Affadilla? What do you think

My Great great great great Aunt’s name was Affadilla. She worked to help free slaves prior to the civil war. [name]Do[/name] you think her name is usable today or is it just too daffy?

I think it would be a cool name in the middle spot with a great story. Its a little much for a first name, [name]IMO[/name].

Not a fan at all. Sounds like a strange nickname for [name]Daffodil[/name].

I think it would make for a wonderful middle name with great honoring purposes behind it. While I wouldn’t say it is unusable as a first name, it does seem a bit out there for me. On the other hand, the significance it has for you makes it hard to resist, so who knows. It has lots of nickname potential, I’m sure.

On her census records she is also recorded as Effadilla, Apphia, & Appadilla.

I saw this in a baby name book but Afrodille is a name of French origin that means [name]Daffodil[/name]. It’s not Affadilla but similar, has been used and is quite pretty.

It’s too unusual for me. Looks like the Pig Latin spelling of [name]Daffodil[/name].

Afrodille must be a very old French word for daffodil. It’s not in use today- they are called jonquilles or narcisses.

It reminds me of a legal term, Affidavit? I think that’s it

It has a great history behind it. And that too me, makes it usuable. I don’t know what nn’s would work though. [name]Affie[/name], sounds off. Dill or [name]Dillie[/name] isn’t really cute. I think it needs a cute nn option…any ideas?

I think Apphia could be usable. Sounds like a nn for [name]Aphrodite[/name].

Affadilla reminds me of affidavit which is a weird connection.

I could maybe get behind Effadilla as a middle name.

I wish I knew the story behind her name. All her siblings have regular names for their time period like [name]James[/name] and [name]Bernard[/name].

I agree with Kibby --first thing I thought of was affidavit. And yet somehow Apphia doesn’t pain me as much. Phonetically Apphia is lovely. Maybe drop a “P”? [name]Aphia[/name]? [name]Afia[/name]? Not sure what to do with it, but since the census records were a bit all over the place as far as what the actual name is, there’s no reason you can’t tweak it to make it more wearable for a modern girl, in my opinion. The sentiment and her legacy are certainly worth honouring. Good luck!

I agree with the others who thought of affidavit. Apphia is pretty though.
