Aesop. Yes, as in, of "fables" fame

Am I completely insane?

I don’t know why, but this name just popped into my head today and I was suddenly overcome with a bizarre infatuation with it. I can’t even describe why I like it. “[name]Ace[/name]” is an adorable nickname, but is [name]Aesop[/name] like, out-of-the-stratosphere out there? Or could you conceivably see it being wearable for a boy?

The association really isn’t bad, I guess. I mean, it’s strong. I think pretty much everyone thinks “[name]Aesop[/name]'s Fables” when they think of [name]Aesop[/name]. But, it’s a book of fables, which are stories that convey some sort of moral. And that’s kinda cool.

But, I still feel like I’m being crazy for liking it so much. Anyone want to talk some sense into me? (Or else, agree with me that it’s a cool name?)

I like it a lot, but I would never use it myself (though two of your other names for boys’ on your list-- [name]Kian[/name] & Caelum are in our own top 5). Part of the reason is not only do I associate it with [name]Aesop[/name]'s Fables (which is one of those timeless collections that will be around for many many generations, and will be famous forever), but I also associate it with the underground hip-hop artist [name]Aesop[/name] [name]Rock[/name] (who has quite an enormous underground following-- an artist known by many millions of people in the US and Europe). If it wasn’t for the associations I think it could be a decent name, but I feel like the associations are too overshadowing to make the name usable for me.

I like it.

Wow, how cool to find someone else who likes my weird names and has them on their list!

Interesting about the hip hop artist. I’ve never heard of him. I wonder if that’s his actual name? And good point that the association with the fables will be around indefinitely (as opposed to like a Twilight book association or something).

I think it could work. It’s unusual, but it’s certainly a name that almost everyone would be familiar with, able to pronounce, etc. After the initial thought of [name]Aesop[/name]'s fables fades, I think friends and family would easily associate it with your child, since there’s really only the one reference to live up to, he can basically make it his own. Personally, it’s nms or at least more likely a middle. But at least you would never run out of bedtime story ideas. =]

I really like it! [name]Ace[/name] as a nn is so cool!

I really like it. The NN [name]Ace[/name] is fantasitc obviously.
It sounds pleasing and connection with the fables shall means less likely havign to spell the name out or correct spelligs for his whole life!

I hate to be the voice of dissent, but I do think that [name]Aesop[/name] is pretty out there. I do like [name]Ace[/name] as a nn but I don’t like the sound of -sop as an ending. I think that you would also have some pronunciation issues.

[name]Eamon[/name] has a similar feel.

Possible options for [name]Ace[/name] as a nn:
[name]Atticus[/name]
[name]Anson[/name]
[name]Axel[/name]

I think it’s fab! Unless you’re one of those Luddite pickle-makers living in [name]Portland[/name] or Redhook, and your husband cultivates a handlebar moustache. Then I think it might be a little too on-point.
I like Kipling too (as in [name]Just[/name]-So Stories.)

LOL. I live in [name]Portland[/name]. And I have made pickles before. I am cracking up so much right now!!

But, no handlebar mustache. Neither husband or I are really that kind of a weirdo.

I associate the name with [name]Aesop[/name] [name]Rock[/name], who is awesome. [name]Aesop[/name] [name]Rock[/name]'s real name is [name]Ian[/name] [name]Matthias[/name] Bavitz.

I have a hard time picturing it on a kid because all I think about is rap and hip-hop when I hear it.

It is the ‘sop’ part that ruins it for me. It is [name]OTT[/name] and I think it would be a very hard name to wear because of its fable history.

I like [name]Anson[/name] or Aeson nn [name]Ace[/name] but I think [name]Aesop[/name] is an unpleasant sound due to the “sop” ending.

I wouldn’t have thought of the fables if nobody had mentioned them (the author’s name is spelled and pronounced differently in my language). Instead, my first thought was a character in the 1996 Whoopi Goldberg movie, The Associate, named Aesop Franklin, because this is the only occasion I have come across the name in an English-speaking context. I always thought it was a rather cool name (I also really like Asa). However, since the association with the fables appears to be a very strong one, it would probably be rather heard to wear as a first name, but I could definitely see it work in the middle spot.

I quite like the name. I do think it is wearable.

I.love.it. And am seriously jealous that I didn’t think of it. Immediately on my list of maybes.

I like the sound. I don’t see what the problem is with the ending, but I do love the sound. I don’t think the fables is a big deal. People still name their kids [name]Virgil[/name] and the only [name]Virgil[/name] I can think of is the famous one. People name their kids after gods and goddesses and no one ever says “Oh [name]Athena[/name], no I think the connection with the goddess is too much.” They say “I think the connection is so cool.”
Besides, it’s not like it’s a bad association. I think the little boy named [name]Aesop[/name] reading [name]Aesop[/name]'s Fables who be just tickled. And honestly, there aren’t ay children I work with who know what [name]Aesop[/name]'s Fables are.

But if you decide you want something else, Aeson has a similar sound and still has [name]Ace[/name] as a nickname. Aeson was the father of [name]Jason[/name] (of golden fleece fame) in Greek myth.

I like the Aeson suggestions. I think that’d be a great alternative.

I like the way you think.

Would Aeson be weird if his father’s name is [name]Jason[/name]? I’m kinda thinking probably so…
