While most associate Merlin with the wizard, it’s also the name of a beautiful raptor class bird!
There’s also Kestral, Meadowlark, Starling, Finch, Swan, Nightingale, Heron, Hawk, Martin (purple martin), Teal, Sora, Veery, Dunlin, Harrier, Whimbrel, Towhee, Junco, Mallard, Phalarope, Wigeon, Cormorant, Falcon/Gyrfalcon, Merganser, Brant, Partridge, Albatross, Fulmar, Egret, Osprey, Willet, Turnstone, Murre/Murrelet, Phoebe (black phoebe, say’s phoebe), Vireo, Magpie, Jay, Tanager, Grouse, Oriole.
Names that don’t have bird meaning but are birdy by association:
Peregrine (peregrine falcon)
Caspian (caspian tern)
Sabine (sabine’s gull)
Pomerine (pomerine jeager)
Vaux (vaux’s swift)
Anna (Anna’s hummignbird)
Costa (costa’s hummingbird)
Calliope (calliope hummingbird)
Rufous (rufous hummingbird)
Willow (willow flycatcher)
Hutton (hutton’s vireo)
Williamson (willamson’s sap-sucker)
Clark (Clark’s nutcracker, Clark’s grebe)
Townsend (townsend’s solitaire, townsend’s warbler, etc.)
Piper (sandpiper)
Swainson (swainson’s thrush, swainson’s hawk)
Brewer (brewer’s sparrow, brewer’s blackbird, etc.)
Vesper (vesper sparrow)
Rosy (black rosy-finch, gray-crowned rosy-finch)
Despite being both a name nerd and a birder, I know a lot more bird names than I do names with bird meanings. I tired to keep it just to names I could see people reasonably using! Some are obviously more adventurous than others.
