Thoughts on [name]Alexander[/name]? It’s very common, but I love it and I have personal connections to this name that make me love it more. The only doubt I have is that it’s a little anti-climatic compared to some of the other names on my list.
What nickname would you use? Any slightly more unusual middle name ideas?
I love [name]Alexander[/name]. It’s got great history, a sort of royal sound, but it’s familiar. It’s got everything a name should have. I have the middle names [name]Dante[/name] and [name]Griffin[/name] for my [name]Alexander[/name] combo. For nicknames, I’m going to use [name]Xander[/name], but I also like [name]Lex[/name]. There’s also all these nicknames: [name]Al[/name], [name]Alec[/name], [name]Alessio[/name], [name]Alex[/name], [name]Alexi[/name], [name]Lex[/name], [name]Sander[/name], San, [name]Sandy[/name], [name]Sasha[/name], X, [name]Xan[/name], [name]Xander[/name], [name]Anders[/name], Exder, [name]Alan[/name], [name]Andy[/name], [name]Ali[/name], [name]Sacha[/name], and this site has great suggestions for nicknames.
I also love [name]Dorian[/name] from your list (it was on mine too) and [name]Dorian[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] would be the perfect name if you decide against [name]Alexander[/name] as a first name.
I like [name]Alexander[/name], as it’s my first name choice. It’s definitely anti-climatic compared to many names and if you’re looking for something unique or something that people will comment on, [name]Alexander[/name] is not the way to go.
Dantea pretty much summed up the nn choices. My favorite however would be [name]Anders[/name] for something more “different”.
From your list, [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Asa[/name], [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Elias[/name], [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Ronan[/name], and [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Soren[/name] stand out.
On a completely unrelated note, I followed your listography page
I love [name]Alexander[/name], so many great connotations ([name]Alexander[/name] the Great) It’s so classic. [name]Xander[/name] would be a really cool nickname!
[name]Alexander[/name] is VERY common. My son is in second grade and has always had at least 2 Alexanders in his class. [name]Alex[/name] is the common nickname so I would go with [name]Xander[/name]. It is a great name, just very popular!
This is one that we considered–and then rejected–due to what my husband calls its “bland” vibe. There’s nothing wrong with [name]Alexander[/name], but it just feels somehow generic.
As far as nns go, [name]Alex[/name] and [name]Xan[/name] are the only ones I really like.
[name]Alexander[/name] has been a favourite of mine and DH’s too and we are considering it in the middle name position as it struck us as too popular for a first name. That said, in my humble opinion NOTHING trumps a name you both truly love - not popularity, not having a friend with the same name, not other people thinking it’s weird/old-fashioned/too modern etc. Finding a name two people love and agree on is a minor miracle!
I probably wouldn’t shorten the name but if I did I’d choose [name]Sacha[/name] or [name]Lex[/name].
I like [name]Alexander[/name]. It’s great because it’s so versatile and classic. Besides, the nns are so versatile (and unique) that it makes up for the semi-blandness of [name]Alexander[/name] ([name]Alec[/name], [name]Sandy[/name], [name]Sasha[/name], [name]Al[/name], [name]Lex[/name], [name]Alexei[/name] (just heard this recently and I love it!), [name]Andy[/name], [name]Xander[/name], Skandar, [name]Zane[/name], [name]Alejo[/name]…).
[name]Alexander[/name] is just an awesome name.
That’s why it’s popular.
Personally, I say go for a cool NN like [name]Xander[/name]. I have even heard an [name]Alexander[/name] nn [name]Axel[/name]. I taught a Russian [name]Alexander[/name] nn [name]Sasha[/name]. Not so keen on the nn [name]Lex[/name]- “[name]Lex[/name] [name]Luther[/name]” springs to my mind. I also know a young man named [name]Alexander[/name] nn [name]Alec[/name].
If you like the nn [name]Alex[/name] then just use it. I mean really, does it matter if there is another [name]Alex[/name] in his class? Sometimes having a popular name is like a ticket to being accepted by peers.
If it makes your heart happy then use it.
Exactly-- [name]Alexander[/name] is like [name]Sophia[/name]. An excellent, storied, regal, pleasant name. It’s only 'crime it’s that too many people caught on to it’s glory and gave it to their sons. On a site like nameberry you can feel pressure to choose something not heard every day, which is really a very poor measure of the strength of the name.
I adore the nn [name]Lex[/name], but I’m not really head over heels about [name]Alexander[/name]. I prefer the female version [name]Alexandra[/name], but to be honest I probably wouldn’t ever actually end up using that either. It is still a great name though, I’ve just known way too many [name]Alex[/name]'s.
I have quite a few variations of [name]Alexander[/name] on my husband’s side of the family so it’s off the list. I would use nn [name]Allie[/name] which I love!
I really like [name]Alexander[/name]. I know a family who has a senior and junior [name]Alexander[/name]. Dad goes by [name]Alex[/name] and his son goes by [name]Xan[/name] (pro. [name]Zan[/name]) which kind of modernizes it.
