So I have this random name crush on [name]Shelby[/name]. I know it’s sickeningly outdated trendy [name]Ashley[/name]/[name]Kaylee[/name] type of name, but I really love it. Am I the only one?
I think [name]Shelby[/name] is precious. [name]Love[/name] it.
[name]Shelby[/name] is sweet and to me it’s a different feel from those others. All the -by names are (I can only think of [name]Kirby[/name] and Whitby right now, but I know there are more), I mean it’s related to the -lee/ley thing by sound and by place name meaning, but it’s just different. None of them, including [name]Shelby[/name], ever got as hugely popular as [name]Ashley[/name] or [name]Kaylee[/name]. And to me, [name]Shelby[/name]'s from a different period – maybe it’s just because of the age of someone I know with the name, but it seems like more of a 70s name to me, [name]Ashley[/name] was more 80s, and [name]Kaylee[/name] was more 90s. [name]Ashley[/name] and [name]Kaylee[/name] are more popular girl names, and to me [name]Shelby[/name]'s a bit more bookish, do you know what I mean? Nothing wrong with any of those points, I’m a bookish woman with a popular-girl first name, it’s all good : D.
I’ve always loathed [name]Shelby[/name]. I just don’t see the appeal in the sound, or the feel, or anything. It does strike me as a [name]Kaylee[/name]/[name]Tiffany[/name]/[name]Ashleigh[/name] kind of name.
[name]Shelby[/name] fits into the same category as [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]IMO[/name], which is trendy, but not quite as trendy as [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Kaylee[/name] etc. I don’t particularly like the name, but I don’t hate it either.
[name]Shelby[/name] drink your juice. I think [name]Steel[/name] Magnolias made me love this name. B/c of the movie, I associate it as a very Southern name. But the character is a good one, so it’s a good namesake! I like it (and I don’t normally like names that end in Y).
It’s actually [name]Steel[/name] Magnolias that made me dislike this name, or at least harbor my dislike for so long. I just don’t find the sound of [name]Shelby[/name] appealing or feminine and I always wondered why [name]Sally[/name] [name]Field[/name] who had several older boys and finally had a baby girl, would name her [name]Shelby[/name].
[name]Just[/name] my opinion though! I agree with pp who said that since [name]Shelby[/name] really never was that popular, it doesn’t seem as trendy as [name]Ashley[/name]/[name]Kaylee[/name]. Although to me, the movie dates it.
I love the name [name]Shelby[/name] now, but I used to think of it has being hillbilly-ish. I don’t think it fits in the same category as [name]Ashley[/name]! [name]Even[/name] though it is a little outdated, it’s not as overused as [name]Ashley[/name] is. It’s totally useable now. I’m 22 and I’ve only known two [name]Shelby[/name]'s that are close to my age compared to the eight [name]Ashley[/name]'s I can think of just from the tiny highschool I went to!
I am nor hillbilly nor Southern and my name is [name]Shelby[/name]. As a child, I hated it because it meant “willow farm” but now, I love it. There are very few names I can imagine being called otherwise. And I’ve met only one other [name]Shelby[/name], who spelled it with [name]Shelbi[/name]. I much prefer my own spelling. I agree, I don’t categorize it with [name]Ashely[/name], but with [name]Jocelyn[/name].
