Alternatives for Claudia and Blythe

We have a little girl arriving in [name]July[/name], and are trying to find common ground. We need help!!

Our short list is very short, but there’s an issue with each name:

[name]Claudia[/name]: My DH’s list of one. I actually think it’s beautiful, but I can’t get past the meaning. (Lame, in Latin.)
[name]Eloise[/name]: Our frontrunner, until a family friend used it for her little girl born last week. (BOO)

Names I love that DH has nixed:
[name]Blythe[/name] (I am so depressed, I love this name endlessly)
[name]Greer[/name]
[name]Sloane[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]
[name]Isla[/name]

Our constraints:
Our last name ends in a “y,” so any names that end in that sound will be too rhyme-y. Nothing too “cute” or trendy - I want her to have a name that will grow with her. (I personally use the resume test – if I saw the name as a potential hire, what would I think?) The meaning has to be positive, and there has to be a good nn OR no nn at all (a la [name]Blythe[/name]). We tend to like very classic, old fashioned names.

Ideas appreciated!

[name]Blaine[/name], [name]Blaire[/name], [name]Gweneth[/name], [name]Arden[/name], [name]Mila[/name], [name]Milena[/name], [name]Claudine[/name], [name]Claudette[/name], [name]Owen[/name], [name]Gemma[/name], [name]Yvette[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Louisa[/name] & [name]Anja[/name] come to mind. I haven’t looked up all of the name meanings, but these seem to go along with your list imo.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Claudia[/name]…I understand that name meaning is important to you, but most people wouldn’t know it. I didn’t know what my name meant till I was much older and looked it up myself!

Oh what a shame, I’m 100% with you on [name]Blythe[/name], its just fantastic.

Other ideas:

[name]Fern[/name]
[name]Ada[/name]
[name]Cleo[/name]/[name]Clio[/name]
[name]Helen[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Martha[/name]

I didn’t know the meaning of [name]Claudia[/name] until you just posted it. I seriously doubt very many (if anyone) else will know it. It’s a beautiful name. My given name is a derivative of the Finnish word for “dirt”, if that makes you feel any better about [name]Claudia[/name].

[name]How[/name] about…

[name]Clementine[/name], [name]Celina[/name] or [name]Cordelia[/name] (for [name]Claudia[/name])

[name]Beth[/name] or [name]Beatrice[/name]/[name]Beatrix[/name] - nn [name]Bea[/name] (for [name]Blythe[/name])

I wouldnt totally rule out [name]Claudia[/name] unless that meaning will seriously bother you. Lots of names have less than stellar meanings. The whole [name]Mary[/name]/[name]Marie[/name]/[name]Mara[/name] family means “Bitter” but are also listed as “[name]Beloved[/name]” in other sources. My names [name]Caroline[/name] and I distinctly remember my second grade teacher passing out a page with the meanings of every student’s name and seeing that mine meant “[name]Little[/name]” :frowning:
Now I have rarely seen that meaning since then, but I guess it’s out there.

So while there’s always a chance your daughters teacher will pass out a page that says “Lame,” I’ve also seen [name]Claudia[/name] with the meaning “Persevering”…so much nicer!

Thoughts on other options:
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Amara[/name] (I just love the meaning on this one: [name]Lovely[/name] [name]Forever[/name] or Everlasting)
[name]Cypress[/name]
[name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name]

I myself am intrigued by the name [name]Claudia[/name], but am wary to use it because of it’s meaning… I just found this link; maybe it will be helpful to you–> Claudia | The amazing name Claudia: meaning and etymology

Thanks everyone for your ideas! Two others that I am now kicking around are [name]Justine[/name] and [name]Bronwen[/name].

iwillpraise, this is a great and really interesting interpretation. Maybe it will help me get over my issues with [name]Claudia[/name] - that would make my husband’s day (year)!

Thank you! I hope it does help! [name]Claudia[/name] is such a lovely name ~ very different from it’s meaning! I’ve grown to realize that my love of the names [name]Claudia[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] make me love the name [name]Clarice[/name] even more! Could [name]Clarice[/name] be an option on your list as well? It is so very similar. Check out my thread. It will explain more:
