I’m considering using this as a potential middle for a possible future daughter, to honour my mum. To be honest I’m don’t really like the name despite the fact that I love my mum and she is sort of my hero. Another problem is that my DH and I tend to like names that end with A…
Is there any first names you think would work quite nicely with it? My favourite so far is [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Allana[/name], but [name]Lucy[/name] is quite common where I live. We are sort of looking for French girl names, but it is not a requirement and in the end it has to work with the name [name]Susannah[/name] (our daughter).
Or is there another way we can honour her without using her name? My mum loves dragonflies, but I cannot seem to find a name that means dragonfly.
You’re right, using [name]Allana[/name] (or [name]Alana[/name], the more standard spelling) would really preclude any first name ending with -ah, as it both starts and ends with the same sound, and the middle vowel is an -ah sound too.
If your mum really, really loves dragonflies-- such that it will immediately bring a smile to your face and remind you of her each time you see/hear your daughter’s name-- I would suggest using a few scientific names from the dragonfly family (since I too know of no name related to ‘dragonfly!’):
[name]Lydia[/name], for the Common Whitetail, Libellula lydia
Ashna, for multiple species whose genus name is Aeshna
[name]Flavia[/name], for the Yellow-winged Darter, Sympetrum flaveolum
[name]Cordelia[/name], for the Downy [name]Emerald[/name], Cordulia aenea
[name]Margarita[/name], for the [name]Texas[/name] [name]Emerald[/name], Somatochlora margarita
[name]Julia[/name], for the [name]Julia[/name] Skimmer, Orthetrum julia
Demoiselle, as dragonflies are also called damselflies
[name]Junia[/name], for the [name]Green[/name] Darner, Anax junius
[name]Danae[/name], for the [name]Black[/name] Darter, Sympetrum danae
Also, anything reminiscent of the appearance of the dragonfly:
[name]Lucy[/name] [name]Allana[/name] flows well and I think [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Susannah[/name] work well together too. I like some of the suggestions above though-- what about [name]Susannah[/name] and [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Flavia[/name], [name]Cordelia[/name], or [name]Margarita[/name]/[name]Margaret[/name]/[name]Marguerite[/name]?
[name]Danae[/name] and [name]Amanda[/name] are both types of dragonflies, also. If there’s a name she’s always liked you could use that. Or just let her pick a name.
[name]Glad[/name] to have helped-- you have an embarrassment of riches here, in terms of great names.
[name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Margot[/name], [name]Juliette[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name] can all pair very well with a second name ending in a vowel. Multiple combination sound great–
