My husband and I are thinking of naming our son [name]Ignatius[/name] [name]James[/name]. My husband loves this name and is almost dead-set on it unless I say no. I actually really like it, but I’m worried it might be too cumbersome for a real boy.
Some people have said it sounds smart, playful, and creative. Others think it sounds musty, nerdy, and socially awkward.
Most children in my area have names like [name]Jacob[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], and [name]Emily[/name] - names I find boring. I’m worried that my child might stick out as “weird” because of his name. Although, I do know a [name]Tobias[/name] and [name]Ambrose[/name] (names I both love).
I’m not sure whether I should go on board with my husband, or try to convince him of something a little less “out there.” He seems to prefer intense, unusual names. His favorites are [name]Ignatius[/name] and [name]Augustine[/name]. I really like [name]Xavier[/name], [name]Raphael[/name], and Aidric.
These are names on our list:
[name]Ignatius[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Francis[/name]
[name]Xavier[/name]
[name]Raphael[/name]
[name]Isaiah[/name]
[name]Augustine[/name]
Aidric [name]James[/name]
Any thoughts and honest feedback would be appreciated, especially on [name]Ignatius[/name]. Should I be brave and go for it?
If it’s good enough for [name]Cate[/name] Blanchett, why not ;p
Aside from the nickname [name]Iggy[/name], which I don’t care much for, [name]Ignatius[/name] fits in really well with current trends: [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Maximus[/name], [name]Cassius[/name], so in theory it’s just one step further. If it seems like a really big name when he’s small, you can use [name]Nate[/name] or [name]Nat[/name] as a nn as well.
Your husband has good ideas !
I’m agree with you [name]Jacob[/name], [name]Emily[/name] are obviously nice but they are boring, because they are very heard.
I like [name]Ignatius[/name], [name]Isaiah[/name], [name]Tobias[/name] and [name]Augustin[/name], spelled like this. With “e” it’s a feminine form for me.
Wow! What a name! If you love it, go for it.
I’d call him [name]Nat[/name] or [name]Iggie[/name], they may ‘fit’ him better until he ‘grows into’ his name.
I love [name]Ignatius[/name]! If it helps I know three, one a 60 something ‘[name]Iggy[/name]’, a ten year old [name]Ignatius[/name] and a 50 something [name]Ignatius[/name]. They are from Poland, Australia and Hong Kong so it’s a pretty international name. I think it’s great, unusual but definately useable. Go for it!
I don’t think [name]Ignatius[/name] is any “bigger” of a name than [name]Xavier[/name], [name]Raphael[/name], or [name]Augustine[/name]. It is clunkier, however. My favorite from your list is [name]Raphael[/name] or [name]Augustine[/name].
I don’t care for the name but if I met a little [name]Ignatius[/name] or [name]Iggy[/name], I wouldn’t think his parents were crazy, it’s a pretty awesome name.
I like your husband’s taste. All of the names on your lists strike me as Catholic saints’ names, and they’re all lovely.
I think [name]Ignatius[/name] is wearable with children named [name]Jacob[/name] and [name]Emily[/name]. With children names [name]Brynlee[/name] and [name]Kayden[/name], he might have it tougher. And if there is a little [name]Ambrose[/name] in your circle, he’ll fit right in.
A nn is essential, and I’m with other posters in disliking [name]Iggy[/name]. What about [name]Nate[/name], or [name]Nash[/name]?
I love unusual names…great choice! My 3 month old son’s name is [name]Madigan[/name] [name]Roux[/name]. Most people have never heard of either name and react by saying “whaaaaat”? The majority of people end up liking it but I honestly wouldnt care if they didn’t. As long as I like it and he likes it thats all that matters. iI did my best to minimize any teasing potential but kids are relentless…they will always find something to tease about anyways. If he doesnt like it someday he can always change it. I didn’t want my son to have the same name as anyone…I want to give give the opportunity to be original. I dont want him to have the same name as 3 other kids in his kindergarten class. Variety is what makes life interesting!
The only think I don’t love about [name]Ignatius[/name] [name]James[/name] is that both names end in -s sounds, which gets a little breathy/hissy (esp. since [name]James[/name] is short, so they’re almost back to back unlike [name]James[/name] [name]Ignatius[/name] would be). I myself would sub in a different middle name (perhaps [name]James[/name] has a deep family meaning, though?) and hold on to [name]Ignatius[/name]. [name]Nate[/name] or [name]Nash[/name] are dreamy nicknames that help keep [name]Ignatius[/name] from seeming too out there.
[name]Ignatius[/name] is a great name but yeah, it’s kinda difficult. It’s definitely the most whoa!-worthy of all the names on your list. I know you already know that and I guess you’re trying to gauge how extreme the reaction is going to be, but of course that depends on the person, and also how well your child will handle it, and of course that depends on your child. Naming him [name]Ignatius[/name] [name]WILL[/name] set him apart from the crowd and give him a name that will always draw comments. I love the idea of [name]Nate[/name] or even [name]Nash[/name] or [name]Nat[/name] as a more “normal” fallback if you end up with a tender-hearted little boy. And I’ll go against the crowd here and say I think [name]Iggy[/name] is adorable, though it’s gotta be the only kid who will brush it off if [name]Iggy[/name] devolves into Piggy.
There are similarities between [name]Ignatius[/name] and your other choices but I do think it’s the toughest of the bunch. [name]Augustine[/name], [name]Raphael[/name], and [name]Xavier[/name] are all very handsome with a lot of style and history but kind of morph more easily into cool guy names [name]Gus[/name], Raph or [name]Rafi[/name] and X. While I like to think that I would be brave enough to go with [name]Ignatius[/name], I’m afraid that in real life I might opt for one of your other, also-wonderful choices.
I actually really like [name]Ignatius[/name]. I think [name]Iggy[/name] is almost inevitable, but I like it. [name]Pam[/name] brings up an excellent point about it devolving into Piggy. My mind didn’t go there, but I’m probably not as imaginative as your average 8 year old.
Be brave! I would love to meet an [name]Ignatius[/name]. Uncommon names are becoming increasingly common; chances are you would be surprised if you looked at the roster of your local elementary school. [name]Ignatius[/name] isn’t any more or less elaborate than [name]Isabella[/name], and with names like [name]Augustus[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], and [name]Maximilian[/name] seeing fair use, I don’t think that [name]Ignatius[/name] will stand out as much as you think it will. Is [name]Ignatius[/name] a bold choice? Certainly! But it’s so much better to take the risk.
I like the possibility of [name]Nate[/name] as a “tame” nickname.
