Is Adeleide/[name]Adelaide[/name] always only pronounced [name]Add[/name]-uh-laid? Is Adeleide an accepted spelling?
If I saw Adeleide I would pronounce it [name]Add[/name]-uhh-leed
I have always thought it was spelled Adeleide and pronounced add-uh-lide(rhyme with hide.) Thus the diminutive [name]Heidi[/name].([name]German[/name] Adelheide)
I believe the [name]German[/name] version is spelled [name]Adelheid[/name] (pronounced hide).
[name]Adelaide[/name] - add-ah-layd
[name]Adelheid[/name] - addle-hide
The Portuguese pronunciation of [name]Adelaide[/name] is [uh-d-LIED]. In French [name]Ad[/name]élaïde is [ah-deh-lah-EED]
This. In English anyway.
If I ran into any of these spellings (maybe except [name]Adelheid[/name] or Adelheide), I would pronounce it [name]Add[/name]-uh-laid. Of course, I would alter that prn if the parent or child corrected me, but since that pronunciation is the only one I’ve ever heard, I would use it for almost any version of that name. With the “h” to me, it signals more of a “heidi” pronunciation.
So Adeleide pronounced [name]Add[/name]-uh-lide is not a name technically? My sisters name is [name]Heidi[/name] and I kind of wanted to use Adeleide/[name]Adelaide[/name] to honor her, but I don’t really care for the Layd pronunciation. I thought I had heard the lide pronunciation before but maybe not… Could I spell it [name]Adelheid[/name] and make the h sound really soft and quick? I don’t really like the strong h sound. Or is that just completely “ruining” the name?
