after coming across [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïs (a-lay-eese) and repeating it to myself i really do like it but in a dominant english speaking country (aus to be specific) will it 1) turn into [name_f]Alice[/name_f]? and 2) sound more like at last?
added: any other thoughts or combos are welcomed!!
I think it might get misheard as [name_f]Alice[/name_f], just because that’s what people might be expecting to hear but that could be corrected. I thought it would be pronounced like [name_f]Anais[/name_f] with an L which I guess does sound a bit like at last, but now I know, I’ll say it properly.
I don’t think it’d get mistaken as [name_f]Alice[/name_f] too often, but I’d assume it was pronounced like [name_f]Anais[/name_f], so ah-lah-ees instead of ah-lay-ees. I like the sound though! I’d pick a more familiar and classic middle name, something like [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïs [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïs [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] etc
Hmm, I actually don’t think it sounds that close to [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. If it still bothers you, how about [name_f]Athena[/name_f]ïs, [name_f]Ana[/name_f]ïs or [name_f]Alouette[/name_f]?
This is one of my favorite names although a GP…when I originally came across the name decades ago I pronounced it in my head as [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-[name_m]LAY[/name_m]-iss. It wasn’t until years later that I ran across information that indicated it’s actually pronounced [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-la-EESS. IIRC it’s the Provençal version of [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
It’s hard for me to mentally reproduce an Australian accent (I’m in the US), so I’m not sure if [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïs will sound like At Last…but I’m all for you using it!
