Advice on Potential Names

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I am a long time lurker on the forum but would love opinions on our current list.

My husband and I are just looking at names now. We are only planning to have two children so any help on the best siblings on both girls and boys and combinations between genders would be great! Fraternal twins do run in his family so there is a chance of twins. Additionally, we would love suggestions as well on other names and middle name possibilities.

Current List of Boy Names:

[name_m]Harrison[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Harry[/name_m])

[name_u]Chandler[/name_u]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] (nn [name_m]Eli[/name_m])
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u])
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Dash[/name_u])

Current List of Girl Names:

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Ella[/name_f])
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] ([name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a family name, can it be used as a nn for eloise?)
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Milly[/name_f], on the fence with the spelling since prefer the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], but we think it will be misspelled a lot as people will assume [name_f]Amelia[/name_f])
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Daisy[/name_f])
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (we do not love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but was wondering if [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] could be a nickname for [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] or [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]?) I hesitate to use it as full name since it may not suit the child later in life.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Delia[/name_f])

Thank you!

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f]!

From your boy list, I love [name_m]Miles[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] and [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] (and my husband doesn’t like them very well so I’m always recommending them to others!). I find they’re all classic but not overused and they have a bit more energy than some really classic names. I solidly like [name_m]Harrison[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u] “[name_m]Eli[/name_m]”, and [name_u]Morgan[/name_u].

I don’t care for [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] - for no particular reason it really rubs me the wrong way… I get a sinister kind of vibe from it, oddly enough. And to me, [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] still feels too linked to the Friends character - not that that’s a problem necessarily, but it just isn’t a name that’s transcended the character to me, if that makes sense.

You might also like: [name_m]Ewan[/name_m], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_m]Damian[/name_m], [name_u]Jameson[/name_u], [name_m]Leander[/name_m] (possible nn [name_m]Leo[/name_m]), [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]

As to girls: I don’t see why [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] couldn’t be used as a nickname for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] (actually I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone do or suggest that because it sounds pretty intuitive to me). And [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] would definitely work as a nickname for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], though I’m less certain about it as a nickname for [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]… I mean, probably it works. I think my hesitation comes from [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] starting with the “f” sound rather than the “p” sound, but if [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] can come from [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] should be able to come from [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].

As to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] vs [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], I imagine you’re probably right that [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] would be misspelled as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] quite a bit, but I do like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] better since someone pointed out that [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is also the name of a birth defect (Amelia (birth defect) - Wikipedia). Obviously [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] still gets a lot of use and probably most people don’t know about the birth defect, but it was enough to send me to Team [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].

And also, I don’t imagine that a lot of people know about [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. If you’d plan to call her [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] all of the time, I’d vote that you just name her [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]. If you’d only sometimes call her [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], though, [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is lovely - a more delicate alternative to [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and with many nickname possibilities.

I unreservedly love [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f], and I really like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] so long as your surname doesn’t have too many “s” sounds in it as I could imagine it sounding hissy with some surnames ([name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_m]Simpson[/name_m], for example). [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] has always felt kind of cold to me, but that could change if I met a really sweet person named [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f].
