I have always loved the name [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] but have never really liked any of the more common names you can get that nickname from such as [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] or [name_m]Alfonso[/name_m] etc. [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is a family name and I had an epiphany that it is somewhat close to [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] so I was wondering if that would work. Is it too much of a stretch? I don’t like using names that sound like nicknames as their actual first name so I would never just name my child [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]. If someone has any other suggestions on names that you can get [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] from I’d appreciate it!
I think this may go against other [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions but I honestly think it could work. It’s not immediately intuitive and it is a bit of a stretch, but I believe it would catch on if it was being used enough by others. Plus, if you just wanted to use it as a family nickname and others to call him [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], then it’s definitely fine! If you wanted EVERYONE to call him [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], even though you don’t like nickname names, you’d probably have to use it or find a more intuitive full name unfortunately.
It might work if you love [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] too. Otherwise you might as well just look for any name starting with [name_m]Al[/name_m]- since it would make more sense than [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] for example.
I love [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] and I like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] great grandfather was [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and he went by [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], my grandfather [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Jr[/name_m]. went by [name_m]John[/name_m]. I just had the sudden thought that [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] might work and I would be able to use [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] as a nn to distinguish him from his ancestors. I like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and I even like the nns that more traditionally come with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] such as [name_m]Art[/name_m] or [name_m]Artie[/name_m], I just really love [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] so was excited when I had the thought that this might work.
It’s not immediately intuitve but I think it could work
It might work but honestly I’d find it a bit odd.
What kind of nickname do you mean? Would you want everyone to call him [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]? Or would it just be a pet name you used at home?
If it’s the former, I would find it a bit strange, but I think it would work if you called him [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] all the time and introduced him to people as [name_u]Alfie[/name_u].
I agree.
It’s too much of a stretch for me, honestly, since they only share the A. If more shared sounds were there, I might be ok with it, but [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] don’t really share sounds with one another either.
Personally I’d think it was a little strange because aside from their “A” I don’t feel a connection between the names. I love [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], though! How do you feel about [name_m]Artie[/name_m] as a nickname?
Alfonse/Alfonzo are the only alternatives to [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] that I can think of, or maybe [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] or [name_m]Alef[/name_m]?
I guess it would make a little more sense to me if his name was something like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] or [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Florian[/name_u].
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Florian[/name_u] nn [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] would be very sweet.
It’s too much of a stretch, I think, because it is such an established nickname for names like [name_m]Alfred[/name_m].
I think people would assume his name is [name_m]Alfred[/name_m]. If you don’t mind that, you could use it, even if the connection to [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] isn’t intuitive.
I agree it’d probably be useable at home but it’s not very intuitive to the outside world. Maybe you could find a happy medium? The name [name_u]Archer[/name_u] would be a fresh sounding honor name for [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and the nn [name_m]Archie[/name_m] is quite similar to [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]!!
Another long form for [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] could maybe be [name_m]Rafael[/name_m]?
I think if you’re in the US it would work although it’s not intuitive, it’s very sweet. If you’re in the UK i don’t think it will work because [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are both super common here x
I think it works! I like the suggestion of incorporating some of the sounds with the middle name!
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Friedrich[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Florentine[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Fallon[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Faraday[/name_m]
Poppy is a NN for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is a NN for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is a NN for [name_m]Johnathan[/name_m]. [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]’s totally usable.
I seem to be in the minority here but I don’t think so, sorry.
I’m really sorry but I don’t think it works, people won’t automatically derive that nickname from [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] because there’s no L, no F and even the first sound in both names is completely different (Ar…[name_m]Al[/name_m])… However, [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] works as a standalone name and I really don’t think you need to find a longer version of it to make it work if you’ve always loved it. I absolutely love the name [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], it’s on my list too, and I totally embrace its adorable nicknames, [name_m]Artie[/name_m] and [name_m]Art[/name_m]. I just LOVE [name_m]Artie[/name_m]
Same, sorry! The absolute only similarity is that they start with an A. I think any “[name_m]Al[/name_m]-” name followed by a middle with an “F” anywhere in it could work just fine:
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Florin[/name_m]
[name_u]Alden[/name_u] [name_m]Reef[/name_m]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m] [name_u]Francis[/name_u]
Or even something like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Leif[/name_m] makes it a little bit more acceptable, but if I heard someone I knew was using [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and planning to use the nn [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] I would be very confused, sorry!
