My husband and I are at a loss for a girl’s name for our second. We have eliminated [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Louise[/name]/[name]Louisa[/name], [name]Ursula[/name], [name]Helen[/name]/a/ene. We like the classics, but after looking at list after list on blog after blog I am not inspired by any of the old standards; while lovely, none feel like my daughter’s name, if that makes any sense.
When I gave a second look to [name]Agatha[/name] it suddenly seems to be the only name that works. It sounds and feels right. I’m a little concerned about its reception. Is it too outdated? Too musty? Too hipster? I’m not a big fan of [name]Aggie[/name], but we would prefer to use full names regardless, though I know she or her friends could choose to use a nickname of her/their own.
I like the alliteration of [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Ann[/name]/e. [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is another contender.
[name]Agatha[/name] is dated, but I’ve always liked if for some reason! Maybe because when I was young I used to spend hours watching [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Christie[/name] shows on TV. [name]Alas[/name], DH automatically vetoed it. I do think, however, for [name]Agatha[/name] to work this day in age it would pair best with a spunky, young middle name.
[name]Agatha[/name] has grown on me but its still an old fashioned name and most people would probably be shocked to see a little girl named [name]Agatha[/name]. I like the sound of it though. The “Aga” part gives it some strength and separates it from all the [name]Elle[/name]/[name]Bella[/name]/[name]Anne[/name]/[name]Anna[/name]/lie/ly names that are so popular right now, but the “tha” at the end softens it. It is the type of name a little girl might not like when she is young, but would probably grow to love it as she gets older. I would try to find a cute girly nickname or middle name to go with it.
Personally I feel like [name]Agatha[/name] is quite musty and I would find it difficult to call a sweet little girl by that name. If you love it though, I say go for it! [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Ann[/name] though seems far too plain/old/stale. I think [name]Elizabeth[/name] would help soften/brighten the name up a bit.
I love it! I think [name]Agatha[/name] is going to come back like [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] have- I remember hearing people talking about how those were old-ladyish but they’ve become very popular again.
I prefer [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] to [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Ann[/name]. I think [name]Agatha[/name] would also go well with a more modern or popular name to lighten it, like [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Lily[/name], or [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Kate[/name].
I like it! It’s so old it’s new again. However, I do think you should use a fresher middle name. [name]Even[/name] [name]Anne[/name] could work. The -e gives it a more feminine vibe. I think [name]Elizabeth[/name] works too, but I like [name]Anne[/name] better.
[name]Agatha[/name] is better than [name]Agnes[/name], which is also coming back. I’m an [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Christie[/name] fan and I keep thinking it might come back, and now it seems it might see at least an upturn in it’s popularity.
I like [name]Agatha[/name]! [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Ann[/name] is hard for me to say for some reason (it gets caught up in my mouth), but that could just be me. I might want to put something zestier in the middle to counteract the old fuddyduddiness of Agtha. [name]Elizabeth[/name] is such a traditional middle name that the whole thing could start to sound plain. [name]Even[/name] [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Annette[/name] sounds fresher to me.
I have an almost two year old [name]Agatha[/name] We’ve had really positive reactions to her name and because she’s such a cutie-pie it’s easy to see it as a cute name if you see what I mean. We chose [name]Arwen[/name] as a middle name as we wanted something fresh alongside the old-fashioned [name]Agatha[/name] and we think it really works.
It’s the perfect name for our gorgeous girl and I still adore it as much as the day I first suggested it to DH!
Many people may think it’s strange since it’s an older name, but it is a beautiful name. Easy to say and spell! And, the benefit is you won’t have five other children in your daughter’s class with the same name!
[name]Love[/name] it! I used to have [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Anne[/name] (like [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables, I like the “e” spelling more). Its adorable yet dignified.
Honestly, [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Ann[/name] would be one of my least favourite combos I’ve encountered. I’m no fan of [name]Agatha[/name], personally. I don’t see any nice nicknames I’d like either.
I personally would definitely not want to be named [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Ann[/name], [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is a much better idea. [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name] would be better.
I love the nickname [name]Aggie[/name]. It’s nothing like my real name but somehow it was my nickname as a kid - it was a fun name to say and it sounded really cute when said by a little kid.
This isn’t necessarily a negative, but [name]Agatha[/name] [name]Ann[/name] reminds me of Raggedy [name]Ann[/name]!
Beautiful! I love it but my daughter is [name]Agnes[/name] and so I do like these classical names. We found [name]Agnes[/name] has had a very good reception as a name, everyone can spell it and say it (a priority for us as we have alot of Irish names in the family) but we’ve not met any other baby [name]Agnes[/name]’. People of my mother’s generation find it an ‘old lady’ name as they remember the pre WWI [name]Agnes[/name]’ but it seems pretty fresh to the post-boomers on down and I think [name]Agatha[/name] would be the same. [name]How[/name] about [name]Thea[/name] as a nn?
Thank you all for your replies! I’ve really enjoyed reading them and must say, my confidence in the name [name]Agatha[/name] has been greatly boosted Titch, it was great to hear your story of your [name]Agatha[/name]. I’m so glad your pick has been received well.
I like the suggestion of spelling [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name], and also adding an E to [name]Anne[/name]. I will be exploring variations on [name]Anne[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] and also thinking of fresher middle name options.
I love [name]Agatha[/name]! Then again, I love a lot of old names that people of this younger generation cant even fathom liking.
[name]Agatha[/name] is great! I really don’t care for [name]Ann/name or [name]Elizabeth[/name], though.
