Aesthetics: Gunner

What sort of vibe does the name Gunner give you?

[name_m]Gunner[/name_m] gives me southern, woodsy, outdoors-man vibes.

[name_m]Gunner[/name_m], though less so than [name_m]Gunnar[/name_m], actually makes me think of Scandinavia more than I think of guns at all. I picture a strong, outdoorsy man works in an office but spends his weekends hiking or camping.

Unfortunately in my field (think professional schools like medical or law school), a gunner is someone who is overly competitive and ambitious, striving to be #1 so that’s what I think of - no one else has mentioned this so maybe this definition isn’t as well known? I can see the southern US outdoorsy vibe too but it’s not my first thought. I know it has history and use like in Scandinavia so it’s unfortunate I don’t have great associations and aesthetics with this name. I don’t have these negative associations with Gunther and Gunnar though so maybe these would appeal to you?

With [name_m]Gunner[/name_m], I would think:
American - other nationalities are probably less likely to use this name. I know [name_m]Gunnar[/name_m] is a traditional Scandinavian name but I’m not sure if the form [name_m]Gunner[/name_m] is used there.
[name_m]Young[/name_m], probably under 20
His parents are probably fond of guns and own a few (otherwise I don’t see why they would choose such a literal name? I mean, [name_m]Gunnar[/name_m] has a different history but [name_m]Gunner[/name_m] is literally the word “gunner”)

I just think of the definition of the word, someone who uses a gun.

Either Scandi vibes or the parents are lead farmers and needed everybody to know vibes.
