[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all - I posted about [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] earlier but I cannot seem to find the thread anymore…so I’ll repost again!
Thanks to those who have responded to my thread earlier!
So I’m thinking to name my daughter [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] with nickname [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. I actually first thought of [name_f]Mia[/name_f] but since my husband’s last name only contains two letters, so I figured I’d go with a longer name instead.
My criteria of a name would be:
3 syllables
Ends with an A
Can use [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as a nickname
Pretty, Elegant, Classy
[name_f]Michaela[/name_f] seems to fit all of these, and I thought this name was beautiful but I do have some concerns:
People would call her [name_u]Michael[/name_u]-uh
She would have a hard time explaining to people about the spelling of the name
Could you please advise what your opinion is about [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]? I also thought about [name_f]Camilla[/name_f], but thought [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] was more special. Thanks so much!!!
[name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is a gorgeous name! I don’t think you’ll have major issues with mispronunciation. [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] is also very pretty. Some of the following suggestions have the nickname [name_f]Mia[/name_f] but I have added some that don’t.
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
Although I do like some of these names I like [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] the most.
Good luck!
Personally I’m indifferent to [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], very much prefer [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] with [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as a nickname. I’ve been a teacher for 12 years so I’ve had many [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]'s with many different spellings. Everyone knows the name where I live no matter the spelling. I live in the US (north east), if that’s helpful.
For [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as a nickname
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Noemi[/name_f]
[name_f]Milena[/name_f]
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Malia[/name_f]
[name_f]Maria[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (double name)
Another con is that there are so many ways to spell [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] that’ll she’ll forever be spelling it out for people (not quite sure if that’s what you meant in your second point under con). Personally, I like [name_f]Camila[/name_f] better! Here are some other [name_f]Mia[/name_f] options, I’ll try not to repeat any others have said:
I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Micheala[/name_f]. It feels dated circa 1995. She had her hay day when there were tons of [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], [name_f]Kylee[/name_f], [name_f]Kyla[/name_f], and [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]'s. On the positive side, I don’t hear it much anymore. I would rather meet a [name_f]Micheala[/name_f] than yet another [name_f]Ava[/name_f] or [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], or a boys name like [name_u]James[/name_u], or a trendy name like [name_u]Harper[/name_u] or Harlowe. To get to [name_f]Mia[/name_f], I would use [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] is also a beautiful choice. That being said, [name_f]Micheala[/name_f] is a nice name, and may be the name for you.
My first experience with [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] was a girl who pronounced her name Mi-[name_u]SHAY[/name_u]-la, so when I found out it was 1) a “real name” and 2) that the pronunciation is different and there’s ONLY ONE, I was thrown for a loop. That said, I’m almost 25 (she’s around the same age) and I grew up in the middle of nowhere, so the chances of you having a similar issue are slim to none. Still, though, it’s worth mentioning if you’re especially bothered by correcting people.
…Anyway, [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is nice! I do prefer [name_f]Camilla[/name_f], though: it’s so underused and you could also use [name_f]Millie[/name_f] or even [name_u]Cam[/name_u]/[name_f]Cami[/name_f]. Options are good; there’s one there for every personality
Other than [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], I like [name_f]Maria[/name_f] and [name_f]Marina[/name_f] to get to [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. [name_f]Malia[/name_f] and [name_f]Samiya[/name_f] are other options.
I don’t think I have any other name suggestions, because I think if you’ve found the one then why change it? I love the spelling [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], but if you feel it would be too hard for her to explain then maybe try the following options?:
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Mackayla[/name_f]
[name_f]McKayla[/name_f] (not a favourite but an option)
[name_f]Micayla[/name_f]
My name is [name_f]Michaela[/name_f].
Never once (okay except for ONE time) in my 16 years of life has anyone ever spelled my name right. [name_u]Ever[/name_u]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] family friends struggle with spelling my name. A year ago, one lucky barista spelled my name right and I was so grateful.
All the variations I’ve gotten: Micala, [name_f]Mikala[/name_f], Mikeala, [name_f]McKayla[/name_f], [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f], Mickayla, [name_f]Makayla[/name_f], Macala, [name_f]Makala[/name_f], [name_f]Mackayla[/name_f], Michalea, and who could forget, [name_f]Micheala[/name_f].
A woman called me [name_f]Makenna[/name_f] after I told her my name twice.
I tell people “It’s just [name_u]Michael[/name_u] with an A at the end.” And they STILL have no clue how to write my name. It’s infuriating.
I am so sick and tired of my name. I’ve met so many girls named [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] and it ruined my name for me. So now my [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] just feels like a long-for-no-reason form of an already tacky name.
Also, I go almost exclusively by [name_u]Mickey[/name_u].
My mom considered calling me [name_f]Mia[/name_f] when I was younger (we met another young “[name_f]Michaela[/name_f]” nn’d [name_f]Mia[/name_f]) but it never stuck.
Sorry if this feels like a venting post, but I just have a lot of strong feelings about this.
Also, if it helps, I live on the [name_f]East[/name_f] Coast (VA).
I prefer [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] over [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]. That said, I think it is easy to correct the pronunciation of [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] and I don’t see how she would have to explain the spelling of the name.
I love [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]! I think it’s a beautiful name and I prefer it to [name_f]Camilla[/name_f]. Maybe it’s different in [name_u]America[/name_u] but the two that I know in the UK have rarely had problems with spelling or pronunciation. That said, I think all the ‘alternative’ spellings ([name_f]Makayla[/name_f] etc.) are less common here. I think it’s lovely though and [name_f]Mia[/name_f] is a sweet nickname.
I quite like the name [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]! It’s not super popular where I’m from (Australia) and there’s plenty of different ways to spell it - the one above is probably my favourite, followed by [name_f]Mikaela[/name_f]. It seems to fit all of your criteria, and I don’t think there would be pronounciation issues - and if she is going to go by the nn [name_f]Mia[/name_f] most of the time then I don’t think spelling would be a big problem either
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] is also a beautiful name!
I really like [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] and I never ever heard anyone pronounced it [name_u]Michael[/name_u]-uh. [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is also the… “classic” anglo spelling, I think, so I think it won’t be that hard to explain it to people. I say go for it.
I feel like this otherwise nice name has been ruined by the weird creative spellings like [name_f]McKayla[/name_f] etc, and the poster above with the name [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] seems to really dislike it. Some options I think may be better that fit your criteria:
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Camellia[/name_f] (rather than [name_f]Camilla[/name_f], which is too tied to the dowdy Duchess of [name_m]Kent[/name_m] for me to be a fan of)
[name_f]Hermia[/name_f]
[name_f]Euphemia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mietta[/name_f] (so cute!)
[name_f]Romilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Amira[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirella[/name_f]
Permilia
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] (Dracula anyone?)
