as [name]Adelaide[/name] is…
As for the names on your list, the only ones less popular than [name]Adelaide[/name] are [name]Adele[/name] and [name]Sela[/name]… [name]Sela[/name]'s not listed, and [name]Adele[/name] is low on the SSA list. [name]Adele[/name] might be another nice choice if you love the [name]Addy[/name] names.
Thanks everyone. I am calming down now. I guess just like many of you I had dreams of having the perfect name that everyone loves but not everyone has…totally not realistic! My husband and I love [name]Adelaide[/name] so I think we will stick with it. I just needed some reassurance.
[name]Pam[/name], totally joking about hating NB! I really appreciate at least being warned ahead of time that my name choice is gaining popularity. I gave up naming her [name]Ella[/name] or [name]Madeleine[/name] due to popularity and I think I’m just not willing to give up yet another name I love for the sake of being unique. Thanks again for all of your suggestions!!!
[name]Adelaide[/name] is a very nice name I had not heard until when naming our second daughter, I learned it was my dh’s grandmother’s name and I have yet to meet one yet. I say go for it-especially if you love it. And even though it may be climbing in popularity-I think the days of having 10 [name]Jennifer[/name]'s in one class are gone as everyone is trying so hard to be different. So even if [name]Adelaide[/name] may be a big name-my guess is there will be other variations she’ll grow up around as well.
I wouldn’t worry about it. [name]Madison[/name] and [name]Emma[/name] are top ten! Top 100 is far from that! So even if it does eventually become popular, that’s a long way off!
I think [name]Adelaide[/name] is absolutely beautiful. I don’t think you need to worry too much about it turning super popular. [name]Adalyn[/name] and [name]Adeline[/name] will probably be first to get up there. If you think its pretty and you love it, I think you should stick with it. Because if you choose something different you may always go bac to the name [name]Adelaide[/name] and wish you had used it. But, if you do decide to use a different name, all of your other choices are beautiful too. [name]Sela[/name] is unique and very pretty, and im loving [name]Vivienne[/name]! However, [name]Adele[/name] may pose the same problem [name]Adelaide[/name] has. I think [name]Adele[/name] is climbing the charts too. I don’t think they’ll ever be top 25 though, just my opinion.
edit— [name]Just[/name] saw you said you are sticking with it. That’s great! I love [name]Adelaide[/name]!
