[name]Scarlett[/name] - Gone with the wind, the [name]Scarlett[/name] Letter ([name]Nathaniel[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name])- Yes, I think of [name]Scarlett[/name] O’[name]Hara[/name] from Gone with the Wind, but this name has been used a lot recently and most people wouldn’t have an immediate connection of [name]Scarlett[/name] with Gone with the Wind.

[name]Cosette[/name] - [name]Les[/name] Miserables- yes. [name]Victor[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] is said to have invented this name- not sure if that’s true, but it’s definitely the earliest usage I’ve heard of.

Doesn’t mean those names are not usable, though. People will think of your [name]Casper[/name] instead of the ghost, your [name]Atticus[/name] and your [name]Ryder[/name]. [name]Cullen[/name] and [name]Hudson[/name] are quite obvious to me, and the meanings I see will always be there for me.

I think once you meet a child with these names, the associations become weaker, because your association with the kid is stronger.

Yes to the above ones. Though for [name]Troy[/name] I think of the character from ‘Community’ and for [name]Sawyer[/name] my secondary reaction (after [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name]) is [name]Sawyer[/name] from ‘Lost’.

[name]Cullen[/name] and [name]Cosette[/name] are the one’s I’d say you couldn’t use because of their associations. [name]Cullen[/name] is ridiculously Twilight, there’s no avoiding that even though it was a surname before the god-awful books came out. And [name]Victor[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] made up [name]Cosette[/name] (and others). It literally means ‘little thing’ and was just a nickname for the character Euphrasie.

This is what I think of (that was fun!). But honestly, if you love the name, I wouldn’t let that deter you only because there are other ones out there. There will always be someone else (or a character) with that name.

[name]Casper[/name], [name]Cullen[/name], [name]Atticus[/name] & [name]Cosette[/name] are the only ones that I would immediately associate. I think it’s probably because these names aren’t used a lot so people stick with the one example they have? Like [name]Ben[/name] [name]Franklin[/name] is a famous [name]Benjamin[/name] but you don’t automatically think of him because [name]Benjamin[/name] is a very common name. But a name like [name]Cosette[/name] is barely seen (I’ve never seen it anywhere but [name]Les[/name] Mis, actually) so when you do, you associate it with that one reference. That being said, I don’t think any of these associations should stop you from using a name. None of the associations are bad & associations fade with time anyway!

[name]Troy[/name] - Nope, it’s been used for a lot of things. I would first and foremost think of it as a normal name, but if you specifically asked for connotations, I would think of the Trojan War.
[name]Toby[/name] - I personally might have [name]Toby[/name] Ziegler spring to mind, but it would be because I am a huge [name]West[/name] [name]Wing[/name] fan. [name]Toby[/name]'s a common enough name to not have any one particular connection.
[name]Ryder[/name] - I would think of either [name]Kate[/name] [name]Hudson[/name]'s son or [name]Ryder[/name] from Glee. But I haven’t seen Tangled. I’m sure a lot of kids would think of that character, but they’d probably think it was cool.
[name]Sawyer[/name] - [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] is definitely the inspiration for this name and pretty much the only connotation for it. [name]Twain[/name] took the name from a term sailors on the Mississippi [name]River[/name] used for hidden logs that would sink ships. But [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] is a great connection for a little boy! It’s a literary classic and [name]Sawyer[/name] is becoming a popular name.

[name]Scarlett[/name] - Gone With the Wind is the first connection I think most people would make, or else [name]Scarlett[/name] Johannson. But this name is rising in popularity as well, so people might think you just picked a pretty name.

Names That Would Remind Me Of Something But Wouldn’t Be A Big [name]Deal[/name]
[name]Troy[/name] - Honestly, I think of the city of [name]Troy[/name] first, and I don’t think that’s a big deal. The name isn’t my style, but if you like it, then go for it.
[name]Sawyer[/name] - [name]Tom[/name] [name]Sawyer[/name] and I also think of lawyers. But I don’t think it’s a big deal. It’s a nice name.
[name]Everett[/name] - Mt. [name]Everest[/name] isn’t a bad association. Besides, it is slightly different.
[name]Hudson[/name] - There’s nothing wrong with place names, dear.

[name]Casper[/name] - Friendly ghost. Whenever there’s an empty seat, we always say it’s [name]Casper[/name]'s seat. So that might not be fun for him haha.

[name]Atticus[/name] - I love the literary ties and I think [name]Atticus[/name] [name]Finch[/name] is an awesome kick-butt character, but I just think this name is tacky. It’s completely uncommon (or at least it is where i live) so it would just seem kind of pretentious.
