ducks to avoid heavy objects that are surely being flung
I usually HATE kreeaytyff spellings, but I for some reason have a name-crush on [name]Alyss[/name]. [name]Alice[/name] has been a favourite of mine for a long time, but I’ve seen [name]Alyss[/name] online and in a book before and it’s a variation with a slightly different feel that I kind of like. So is it that bad? Or are messed-up spellings just messed-up spellings?
Yes, it is not only the legitimate spelling of [name]Alice[/name] in Welsh, but it also was the only spelling of [name]Alice[/name] ([name]Alys[/name]) in medieval [name]England[/name]. I love the spelling [name]Alys[/name], and pronounce it exactly the same as [name]Alice[/name]. It is not a “creative” spelling when spelled [name]Alys[/name].
I would also pronounce it Uh-liss, like [name]Alyssa[/name] without the last ‘a’…
My name is spelled differently, and while I’ve always had to spell it for people, I still like it. So I wouldn’t let that worry you too much.
I second all the love for [name]Alys[/name] but not so much [name]Alyss[/name]. I actually prefer [name]Alys[/name] over [name]Alice[/name]: I love the name [name]Alice[/name], it’s delightful, but I personally see the word “lice” when I look at it : (. I would, however, still consider it, because it’s solid.
[name]Alice[/name] is what I’d go with if you love the name… but for alt spellings, I think the one “s” instead of two, or even [name]Alyce[/name] are best.
I would caution you to think very carefully about using unusual spellings.
Having an unusual name myself (although I love my name) I have spent a lot of my life having my name misspelt and misspronounced which can be tiresome and frustrating. People even argue with me about how my name SHOULD be spelt or pronounced. Guaranteed this will happen to your daughter if you use a less ‘common’ spelling.
This child will go through their entire life spelling and pronouncing their name for others.
You might love it, your daughter may tire of explaining and spelling it for the rest of her life. Can you already picture her explaining it’s the welsh version of [name]Alice[/name]?
If your heart thinks [name]Alys[/name] then go with it.
I’d go with [name]Alys[/name]. @mmljar1 I don’t think people will see it as being “yoooneek” outside [name]Wales[/name]…lots of people are aware of cultures outside of [name]America[/name].
