I’ve had this feeling for a while now that the name [name]Alessia[/name] would be too much of a hassle to have in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name], as people who be constantly mistaking it for [name]Alyssa[/name], or even [name]Alexa[/name]/[name]Alexia[/name].
[name]Alessa[/name] has been nixed off my list for that reason already, and [name]Alessia[/name] seems to be heading that route as well.
[name]How[/name] do you say it? Because if you say it the Italian way (ah-[name]LAY[/name]-see-ah, from what I understand), I don’t think it’s liable to be confused with [name]Alyssa[/name] at all! I love [name]Alessia[/name]. I think the nn [name]Lacey[/name] for it is too cute, too. I would definitely keep it!
I love the name [name]Alessia[/name] - and think I would be pronouncing it quite similarly to you [name]Al[/name]-less-ee-ah. Very pretty I can understand why you’d be worried it might be mistaken for [name]Alyssa[/name] but think that would be more likely with [name]Alessa[/name] - a shame because that’s lovely too. Sometimes I wish I’d chosen something like [name]Alessia[/name] for our eldest instead of [name]Alyssa[/name] BUT then we live in the UK where [name]Alyssa[/name] is relatively unknown which I liked…and I suspect that [name]Alessia[/name] would also get mispronounced here as [name]Alicia[/name] (which we pronounce [name]Al[/name]-liss-see-ah)
I live in the northeast and have friends with a 5-yr-old named [name]Alessio[/name]–he isn’t having any problems…I’d go with [name]Alessia[/name]–it’s great.
[i]The correct Italian way is pronunciation is uh-less-ee-uh. I think that [name]Alessia[/name] and [name]Alyssa[/name] are both lovely! I think that the -ia ending of [name]Alessia[/name] will prevent it getting pronounced the same as [name]Alyssa[/name], but it may be pronounced uh-liss-ee-uh.
On a side note: Wow, it’s weird to think that over in the UK [name]Alicia[/name] is pronounced al-liss-see-ah where, here in Australia it’s pronounced uh-leesh-uh![/i]
I don’t think many people will mix up [name]Alyssa[/name]/[name]Alessia[/name] - there’s the y/e middles, and of course the a/ia endings. Most people will probably say it a-less-ee-ah, though. [name]Alessa[/name] is more likely to be mixed up; it lacks the distinctive ‘ia’ ending
