Adopting a little brother for Leo

…and we cannot find a name we love as much as our son’s name. We prefer something strong that keeps that “L” sound but not at the beginning, preferably the end. Some names we like but don’t love are:

[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Gale[/name]
[name]Charlie[/name]
Kolbe
[name]Malcolm[/name]

We do love the name [name]Karol[/name] for many reasons… It has a four-way family/personal significance, but I am chicken to give it to a real boy.

Thanks!

I think [name]Karol[/name] is such a great boys name!! I really wish you’d use it. Maybe [name]Malcolm[/name] [name]Karol[/name]?

Congratulations on your adoption!

I really love [name]Gabriel[/name], and I think [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name] sound great for brothers. I really love [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Charlie[/name], too, although I’d do [name]Charles[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name] personally. I love the idea of using [name]Karol[/name] as a MN (unless you use [name]Charlie[/name], maybe? [name]Charles[/name] [name]Karol[/name]/[name]Charlie[/name] [name]Karol[/name] is a bit repetitive, especially since they both come from [name]Carolus[/name], from what I’ve heard).

What about:

[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] (you obviously couldn’t use [name]Theo[/name], though, maybe [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Teddy[/name]?)
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Gray[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Spencer[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Asher[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Daniel[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Christian[/name]/[name]Christopher[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]August[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Patrick[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Julian[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Zane[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Zachary[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]William[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Jonah[/name]/s (or even [name]Josiah[/name], or [name]Joel[/name], or [name]Joseph[/name]?)
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Bennett[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Micah[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Noah[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Jude[/name]

Good luck!

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Gabriel[/name]! Other suggestions:
[name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Callum[/name]
[name]Elijah[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Cale[/name]
[name]Caleb[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Cole[/name]
[name]William[/name]
[name]Paul[/name]
Dashell (sp?)
[name]Felix[/name]

Here are some more ideas.
[name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Abel[/name]
[name]Noel[/name]
[name]Solomon[/name]
[name]Alec[/name]
[name]Elias[/name]

Oooooh, I love [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Gale[/name]! That’s an adorable combination.
I think [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Dashiell[/name] ("[name]Dash[/name]") would be cute too or [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Joel[/name] as well.
I know it’s spelled [name]Karol[/name], but I have a female friend name [name]Carol[/name], so I’d be concerned that he may be teased with that name. Maybe use [name]Karol[/name] as a middle name? I think of all the names, either [name]Charlie[/name] [name]Karol[/name] or [name]Malcolm[/name] [name]Karol[/name] would work.

I’ll echo Berry2’s suggestion of [name]Callum[/name] - I think it sounds great with [name]Leo[/name]. I have a nephew [name]Callan[/name] - which I think would also sound really nice! [name]Karol[/name] is a nice name but I’d really consider using as a middle name instead - honestly, I always imagine my child’s name on a resume someday and I can assure you that many will read that name and be expecting [name]Karol[/name] to be a girl, not to mention the teasing that children will inevitably come up with…

I’ll just throw some random suggestions out there.

[name]Colton[/name]
[name]Eli[/name]
[name]Ross[/name]
[name]Roman[/name]
[name]Joel[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]

But I love [name]Gabriel[/name]! And as common as it is I only know one. I also love the nn [name]Gabe[/name]. I think [name]Gabriel[/name] [name]Malcolm[/name] would be awesome!

Thanks for your help! We are heading toward [name]Gabriel[/name] Campion [name]Karol[/name], nn [name]Gael[/name] or [name]Gale[/name], and our last name starts with “[name]Mac[/name].” These names are special family-connected names to us, so I think in the end that’s the deciding factor over the others. That way he will have some options!

I love [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Charlie[/name]/[name]Charles[/name].

I appreciate the family significance of [name]Karol[/name], but would advise you NOT to use it as his first name. I went to school with a boy named [name]Carol[/name] and he was teased mercilessly because of it. That name is all girl in the minds of a bunch of middle school kids.

I like [name]Carol[/name] on a boy. I know a male [name]Carroll[/name], and the worst teasing he ever got was people singing him [name]Christmas[/name] carols. However, given today’s trends, [name]Karol[/name] does look more like a girl’s name. It’s a perfect middle name choice, though!

[name]Gabriel[/name] Campion [name]Karol[/name] is an interesting choice, but I’m not sure what I think of it yet.

Another vote for [name]Gabriel[/name].

That said, I certainly hope that unless you’re adopting your son as an infant you will respect him, his heritage, and his first parents enough to leave his real name alone.

Wow, I am a little taken aback by that, since you know nothing of the circumstances of our adoption or why those names are meaningful to us, but I assure you that every part of the name is a very conscious effort to be sensitive to the unique naming process of adoption. Perhaps the spelling of Karol is a connection to Polish heritage, perhaps Campion is a name taken from the list of suggestions we asked for from the birth family, perhaps Gabriel has a special meaning for the specific circumstances of this baby—the point is, you don’t know and shouldn’t assume that we would not choose a meaningful, thoughtful name.

It is frustrating to me, though, that your “hope” for us to be respectful comes across as pretty insensitive itself. Do you have some reason to believe we would not be respectful??? Our son Leo was adopted too, so we are more than well aware of how it all works, and he also has a three names that were chosen to later on help him understand and be proud of his story.

So few people understand what it is like to go through adoption, I know I didn’t until we actually did. If you have, then you know how adoption is a long and extraordinarily tedious process that puts you under a microscope in every possible way. No matter how old a child is when he or she is adopted, comments about what is and is not “real” for an adopted child (names, parents, etc.) are very hurtful and can be confusing to a child. Do you think that adoptive parents aren’t real parents? It amazes me that a friendly and fun inquiry about name advice can bring out such insensitivity. If I have really misread you, I apologize, but please be more careful how you speak about adoption. It is such a huge gift and blessing that should never be undermined as somehow “not real” or second-best.

I knew a boy named [name]Carol[/name]. Not sure about spelling but that’s how it was said. My sister’s high school boyfriend.

I’ve always thought [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Eli[/name] would be great together.
