[name_m]Just[/name_m] thinking about things and I realised I have a few questions about the combination [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] - this will almost certainly be the first name of our first girl, especially if she is also our first child.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - because we both really like the name and there are a few references to TV shows and books that both of us like. Also there’s a ‘A name for the first child’ theme that my family have going which I don’t need to keep at all but I’d quite like to.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - because it we my mother’s middle name and it is massively important to me that I honour her.
So, questions:
Would she automatically be AJ (which I hate)? S/O would just call her [name_f]Alice[/name_f], I would probably use [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] occasionally.
Is it super boring? A few people I was just discussing names with casually a couple of days ago brought up that they wouldn’t want to give their kids boring names and listed [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] on that list (not knowing it’s my top pick)
Generally how do you feel about [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] nn [name_f]Alsie[/name_f]?
(In a perfect world I would have twin girls, [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], so that I could use an A name for the first child and use the pairing [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] which is my all time favourite).
I don’t think she will become AJ if you don’t call her that, family doesn’t call her that. At least, in her first years. In school, I can’t promise anything but if she doesn’t like AJ, she can only say “I’m just [name_f]Alice[/name_f]” or “Call me [name_f]Alsie[/name_f]”.
It’s not a unique name, don’t expect that. It’s popular, it’s common, for some people it might be boring but it’s a classic. Classics are like that. Common, popular and sometimes, boring. It’s not negative, it’s something you have to be aware of to be sure you are taking the right decision.
I love the ideal world where you have twins and they are [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. That’s a gorgeous twin set. But, if you don’t have twins and it’s a girl, are you willing to sacrifice your precious combo of [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] to use [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as [name_f]Alice[/name_f]'s middle name? Maybe, you could find an alternative. Maybe, it might be [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] for you. I don’t know what your mom’s first name is, but you can find an alternative to it and use it as [name_f]Alice[/name_f]'s middle name.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] everything written in this (which won’t lie, was confusing) helps. Good luck!
I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is beautiful. A bit plain, but certainly not boring. And an excellent combo. I would like to meet one.
I love it! And no, I don’t think initial nickname is intuitive at all. Some people [name_f]MAY[/name_f] end up calling her that, especially if there are others with same name in the class (speaking from personal experience here) but not everyone automatically will. There’s a huge chance she won’t be called AJ at all.
It’s a classic. Not a boring name, imo. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] works just fine… but also not intuitive. I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is short enough it doesn’t need a nickname, but if you keep calling her [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] I guess it can stick.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is lovely! I especially support [name_f]Jane[/name_f] since it has personal significance for you, and of course [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland is such a great classic story.
Regarding your questions:
Would she automatically be AJ (which I hate)?
Nah, I don’t think so. Maybe a friend or two would try making it happen in middle or high school, but I doubt it would stick if no one really uses it. Most people don’t know their friends’ middle names anyway. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, and it definitely shouldn’t be a deal breaker.
Is it super boring?
I see why your friends would say that, but I don’t personally think it’s boring. If it has meaning to you, and you love its sweet simplicity, there’s no reason at all to give it up for the sake of pleasing others. These days so many names are “exciting” or unusual that I think classic names add a nice balance to the mix anyway. Also not a deal breaker in my opinion.
Generally how do you feel about [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] nn [name_f]Alsie[/name_f]?
I think it’s very pretty. It does have a very English vibe to me, probably because [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are both well-loved literary names in [name_f]England[/name_f]. It is a bit conventional, but I would not say boring. It has a very sweet, friendly feeling to it. I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] would be a smart girl, perhaps a bit introverted, but with a quick mind and natural curiosity.
For the record, I adore your twin name [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], because I find [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] to have a similar appeal to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] but with a little more “pep,” so if it were between them I might vote [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] over [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. But [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] would make an absolutely darling twin combo!
I really love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. It’s classic, lovely, and packed with meaning for you. Also, both names are so steeped in literary history, I would never call them boring. If uniqueness is your number 1 priority, this may not be your name, but I hope you do use it! I think a name that means a lot to parents will mean more to a child than a name chosen only for it’s unusualness and shock value.
1. Would she automatically be AJ (which I hate)? S/O would just call her [name_f]Alice[/name_f], I would probably use [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] occasionally.
I might just be slow on the uptake, but it took me an inordinate amount of time to realise that my own combo [name_u]Asa[/name_u] [name_u]Jude[/name_u] could be nicknamed AJ. I honestly don’t think it’s something that would occur to most people. The people who are most likely to be familiar with her middle name are family and close friends, and so long as you don’t start calling her AJ around them, it’s slim that the nickname will happen and catch on.

Everyone’s taste is different, but I don’t think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is boring at all. I think it sounds pretty in a timeless, classic way. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] I feel gets written off by the “plain [name_f]Jane[/name_f]” saying, but it’s not a bad name at all. It’s certainly less overused these days than say, [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Ava[/name_f].
3. Generally how do you feel about [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] nn [name_f]Alsie[/name_f]?
I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is perfectly lovely. The nickname [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] I could take or leave. I don’t think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] really needs a nickname, but I guess for family it would be cute.
I think both of the names in your ideal combo are terrific. Occasionally calling her [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could be very sweet. My real first name is one of the ones in your combos, and honestly, I have always felt that having an understated classic name was kind of liberating. I would have found the need to live up to a more dramatic name kind of stressful.
Would she automatically be AJ (which I hate)? S/O would just call her [name_f]Alice[/name_f], I would probably use [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] occasionally.
No. If someone tried to call her AJ, correct them. If I had an [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] she would be [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

I do not think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is boring at all.
Generally how do you feel about [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] nn [name_f]Alsie[/name_f]?
I love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. Very beautiful, spunky, approachable. [name_f]Alsie[/name_f] is cute. I think there might be some confusion with people thinking her name is [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] (or [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] “[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]”). I personally would not use a nickname but that is a personal choice.
I used to think both of these names were boring and unimaginative because they are frills-free. This was in a time when [name_f]Alice[/name_f] was embellished into [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] sounded old next to [name_f]Jen[/name_f]. But I grew to appreciate them. The trends show that people are still interested in elaborate, A-ending names, so these tailored classics do come across as boring to them. I wouldn’t worry about their unimaginative opinions though if they can’t see the charm, spunk, or appeal of your favorites.
I love both [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and I do think they flow well and sound good together.
I do, however, like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] even more because I think that the -ee- sound in [name_f]Mary[/name_f] adds some liveliness to the name.
Still, you can’t really complain about [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], it’s a darling name.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is lovely. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are also wonderful together.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is lovely. In all honesty, I do find [name_f]Jane[/name_f] boring. However [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is a timeless name and since [name_f]Jane[/name_f] has meaning for you, that makes it all the more special.
I kind of prefer [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], though both are gorgeous. If you love [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] more, I’d use it. [name_m]How[/name_m] important is sticking to the family tradition to you?
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is my absolute favourite, but [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is the top not because it fits the A theme but because [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is definitely my S/O’s favourite (and I do also love the name). And I’d want to use [name_f]Jane[/name_f] for my first daughter just in case I only had one. My mum’s first name was [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], I might do a post asking about suggestions for how to use it without using it (I just don’t like it very much).
I love it! It’s ‘plain’ but in a good way.
In a classic, never out of style but never shocking way.
I don’t think anyone will jump to AJ. But it’s possible [name_m]AL[/name_m] could become a short form. Especially if you stress [name_f]Alsie[/name_f]. I feel like the [name_m]AL[/name_m] sound stands out even more then.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] really doesn’t need a nickname, imo.
