  3. What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? (e.g. Alaska Anouk, Madeleine Mae): I guess they’re okay, though I really dislike it when both names end in the same syllable. [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] [name_f]Lucette[/name_f].
  4. Do name meanings matter to you? Not really. Only if they’re really bad.
  5. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys? It really depends. Mostly I’m indifferent, but sometimes I really dislike them. Why anyone would name a girl [name_m]George[/name_m] is beyond me. That being said, I don’t think that surname names have genders. Everyone is always trying to say that [name_u]Lennox[/name_u] is a boy’s name. Like, how? It’s a surname. Literally the most famous [name_u]Lennox[/name_u] in the world ([name_f]Annie[/name_f] [name_u]Lennox[/name_u]) is a woman.
  6. Does name popularity influence your name decisions? Hugely. I don’t want to use anything in the top 500.
  7. How much do other Berry opinions influence your name decisions? Very Little. Not in a mean way, I just tend to be very sure of myself when it comes to the names I like.
  8. What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-English names in an English-speaking country? Do what you want, but I don’t think it would be fair of them to get uppity when people aren’t familiar with the name or mispronounce it.

I’ve posted this before somewhere, but I’ll tell it again! When I was younger, I lived in this property that was owned by the humanitarian organisation that my grandfather started (and my parents worked within this community!) Anyways, it had the biggest and most beautiful garden. Being around 7 years old, I obviously spent all my time in this garden. There were tire swings, flower beds, ‘fairy baths’ (succulents I think) veggie gardens, a tennis court, and these incredibly grand stairs that I would pretend I was some lost princess on. I loved this garden with my whole heart, I still love it even today. When I was little, this garden held so much magic towards me, and I remember hearing about the Garden of [name_u]Eden[/name_u] and being so entranced, and to me, that garden was my little garden of [name_u]Eden[/name_u]. One time I was tending to the flower baths, I took out all the old leaves and left little gifts of violets and honey, and somebody was playing this grand piano in the ballroom. It was quite an old house, so it had these old-vents-that-werent-really-vents-just-holes-in-the-wall, and so sound came out towards the garden pretty easily. Anyways, here I was, tending to my little fairy baths in my very own Garden of [name_u]Eden[/name_u], and the most beautiful piano tune begins to fill the air. [name_f]My[/name_f] world twinkled so brightly in that moment, the smell of violets and honey, the soft keys of the piano, and the magic that covered every inch of that garden. Oops, I rambled.
So, [name_u]Eden[/name_u]! A magical name for that magical part of my childhood.
The purest form of serenity, peace, and joy all wrapped up into one name.

I love doing that! The way I name a lot of my characters is by taking my favorite names that I feel are unusable and just smooshing them together. [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] [name_u]Remington[/name_u] [name_u]Shaw[/name_u] is one of my favorites, he’s the villain in the Dungeons and Dragons game I’m running.

One of my favorite names is Eise. Eise Eisinga was a Frisian astronomer who lived in the 18th century. He was actually a wool dyer but he studied a lot of mathematics and astronomy. Inside his living room he built a planetarium and as of today it’s still functioning!

I used to have [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] on my list, because I really liked the nickname [name_m]Shep[/name_m], and I still think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is a great name for someone else but not for me. Sadly, it didn’t pass the “name test” (introducing the name, calling it across a crowd, etc) and ultimately felt too religious. I played around with [name_m]Shep[/name_m] and eventually came up with Shepley, which isn’t listed on NB but is on other name sites and is an [name_f]English[/name_f] surname meaning “from the sheep’s meadow”. So now I get to keep the nickname [name_m]Shep[/name_m], but I have a full name that passes the tests!

Overall, not that much, but I’d say I do consider them. Most of my favourite names are based on sound and look alone, but if it has a nice meaning that’s a bonus! And unfortunately, as much as I love [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], I’d feel so odd giving it to a child given that I really don’t like horses.

Tough question! I think a lot of word names just shouldn’t have a gender. Who decided that [name_f]Joy[/name_f] is feminine? Boys can be joyous! But unfortunately some names do have expected genders in our society and naming another human isn’t about you, it’s about them and sending them into the world with an identity they can wear proudly. So I’d say, gender-bend names for fun if that makes you happy, but when naming a child, proceed with caution - and maybe give them a traditional middle to fall back on.

I try not to let it influence me too much.

Too much. For the most part if a name I like isn’t well received on here I try not to let it get to me, but it does sometimes.

Go for it! But probably give them a middle name or a nickname thats pronounceable, just for simplicity in everyday life (and Starbucks!).

Unintentionally, yes. I’m aware that a lot of the “vintage” names on my list just aren’t really vintage anymore, they’re popular. It’s disappointing to admit that you’re just not that original!

Oliver: I have loved this name since I was 12. I was in a production of the musical [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]! And I really just fell in love with it. The amount of friends I met there, plus the doors I opened for myself, are incredible. The show isn’t as much of a connection to it anymore for me, but I do love it still. It’s a classic vintage name, which puts it exactly in my style. If only it wasn’t so popular.

  3. What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? (e.g. AlaskaAnouk, Madeleine Mae) I’m not bothered with allitération either way. Sometimes it sounds tacky to me and sometimes it gives the combo that bit of extra sparkle so it really depends on the individual names for me. The only one I have on my list is [name_u]Pascale[/name_u] [name_f]Philou[/name_f] because the sounds are different but they still both start with P. If i had to choose a properly alliterative combo it would probably be [name_f]Mona[/name_f] [name_f]Miette[/name_f]. I feel like it only works for my with consonants.
  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] name meanings matter to you? Not at all. I really am not bothered with the meanings (I’m a linguist so I study them and find etymology fascinating but I don’t let it affect what names I like or would use). I place more importance on connotations and associations I have with them.
  5. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys? I think it’s great. Gender is a social construct anyway.
  6. Does name popularity influence your name decisions? 100%. I could never use a name that became super popular, even if I loved it.
  7. How much do other Berry opinions influence your name decisions? Not an awful lot. In the sense that other berries give great suggestions for new names and combos, yes, because I take a lot of that on board and have discovered a lot of favourites that way, but I don’t like to hop on the berry favourite trends or let négative views of my names phase me.
  8. What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-English names in an English-speaking country? It frustrates me that we put such a focus on accommodating to others who can’t be bothered to learn the pronunciation. It’s really not that hard to learn how to pronounce someone’s name or ask them if you’re unsure from just reading it off the page so I don’t see it as a big issue. But maybe if I were somebody with a name that people struggle to pronounce I’d get frustrated at always having to pronounce it for people over time. I’m not sure.
  9. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you follow naming trends? Not directly no. I wouldn’t say I follow trends but obviously I end up discovering some names while they are having a bit of a comeback so in that sense yes I do I guess.

  1. What was the FIRST name you can remember loving? Do you still like/love it now? I remember my first doll was called [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]. I hate it now but to be fair I was about 2 years old when I named her.
