Alexa: Yes or No?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries! For some reason [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] has resurfaced in my head, and I’ve been swooning of the idea of a little girl name [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] with the nn [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] or [name_u]Alexi[/name_u], but obviously with Amazon [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] being popular (especially in America), and the fact thats a bit outdated (which of course isn’t bad at all - it’s just a thing that I think about since I was born 2000s). But I just want to get your berries opinions on this. TIA!

I would say no on [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] due to the product unfortunately :frowning:

Names that can have [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] / [name_u]Alexi[/name_u] as a nn:

[name_u]Alexis[/name_u]
[name_f]Alexia[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandrine[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lexine[/name_f]
[name_u]Lexington[/name_u]

@winterlyricalfox that’s what I figured which is a shame. But I do like the suggestion of [name_f]Alexia[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandrine[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Alessia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lexine[/name_f], thank you!

No I don’t think it works well now. I do like [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]!

I do like the sound of [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] - zippy, warm and charming - and I have met a few Alexas who’ve worn it well. Not sure I’d use it though, because of the product.

I’d like to think that Amazon won’t be a long term feature in our lives but as it stands [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] is kind of dominated by that association :smiling_face_with_tear:

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite Alexa-adjacent name is [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]

It’s such a shame that the product is such a strong association isn’t it? I reeeeeally like the name. If I was going to be naming someone several years into the future, I’d keep [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] on my list in hopes that the product became a thing of the past and the association faded. I couldn’t use it right now. Perhaps a longer name with [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] as a nn would be doable, e.g. [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f] etc.

Gosh I feel like [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] has been ruined by Amazon! Honestly when I read this post I even responded in my head saying that monotone voice to get Amazon [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] to respond.

I think [name_f]Alessia[/name_f] could be a pretty alternative!

Was one of my favourites as a kid. I don’t think it would be good to burden a child with it these days because of Amazon [name_f]Alexa[/name_f]. The real problematic issue underlying this is companies using real world given names for such products, (the tendency for it to be female names in a ‘servant’ role is perhaps another conversation) This needs fought against as it has real world consequences for bearers of those names. But while this is the case I wouldn’t want to saddle my child with it.

I don’t live in [name_u]America[/name_u] so I don’t hear people saying things like “Alexa, turn on the light” except for when I watch Youtube videos, but if you live in [name_u]America[/name_u], it might make people think too much of the Amazon type thing.

[name_u]Alexi[/name_u] is also really nice though! I would go with that.

I honestly don’t think the product association is a big issue, but maybe that’s because I’m not American. I know three Alexa’s, two where I live and one in [name_f]Canada[/name_f].

I love Alexa too - and Alexa Cheung really helps with the positive associations - but I probably wouldn’t use, unless it was my genuine first pick, just to spare the kid any hassle including from people in her parents’ generation.

I like Alexie too (my friend’s kid’s name) and Alessia, and don’t mind Alexis. Not keen on Alexia - you should def check out it’s medical meaning…

I wouldn’t use it, due to the inevitable jokes. I think it would be ok as a nn for [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandrine[/name_f] etc

I think it’s fine to use, it’s a well known name. I didn’t even think of Amazon.

Unfortunately it is strongly associated with the ridiculous product these days, but maybe not so much that it couldn’t be used. Somehow I think it would be less associated if the baby named [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] had older siblings, so her name wouldn’t be stand alone but would be one of multiples. I also think if you call her by her first and middle name together or almost exclusively use a nickname it would help differentiate from the product. There are also a lot of very similar names that might be a better option if you’re already concerned about this.
