Aiofe?

I have fallen in love with this name! I love how it sounds, how it looks, and the fact that it’s so very Irish, as my last name is. But would it be too much to give this to a little American girl, and would she forever be correcting the pronunciation (never mind the spelling…we have to spell our last name out all the time!)? What would work with it as a middle name?

ETA: sorry for the misspelling…fast fingers and autocorrect somehow missed Aoife, imagine that!

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] this name. I am thinking about using it for my daughter.

I love:
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Darlene[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Marilynn[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Francine[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f]

how are you pronouncing it? I have never heard of it so I am intrigued

ETA: Nevermind saw the pronounciation on NB It is lovely! I will try and think of some middle names in a bit!

It would work as a middle name.

I hadn’t heard of that name, but I do find it lovely. However, I had to look at the NB pronunciation to figure it out, and it baffled DH. I live in the Northeastern United States. If I saw that name, or heard it, I could learn it. It would take my DH a few corrections fwiw.

I love this name  Go for it!

If you absolutely love it then use it but she will definitely be having to correct both spelling and pronunciation. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I know the pronunciation of this name I still go to say “Offe” or “Eye-offe-E”, and I only know the pronunciation because of namberry haha. When paired with a unfamiliar last name this name will be very tricky a lot of the time. Some suggestions are: [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Avia[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or [name_f]Effie[/name_f], or maybe [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] could be a middle name paired with a less confusing first name. In the end it is up to you so Best of [name_m]Luck[/name_m]

It’s usable only if you are ok with constant spelling and pronunciation corrections. Almost no one will get it right the first try. That said I know people named [name_f]Siobhan[/name_f] and Bebhinn and although there is some confusion with their names they get by just fine. If you’ve got the heritage to back it up and don’t mind explaining it I think you’re ok. If you’re worried about the hassle I’d just use it as a middle.

[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] is totally usable. Americans aren’t always as dumb as we think.

I think it’s really pretty, but she would constantly be telling people how to pronounce & spell her name! I could just see her in school on the first day and the teacher doing attendance - “Ay-oo-fee?”

But it is a very nice name!

I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and actually know of a friend of a friend named [name_f]Aoife[/name_f]-[name_f]Brigid[/name_f]. I think it’s absolutely beautiful, and I think it could work, but you’d have to be prepared to correct people once or twice from time to time.

PS: my favourite part of [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] is the meaning by far. “beautiful radiance/beautiful radiant one”, so nice!

I think it is absolutely lovely and charming. Pronunciation and spelling difficulty is inevitable, so you’ll have to weigh the pros and cons of that. I would suggest coming up with a cute, simple nickname just in case your daughter ends up having too much trouble with it. But still, I say go for it!

This name is soooo on my top 5 list right now. I’m just having to keep my hubby from seeing the spelling until the sound gets familiar for him lol
It’s on my list with [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] and [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f]. Middle names will be Rhue [name_f]Amethyst[/name_f].

I love it. I don’t think pronunciation will be a massive issue - most people probably won’t know offhand (I did, but only because I’m a name geek) but they’ll get it once they’ve heard it. It’s a short name and sounds a lot like the familiar [name_f]Eva[/name_f], so easy to remember.

I think it is absolutely beautiful, honestly. I like [name_f]Eva[/name_f], but [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] is superior in my eyes, with the soft f sound giving it a soft and sinuous quality. However, I think the average person outside of [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] will not be familiar with the pronunciation and I doubt anybody would be able to arrive at it correctly just on a guess. My own name is often mispronounced and I have never minded, but [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] is probably more difficult than my name, and I can imagine that after a while it could be really troublesome.

If I had relations in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] and was really one-hundred-percent-head-over-heels-in-love with the name, then I wouldn’t let that stop me from using it, but it’s something to think about.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] love love [name_f]Aoife[/name_f]. Unusual and has such a gorgeous meaning. There would definitely be some pronunciation/spelling issues at first but [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] is so original it would probably stick in your mind after being told it just once.

[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]

I am going to go for it! I am currently favoring [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] [name_f]Roisin[/name_f]. I love that [name_f]Roisin[/name_f] is “little rose”, so if she’s having difficulty with the strongly Irish quality of her name, she could go by the nn [name_f]Rosy[/name_f] and be all set! Thanks!

I have been thinking about this name ever since I saw this post I just want to encourage you a 2nd time to go for it! It is so gorgeous and the meaning… SWOON. I just love it! I honestly believe that you will correct people, proabably a lot but only once. Once people know how to say/spell it, they wiill remember. Good luck!

ah we posted at the same time!

GORGEOUS NAME! I think [name_f]Rosy[/name_f] is an adorable nickname! Congrats on your beautiful name, your daughter will be happy to have it!

Yay! Much like bluecurry, I have thought more about this name since I initially read your post, and I really really am growing to love it. I honestly had not heard of it before. I am glad you are going with it, it is wonderful. Grats!
