[name_u]Baby[/name_u] boy is due one month from today, and we still don’t have a name.
My husband’s family has an informal tradition of using A names for boys. My mother’s name is [name_f]Sandra[/name_f]. I just recently had the idea of naming our son [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and calling him [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] as a nickname (probably just during the 5 and under stage). [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] would be cute on a little boy these days? His big sister goes by [name_f]Rosie[/name_f].
I just thought of this name, so I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. Looking for opinions. FWIW, I definitely think of [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] as being a gender neutral name (I think of [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] on The OC and the baseball player). And I think it could be cute on a little toddler boy playing on the beach (he’s going to be a [name_u]July[/name_u]/[name_u]August[/name_u] birthday). At the same time I don’t know if it’s too dated, or too Grease.
Thanks!
Sandy is more feminine than masculine to me. I have never heard it on a boy, or even thought of using it on a boy. I have heard of Alexander nn Sand and Alexander nn Sander, though. I like Sander better than Sandy, but if you like Sandy for your little boy, I say go ahead and use it.
(I didn’t even think of the Sandy on Grease until I read your question about it.)
It may be all girl but I don’t mind. The fact it honors grandma is really important, special and meaningful. For what it’s worth, my [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] goes by [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] and no one’s mentioned a thing (they wouldn’t dare to anyway
)
I love it!
I knew a boy named [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] when I was younger, he wore it really well and I always thought it was handsome and strong.
The honour aspect makes it even better!
I love it: I’m like you, it’s mostly [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] to me. Overall, of course, I do know more women called [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] than men, but I don’t think anyone would give you grief about the choice. It’s a really sweet way to honor your mom.
Another idea would be taking a foreign version of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], such as [name_m]Alessandro[/name_m]. You could still use [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] as a nickname, but if you decide it’s too “girly” after all, it will still more obviously honor your mom and start with an A. But fwiw, I think [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] can work for a boy. If [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] can work, [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] can too!
Though [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] is all girl to me, it definitely works for a boy. I do prefer [name_u]Sander[/name_u], [name_u]Lex[/name_u], and [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] over [name_u]Sandy[/name_u]. [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is way too common of a nickname for me.
Thanks everyone!
I think [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is strong and handsome, but I like that [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] is underused compared to other nicknames, like [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_m]Zander[/name_m], etc.
I’ve been crushing on [name_u]Robin[/name_u] for a boy lately, so maybe I just have a thing for bringing neutral names back onto the boy side
[name_u]Robin[/name_u] is adorable, I love it for both boys and girls!
[name_u]Robin[/name_u] is so wonderful and underused.
My only hesitation with [name_u]Robin[/name_u] is DD and I both have [name_f]Ro[/name_f]- names, so I’m afraid of making too much of a pattern. Plus family members already constantly mix up our names.
