Alexander or Daniel?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] folks,

These two names have caught my attention lately; with [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is the most inevitable nn. However, I worry [name_u]Alex[/name_u] may one day be feminine-sounding.

Whereas with [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], nns include [name_u]Danny[/name_u] and [name_m]Dan[/name_m]. I love [name_u]Danny[/name_u] as a nn (“Oh [name_u]Danny[/name_u] Boooooy”), but dislike [name_m]Dan[/name_m].

What are your thoughts?

My partner is [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] and he gets [name_u]Danny[/name_u], my son is [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and he gets [name_u]Alex[/name_u]/ally. I don’t think [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is girlie at all.

I prefer [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and know some [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]’s who go exclusively by [name_m]Zander[/name_m], [name_m]Alec[/name_m] and [name_u]Ali[/name_u] rather than [name_u]Alex[/name_u]

Alexander / [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is definitely not feminine/girly sounding! I like both names but I prefer [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].

I really like both names and both names are in my family
We have an [name_m]Al[/name_m] whose daughter’s name is [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ally[/name_f] and her sons name is [name_m]Alexzander[/name_m] nn Z, [name_m]Zander[/name_m] , [name_u]Alex[/name_u]

We also have a [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] ( [name_u]Danny[/name_u] or if you ask him [name_m]Dan[/name_m] the [name_m]Man[/name_m]) .
I also have a cousin who is [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] ([name_f]Dee[/name_f]) and she is married to a [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] who is exclusively [name_m]Dan[/name_m]

My favourite nickname for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] . I don’t think [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is too feminine. It’s one of those names I see as exclusively unisex

I vote for [name_u]Alex[/name_u]. I don’t think [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is feminine sounding. And there are other nickname choices. I especially like [name_m]Xander[/name_m].

I know both Alexanders and [name_m]Daniels[/name_m] that go by their full names all the time. I prefer [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] of the two.

I prefer [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], but [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is also a great choice. I think [name_u]Alex[/name_u] will always be perfectly unisex. Fwiw, I know plenty of boys called [name_u]Alex[/name_u] and no girls, so I doubt it will ever feel distinctly feminine.

Alex is firmly gender-neutral for me! Not girly at all. None of the female [name_u]Alex[/name_u]’s I’ve known have been girly girls so perhaps that’s why.

I think if you don’t like [name_m]Dan[/name_m], you should pass on [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]. I grew up with a [name_u]Danny[/name_u] who only goes by [name_m]Dan[/name_m] now. I think he feels it’s just more mature, though he’ll always be [name_u]Danny[/name_u] to me. But I could kind of see this turning into a future fight with your kid if he wants to go by [name_m]Dan[/name_m] and you keep calling him [name_u]Danny[/name_u].

For the record, I also find [name_u]Danny[/name_u] ([name_u]Dani[/name_u]) more feminine sounding than [name_u]Alex[/name_u] - again perhap it’s because I know a lot of [name_f]Danielle[/name_f]’s who have more feminine personalities.

Hi there.

I like both names. I feel like you’d be more likely to get [name_u]Alex[/name_u] than [name_m]Dan[/name_m] or [name_u]Danny[/name_u], just because [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is so long. I don’t think that it’s too feminine at all though. But I also love the nns [name_m]Ace[/name_m] & [name_m]Dex[/name_m]. And I agree w/you that [name_m]Dan[/name_m] is kind of meh. Not sure why? [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] is beautiful! I do know a grown up [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] who has never gotten [name_m]Dan[/name_m] or [name_u]Danny[/name_u] to my knowledge. It can be done, most likey.

Hope this helps.

Alexander is so strong and handsome! Such a wonderful classic. I don’t see Alex as feminine whatsoever, even though there are plenty of girls/women who are named/go by Alex. I do think a nickname for Alexander is probably unavoidable, but you can always establish a different nickname before people start calling him Alex if you don’t like it. Daniel feels very dated to me and I’m not personally a fan of the sound. I know a middle-aged Danny and I don’t believe he gets called Dan. I also know middle-aged Daniel’s who still go exclusively by Daniel.

I love [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]; it has a soft, classic sound! [name_u]Danny[/name_u] is a sweet nickname.

Alexander is nice as well (and can have all kinds of nicknames), but [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] is my favorite.

Daniel has more depth and is actually fairly unique now. I don’t hear it often anymore.

I really love [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. It still sounds strong and interesting to me, no matter how many times I hear it. Tons of nickname potential beyond [name_u]Alex[/name_u] too. [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] is a nice choice too though, and perhaps a little more unexpected now.

Both are so handsome! I like [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] for all the unusual nicknames ([name_m]Alexei[/name_m], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], [name_m]Skandar[/name_m], [name_m]Xander[/name_m], even [name_m]Zane[/name_m] or [name_u]Allie[/name_u]), but I’m not a huge [name_u]Alex[/name_u] fan. I wouldn’t worry about [name_u]Alex[/name_u] sounding feminine; I don’t think [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] nn [name_u]Alex[/name_u] will ever go out of style.

Daniel I ADORE. He’s a family name and I would never not be happy to meet a little [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]. I think [name_u]Danny[/name_u]’s cute, and dislike [name_m]Dan[/name_m] myself, but would just use [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] if I had a little one with the name. [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]’s my favorite, just slightly, so he gets my vote. Good luck!

I think I would go for [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], I really like [name_u]Danny[/name_u] but im not a fan of [name_m]Dan[/name_m].
I dont think [name_u]Alex[/name_u] sounds feminine at all, but I dont really like the sound of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (although I do love the nn [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]!)

I don’t think [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is girly at all, it’s firmly unisex but is so established it won’t swing one way or the other. I’d say, if anything, it’s slightly more boy-associated as some Alexandras are being called [name_f]Ally[/name_f], [name_u]Lexie[/name_u], etc rather than [name_u]Alex[/name_u] as a nickname whereas [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (which is on my list, fwiw) tends to just get [name_u]Alex[/name_u].

Daniel also has a unisex nickname (albeit more common as [name_u]Dani[/name_u] for girls) and I’d say both are strong, classic names you can’t really go wrong with. [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] gets my vote out of the two, though
