Adolf or Ashley - which would you rather name a boy?

I wonder if [name]Adolf[/name]/[name]Adolph[/name] will ever come back. It’s not a bad name, actually. Maybe in another 50 years? Although you don’t see any little Attilas running around.

I could see [name]Adolf[/name] coming back waaay in the future, perhaps. People name their kids [name]Napoleon[/name] and [name]Wilhelm[/name] (like the kaiser) despite being hateful war mongers themselves. However, it’s hard to beat Hitler on the list of most. Horrible. People. [name]Ever[/name].

I could see the Spanish name [name]Adolfo[/name] come back before [name]Adolf[/name]. I do think there isn’t as strong of a connection to Hitler for the name [name]Adolf[/name] in some Latin American cultures and communities. But then they might never name a child [name]Fidel[/name] or [name]Hugo[/name], but we don’t think as much about those associations as theymight, right?

But I still would choose [name]Ashley[/name]. Hello, [name]Ashley[/name] [name]Wilkes[/name]?!? [name]Ashley[/name] is a great name for sboy, and I’veknown several boy Ashleys myself.

If people start naming children [name]Adolf[/name] again it will take away that association with Hitler. Personally, I like the name and I much prefer it to [name]Ashley[/name]. When I think of the dictator I think ‘Hitler’ not ‘[name]Adolf[/name]’, although obviously I would recognise the association others make. I don’t know if I’d be willing to name my child that but if it were a choice between these two then yes! And it isn’t because of a feminine association, since all the [name]Ashley[/name]'s I have known are male, I just really dislike ‘[name]Ashley[/name]’ on either sex

Um… That name deserves to die. [name]Adolf[/name] is the name of a murderer and no time can erase the memory.

I have no idea why people even consider names like [name]Adolph[/name] when there are literally a billion others to choose from. Not getting down on the thread poster, I’m getting down on the people who actually name their kids [name]Adolph[/name]. Unless you’re completely ignorant, there really is no excuse

[name]Ashley[/name]! There is no contest, even… I can’t even imagine considering [name]Adolf[/name] for a boy. Everything Hitler did makes me sick–I’m about to start shaking with fury over here just thinking about it, lol. I’ve been to the Holocaust Museum in [name]Washington[/name], D. C., and my best friend’s great-grandparents lived through it, so it’s very real to me and there’s no possible way I would ever consider to use it. [name]Just[/name] the fact that someone would kind of makes me sick to my stomach.

Besides, [name]Ashley[/name]'s kind of a family name… it’s my name, it’s my uncle’s MN, and his brother’s FN. [name]Asher[/name] is on my top 5 (possibly top 3), and I absolutely love the nn [name]Ash[/name] for a boy so I actually like [name]Ashley[/name] on a boy, haha.

There’s a ton of Attilas in Hungary.

I would rather use [name]Ashley[/name]. It’s a bit Gone With The Wind for me and I prefer the Biblical [name]Asher[/name], but it doesn’t make me nauseated. The idea of having a son named [name]Adolf[/name] makes me ill.

Of course I don’t think [name]Adolf[/name] going to regain popularity amongst Jews (I am one) even if it becomes the rage amongst other groups.

I’m not really sure what is supposed to be all that wrong with [name]Ashley[/name] anyway, I’ve known boy Ashleys before.

[name]Ashley[/name]. I don’t like the name [name]Adolf[/name] at all, and the association is just awful.

I’d do [name]Ashley[/name] nn [name]Ash[/name].

I know more boy Ashleys than girl Ashleys (only one, and it was spelled [name]Ashleigh[/name] anyway) and I do like it on a boy better than a girl so there’s no question here really. Forgetting the associaton, [name]Adolf[/name] sounds really harsh when you say it, and I’d wager a kid being bullied over it (a dolt, a doll, etc).

[name]Ashley[/name]. There’s a famous male [name]Nova[/name] Scotian fiddler named [name]Ashley[/name] MacIsaac, so to me wouldn’t be that big of a deal, and he could go by the cool nickname [name]Ash[/name] if it was going to be a problem.

Naming a boy [name]Adolf[/name] is basically child abuse. In fact, there was a story in the news recently about a New [name]Jersey[/name] family who had their sons taken away and put into foster care for naming them “[name]Adolf[/name] Hitler” and “[name]Aryan[/name] Nation.” If I met a little boy named [name]Adolf[/name] I’d probably assume that his parents were some kind of white power nutcases, or at the very least colossally ignorant.

[name]Ashley[/name]. It is a male name here in the UK. I have never ever met a girl called [name]Ashley[/name]. [name]Even[/name] if it were more feminine in the UK, I would still use [name]Ashley[/name] rather than [name]Adolf[/name]. A male [name]Ashley[/name] won’t get turned down on job applications, and more importantly he won’t be associated with the most evil guy in history.

Is this really even up for debate? I can’t imagine someone choosing [name]Adolf[/name] over [name]Ashley[/name]. Hell, if I could only name my son [name]Adolf[/name] or susie I would pick [name]Susie[/name] in a heartbeat.

That being said [name]Adolph[/name] is not a completely unheard of name amongst Mexicans (I can’t remember why though) [name]Adolph[/name] hoffner is a famous Hispanic western swing musician and for some reason I’ve never found his name offensive, maybe it’s because the spelling is different?

Yeah I posted in my reply that [name]Adolph[/name] (this spelling from what I know) is not unheard of in the hispanic community so it’s interesting to hear that a nameberry actually knows one. I have always assumed that these people are unaware (not likely) or can overlook what Hitler did, I especially cannot imagine any European using this name considering the devastation he caused to the country.

Yuuck neither one
they are both awful

An interesting question. I would go with [name]Ashley[/name] without hesitation. But I am wondering what it is about [name]Adolf[/name] as opposed to [name]Joseph[/name] (Stalin) that makes the first name tainted by the last name. Is it that [name]Joseph[/name] is counter pointed by the Biblical [name]Joseph[/name] so we have a good reference to counteract the bad one, and [name]Adolf[/name] doesn’t benefit from this? Or is there something else going on here?

Also, are there any examples from women in history that would make a name for a girl less popular?

[name]ASHLEY[/name]! Why would someone name their son, [name]Adolf[/name]? Take Hitler out and I still would not see the appeal to it.

I think it’s because most of the focus in the classroom is put on what Hitler did during the Holocaust, and less emphasis is put on what Stalin did to people. A lot of teenagers at my school didn’t even know that Stalin committed atrocious acts during his rule.

Yes, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of famous Josephs including many positive role models to choose from, but only one (in)famous [name]Adolf[/name].

As for girls’ names, I can’t think of anything comparable to [name]Adolf[/name]. The girl’s name [name]Odessa[/name] was also the name of a branch of the Nazi S.S., so that name is forever tainted for me.

[name]Ashley[/name] is still used more for boys than girls where I live…

I actually quite like [name]Ashley[/name] on a boy; had it not been for the potential of homophobic insults and teasing, I’d put this name high up on my list. That and I think boys should take back names that were once theirs. (okay, almost all of them)

Hitler association aside, I still wouldn’t consider using [name]Adolf[/name] because it just doesn’t sound too appealing to me.
