Tell me the story behind a favorite name of yours. I don’t really have any great stories, but I figure I’ll talk about one of my boy names that means a lot to me since I don’t really talk as much about those. Growing up, my mother always read the [name_m]Little[/name_m] House on the [name_u]Prairie[/name_u] books aloud to me and my sisters, and we watched the TV show together, too. [name_f]My[/name_f] sisters and I used to pretend that we were [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], and [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], and thinking about it brings back such fond memories. That is why I have [name_u]Wilder[/name_u] as a mn for one of my boy names (currently [name_m]Henry[/name_m]), after [name_f]Laura[/name_f] Ingalls [name_u]Wilder[/name_u]. The name evokes the imagery of golden prairie under a clear blue sky and the feeling of my childhood.

What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? I’m all for alliteration if the names flow well and vibe well together! I had [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] on my list for a while, which I quite like.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] name meanings matter to you? Yes. The meaning doesn’t necessarily make me like or dislike a name – I have many names on my list that I love, even if I don’t love the meaning. But for a name I am going to use irl? Then, yes, the meaning is important to me.
What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys? Not a fan. However, there are some unisex names that have been deemed “feminine” because they are more popular for girls, but that I much prefer for boys (e.g. [name_u]Morgan[/name_u], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], etc.).
Does name popularity influence your name decisions? To some extent… I would tend to avoid using a name in the Top 10-15, but, otherwise, it’s more important to use the names I love, regardless of popularity.
How much do other [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions influence your name decisions? Only a little. I do seriously consider opinions I receive when I ask for them, but I won’t discard a name I love just because it isn’t Nameberry’s cup of tea.

If they don’t mind correcting people all the time, go for it! I don’t know what I myself would do, but I think, again, using the name I love is more important.

What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? I like some in theory but I’d never use them in real life. Does [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] count?
Do name meanings matter to you? Yes, right now I like to think about the meanings of combinations. I’ll want to avoid names with meanings related to the [name_u]Christian[/name_u] God in the future
What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls and traditionally feminine names for boys? If you think that feminism’s biggest issue is that someone is naming their daughter [name_u]Asher[/name_u], then you need to crawl out of the rock you’re living under and look at the world. No, I don’t like boy names on girls because I think there is something better about boys than girls. I think it’s cute. Nothing more. Gender barriers are meant to be broken and I’d love to see more names make the transition from boy/girl to unisex.
Does name popularity influence your name decisions? Absolutely. I hate having a popular name and it’s negatively impacted my self-esteem. I will absolutely not use a popular name.
How much do other [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions influence your name decisions? I want to hear if there’s a negative international association with a name (ex. [name_f]Ziva[/name_f] being the Israeli Hebrew word for gonorrhea) but other than that, not really.
What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-[name_f]English[/name_f] names in an [name_f]English[/name_f]-speaking country? I don’t like a lot of long names so this isn’t applicable for me. I think it’s fine if it’s a quick fix but if it’s something that people could reasonably get wrong multiple times, it might be worth reconsidering or finding a nickname.

3. What is the longest name/combo on your list? I don’t know. I’m judging this by syllable count, and I can’t find any combo over 6.

5. Tell me the story behind a favorite name of yours. The idea of [name_u]Lupine[/name_u] came from a trip to Mt. [name_m]Saint[/name_m] Helens. While I was there I learned that [name_u]Lupine[/name_u] flowers were the first plants to grow in the lava ash after the eruption. I looked up the plant more after that and found that it embodied all of the characteristics I would want a daughter to have, how they thrive in harsh conditions and how they improve the places they’re planted in. (I also know they’re a dangerous invasive species in some places, but I don’t care). I also loved the connection to wolves, as wolves are very important to modern [name_m]Pagan[/name_m] cultures.
6. What is the newest name/combo on your list? Pride. I’m still mulling it over, I’m not sure it works yet. I love the idea of it.

Tell me the story behind a favourite name of yours Fiadh [name_u]Marin[/name_u]: I love [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] for so many reasons, but mostly because I am Irish and have a soft spot for Irish names. [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] means wild, and as someone who loves nature and also values letting kids be wild, it means a lot to me. It also bears similarity to the Irish words for warriors and deer, and my favourite animals are deer since when I lived in Japan, I lived in a city populated by sacred deer. As for [name_u]Marin[/name_u], it’s an honour name for a part of my family who has lived in [name_u]Marin[/name_u] County CA for decades, and I genuinely just find that part of the world very beautiful. I live in a very multicultural area, and it is so so so easy to learn how to pronounce someone’s name. I think that learning how to pronounce someone’s name is a matter of basic respect and choosing not to on account of the majority language in an area is just rude and entitled.

I don’t feel like I have super special stories for my names, but I have been meaning to talk about [name_f]Lisette[/name_f] [name_f]Sunday[/name_f], since nobody’s heard my reasoning yet. [name_f]Lisette[/name_f] has been on my list for a long time, but when I rewatched the movie [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] recently, it really started to sparkle! The character in the movie is just so sweet! (She’s the florist, so now the name [name_f]Lisette[/name_f] gives me the best imagery!) [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] is a reminder to keep the sabbath holy, and really just holds a lot of religious and emotional significance to me! The combo overall just give me sunny, happy and elegant vibes!

(I just did first names because I really didn’t want to check out SSA data for every single middle name too)
What is the most common/popular name on your list? — Unfortunately, almost all of my first names have been rising in popularity over these last few years, which I find tragic! (But I mean I can’t really blame people for it, they’re great names!) So most of my names will be likely becoming more popular in the years to come. Do name meanings matter to you? — Yes! I much prefer names with a good meaning to them, especially ones that (subtly) communicate things I hope for in children. ([name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] have meanings related to happiness, etc.)
What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys? — Okay so like, this is a tough one for me because I totally understand the merits of more gender-neutral naming, I just personally am not super keen on any of the names myself, at least not enough to ever really consider using them. [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] on a boy will always be better than it is on a girl though!
Does name popularity influence your name decisions? — I wish I could say it didn’t but it does. I’m not super obsessive about it, and if I love love love the name I’ll put up with it being ranked higher, but in an ideal world I’d like all my names to be out of the top 50 at least. (Unrealistically I’d like them outside of the top 100, but that’s not probably going to be the case with most of my names)
How much do other [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions influence your name decisions? — Somewhat? I like seeing what other people have to say about my names and other people’s names, but at the end of the day everyone has their own tastes and I don’t put much stock into differing opinions.
What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-[name_f]English[/name_f] names in an [name_f]English[/name_f]-speaking country? — So my name has a silent “d” in it. It is not intuitive in any way to most [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers (but at least it sounds the same to a popular name, so it’s not completely impossible for people to remember). I’ve always loved my name, and I don’t ever remember having a problem with it being different. I know I have the personality to be able to hold an uncommon name though, and realistically I know not all children would be the same. So, my advice would be to, as always, pick the name you love, especially if it ties to your or the child’s heritage and culture in some way, but if it’s difficult to spell or pronounce, try and have something with a nickname to fall back upon, or at least use a middle name that is a bit more common or intuitive. Hopefully the child will grow into their name and be proud of it in every way, but if by any chance they don’t feel that way, they have something they are more comfortable with to use without much hassle. Also if a child decides they don’t like their name for any reason, don’t give them a hard time for it, even though it might hurt you since you spent so long picking it out and it means so much to you. Support your child, they’re the ones that have to live with the name.
Do you follow naming trends? — [name_m]Just[/name_m] a tad obsessively. I’ve got so many websites bookmarked with different ways of organizing name data, even from all sorts of countries and provinces that I don’t live in! I don’t know why, I’ve just always found it super interesting.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like/love it now? — When I was 6 and obsessed with the 12 Dancing Princesses I fell in love with the name [name_f]Isla[/name_f] because it had a silent “s” in it. While I think it’s super pretty as a name now, it’s really not my style anymore. But let the record show that 6-year-old me was way ahead of the naming curve!
Cutest matching names for twins? — I’m really not keen on matching initials or sounds for twin names (or even sibling names really if I can avoid it), but I do like a very subtle theme! Though at the moment I like the idea that the first middle would be something honoring a family member in one way or another, it is non-negotiable to me that the second middle name of any and all children that I have would be [name_u]Rooney[/name_u], since that’s my maiden name.

MY LIST

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]! Been my top girls name for years.
[name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] are equal.
Most of my combos average at about 5 syllables across both names ([name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u], [name_m]Luke[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] etc.) I think the longest name overall is [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m].
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is the shortest.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] is our top choice if we ever have a girl. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] because it’s lovely, classic, and the name of my partner’s favourite villain! [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] because it’s my late mother’s name, I resisted using it for a long time because I don’t love the name, but in this combo I really do.
I think [name_u]Tobin[/name_u] [name_m]William[/name_m] is the newest name, although both names have been on the list in some way for a long, long time.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] has been on my list for the longest.
On my ‘short list’ the most underappreciated is [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
[name_u]Tobin[/name_u] and [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] are the most unusual on the shortlist, on my big lists I probably have more unusual choices.

OPINIONS
42. I very much dislike [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_u]Camille[/name_u], but I know others love them.
43. I really can’t think of many that everyone dislikes and I love? I think a lot of the very ‘plain’ names and some of the clunkier ones - I do really love [name_f]Magda[/name_f] and [name_m]Ottomar[/name_m] which I don’t see get a lot of love, but I doubt they’re hated! I do also like [name_f]Neveah[/name_f], for the sound if nothing else.
44. Alliterative names: Personally I don’t love alliterative names, but I see a lot of names in my job and they’re actually really common! I work with a lady called S@lly Sp@rks, and I think that’s pretty cool! I mentioned it my partner and we agreed alliteration wouldn’t make us rule out a name, but if we didn’t already super love it then it would be a mark again it. E.g. we sort of like the names [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], but our surname is [name_f]Hailee[/name_f]. We don’t like [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] enough to make the name alliterative.

Personally I prefer to stick to traditional gender lines with names, although I have much more leeway with names that have changed over time, so I’d be totally down with [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] and [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] on a boy, for example. But I also generally don’t think names have genders, so people can do what they want.
47. Popularity: A lot of my top names are in the top 50 in the UK, so I would say I’m not that bothered by popularity. I’d maybe try to avoid the top 10, but if I really love a name I don’t care - and I can always go a bit weirder in the middle name slot if I want.
