Adelie

recently seen this name on here and can’t stop thinking about it! but the only problem is, my last name is french, though i don’t speak it. do you think people would randomly speak french to her thinking she’s french?? would it cause confusion?

I don’t think it would sound too [name_u]French[/name_u] for someone who doesn’t speak [name_u]French[/name_u]. I suppose it might depend on where you live, but even a very French-sounding name wouldn’t make me assume the person spoke [name_u]French[/name_u]. [name_f]Adelie[/name_f] is a lovely choice!

That might be a different case, living in a country where many people speak [name_u]French[/name_u]! I know there are Berries who live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] – I think their input is probably more relevant than mine, then, as I don’t know what the assumption would be there.

I’d assume she’s French, but it wouldn’t mean I’d assume much else. I wouldn’t be up at night wondering why she has a French name but doesn’t speak French, or anything!

I’d assume she has [name_u]French[/name_u] roots but no I would not assume she is 100% french or that she knows how to speak it.

[name_f]Adelie[/name_f] doesn’t strike me as overly [name_u]French[/name_u]

I agree with @FleurDeForce and would think that she has [name_u]French[/name_u] roots/ancestors and being you have a [name_u]French[/name_u] surname, she maybe would have? I would not expect that she speaks [name_u]French[/name_u] so I don’t think it would cause confusion. [name_f]Adelie[/name_f] is beautiful and if you love it, I hope you feel great about choosing it!

I think you need to ask people from your area but in the southern US the answer is definitely no. :joy:
