My husband and I are expecting our first child, a boy. We want the initials A.E. after his great, great grandfather. He was [name_u]Addison[/name_u] [name_m]Ellsworth[/name_m], but we’re afraid of naming a boy [name_u]Addison[/name_u] since the girls have taken it over. We both [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_u]Aiden[/name_u], but it is so wildly popular. I kind of like [name_m]Asher[/name_m], but that’s popular, too. [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] is ok, just reminds me of Kutcher, but DH likes it.
I’ve considered, and DH has shot down:
[name_m]Alston[/name_m], [name_m]Anson[/name_m], Ashden, Addisten, [name_u]Alden[/name_u], [name_m]Aiken[/name_m], Anden, [name_m]Aaron[/name_m], [name_m]Austin[/name_m], and [name_m]Aston[/name_m]. (Guess I like 2-syllables ending in “n” Didn’t notice until I typed them out.) He likes very traditional names, like [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], but I don’t like that one. Neither of us likes [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]. Middle name will most likely be [name_m]Ellsworth[/name_m] or [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] (both family names).
Not sure if we should just suck it up and go with [name_u]Aiden[/name_u], since it is the only one we both love (plus, I’m Irish). Being a [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] from the late 70s, though, I hated having everyone else around me with the same name.
I’m really at a loss, so any suggestions would be appreciated!
My favourite A’s for boys are a little odd, some of them, but forgive me:
[name_u]Ari[/name_u]
[name_f]Azaria[/name_f]
[name_m]Alan[/name_m] - Starts with A, two syllables and ends with -n but a bit elderly I know. I love it anyway. Definitely not trendy. Irish.
[name_u]Aidan[/name_u] - The only spelling of [name_u]Aidan[/name_u]/[name_u]Aiden[/name_u] etc. that I like.
[name_u]Avi[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Arturo[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Alastair[/name_m]/[name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] - Gaelic form of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], bit more “interesting” maybe.
[name_m]Aron[/name_m] or [name_m]Aharon[/name_m] - Legit foreign language forms of [name_m]Aaron[/name_m]. Not pronounced the same way.
[name_m]Avram[/name_m]
[name_m]Amos[/name_m]
[name_u]Akiva[/name_u]
[name_m]Adriel[/name_m]
[name_m]Avidan[/name_m]
Azarael/[name_m]Azriel[/name_m]/[name_m]Azrael[/name_m]
If you and your husband both love [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] than you should go for it, though I much prefer the original [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] spelling. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though both spellings are popular, I think [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] carries a certain sense of history, tradition, and sophistication, whereas [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] seems more trendy and insubstantial. Kind of equivalent to [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Khloe[/name_f] or [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] vs. [name_m]Jaxon[/name_m]… But whichever spelling you prefer, I don’t think the name is quite as ubiquitous as [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] was in the 70’s and 80’s (I actually don’t know a single one!) I really like [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] [name_m]Ellsworth[/name_m] or [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_m]Ellsworth[/name_m] for you (since [name_u]Addison[/name_u] means son of [name_m]Adam[/name_m]). [name_u]Addison[/name_u] [name_m]Ellsworth[/name_m] is a really awesome name by the way!! Best wishes for your baby boy
These are my favorite A boys’ names. Sorry for repeats:
[name_u]Auburn[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_m]Armistead[/name_m]
[name_m]Amias[/name_m] (I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] this one. I think [name_m]Amias[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] would be really handsome!)
[name_m]Ansel[/name_m]
[name_m]Armand[/name_m]
[name_m]Aubin[/name_m]
[name_m]Anton[/name_m]
[name_u]Auden[/name_u]
[name_u]Auberon[/name_u]
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_m]Adam[/name_m]? [name_u]Addison[/name_u] means “son of [name_m]Adam[/name_m],” so [name_m]Adam[/name_m] seems like the closest option. [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_m]Ellsworth[/name_m] or [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] would be great.
We had decided on [name_u]Aidan[/name_u], but DH has tonight decided that he isn’t sure. We’re back to square 1. He is shooting down everything except [name_m]Adam[/name_m].
Ok. I love the name [name_u]Aiden[/name_u], but felt it was overused. However, that should never stop you from using a name. Besides, avoiding a popular name often backfires. I chose [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] for my daughter’s name and everyone I talked to hated it. They kept saying it was an old lady’s name, which bothered me because that’s what I had to deal with growing up being the only “[name_f]Frances[/name_f]” in my entire school. But, when I looked at SSA, “[name_f]Sophia[/name_f]” ended up being #2 on the list for her birth year and was then #1 for the subsequent two years. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you choose what you think is less common, it might just be the year it becomes common anyway. So, I say suck it up and choose [name_u]Aiden[/name_u]. You both love it and, if it feels right, that’s what matters.
