So I love the name [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name] but wanted something more ‘formal’ as a full first name.
I like both [name]Alfred[/name] and [name]Frederick[/name].
[name]Alfred[/name] can also have [name]Alfie[/name], which I like.
And [name]Frederick[/name] can also have [name]Ricky[/name], which isn’t too bad.
I think I’m leaning more towards [name]Alfred[/name] but don’t like the popularity it has at the moment. I know lots of little Alfies and big Alfies, but only know 1 [name]Frederick[/name].
If I’m not mistaken, isn’t the name “[name]Alfie[/name]” on its own more popular in the UK than [name]Alfred[/name]? So if you used [name]Alfred[/name] and the nn [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name], I think he would stand apart from the little and big Alfies you know.
I love [name]Frederick[/name] and [name]Alfred[/name], and I think either would be cute with the nn [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name]. Since you’re leaning more toward [name]Alfred[/name], I think you should go with it!
dovah - yes, [name]Alfie[/name] is very popular in the UK. [name]Even[/name] though I’d call him [name]Freddie[/name] I’m sure other people might call him [name]Alfie[/name]. Oh well, I really do like the name Thanks for your help!
ohiom - sorry, [name]Fritz[/name] just reminds me of [name]Josef[/name] Fritzl too much!! Horrible connotations.
uniquenamelover - I agree, [name]Alfred[/name] is a very handsome name Thank you
I adore [name]Freddie[/name], and like you would want a more formal first, but I’m still yet to find a -fred- name I actually like. If I had to choose, I’d go for [name]Frederick[/name] because I really dislike [name]Alfie[/name], and I heard it far too much nowadays. Though I dislike [name]Ricky[/name] too, it’s not as overused and I think [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name] is definitely more more common nickname there, whereas with [name]Alfred[/name] ‘[name]Alfie[/name]’ would be the natural choice for most.
I like both names but I prefer [name]Alfred[/name] myself. It’s an Old English name and I like the connection with [name]King[/name] [name]Alfred[/name] the Great as well as poet [name]Lord[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]. Since you live in the UK, it would be a subtle way to honour your heritage. [name]Frederick[/name] is more [name]German[/name] to me with its own royal association ([name]Frederick[/name] the Great of Prussia). I think if you gave [name]Alfred[/name] the nn [name]Freddie[/name] then people would follow your lead.
I personally prefer the look and sound of [name]Frederick[/name], but in regards to the nn [name]Freddie[/name] you really can’t go wrong with either! =]
[name]Frederick[/name]. [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Douglass[/name] and his Narrative of the Life…of an American Slave was very inspiring. You’d also have two nickname options that you’ve mentioned you like ([name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name] and [name]Ricky[/name]).
With [name]Alfred[/name], you might have to be okay with [name]Alf[/name] as a nickname.
[name]Alfred[/name] feels more down-to-earth. [name]Alfred[/name] is more [name]Gene[/name] [name]Kelly[/name], and [name]Frederick[/name] is more [name]Fred[/name] Astaire.
I like both. I think [name]Mischa[/name] makes a good point about their cultural origins- so I guess I might go with [name]Alfred[/name].
I prefer [name]Frederick[/name] too. It’s still on our short list, but unlike you, I really dislike [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name], which is why I can’t commit to it.
I think [name]Alfred[/name] is nice too, but my first choice would personally be [name]Frederick[/name]!
