I’ve posted in the past about my struggle to conceive and how thinking baby names helped pass the time while I waited for motherhood to become a reality for me. Now, after 8 years, I am finally pregnant! I am almost through my first trimester now, and I took the Sneek [name_m]Peak[/name_m] early gender test and got a girl result back. Despite having been thinking about baby names for YEARS I cannot deiced on a name.
I’ve considered and discarded, for one reason or another:
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] / [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Anika[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]
[name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]
And the list goes on. So many beautiful names but nothing that feels like THE ONE. Or I’ll find a reason that it doesn’t work. [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] sounds too southern belle. [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] would always have pronunciation issues. [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] might put people in this cultural paradigm, in mind of the ditzy [name_f]Buffy[/name_f] character rather than [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables, which was the first thing I thought of and etc. etc. etc.
So I wonder if I’m not making this too hard on myself? I’ve been thinking baby names since I was 16 and the names that have always consistently been on my girls list are [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Perhaps I should stop struggling to find something absolutely gorgeous and spectacular and use [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. They’re the only ones that have stayed on my list consistently over the years, whatever other spectacular names I loved in the moment. I want my little girl to love her name and I wanted to give her something really beautiful that would wow people. But maybe I’m trying too hard? Opinions? Suggestions? All are welcome.
Congratulations! I also spent years dreaming about names before having my daughter so I know how unreal it can feel when everything is coming true. You’ve come this far, I’m completely sure you’ll find the perfect name.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is classic and gorgeous. You do not need to keep looking if this is THE name for your baby girl. Use what you love and don’t over analyze it. ([name_f]Alice[/name_f] is one of my daughter’s middles… I’ve always loved it.)
That said, not to complicate things, I like [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_u]Arden[/name_u] (all [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables for me), [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] (my second daughter will be a [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]).
As someone who has long loved the names [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Emily[/name_f], I think you may be onto something with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. There are many, many names I enjoy encountering and I love to think of creative combinations, but the pool of names I could imagine actually bestowing and using daily is significantly smaller. At the end of the day, I love the timeless classics best. I would you encourage to seriously consider [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
I think it’s natural when you’ve spent so long thinking about something that nothing will feel quite perfect and that you’ll want to think through every element of it.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] has a sweet simplicity. It’s sturdy, safe and versatile.
I really enjoy a lot of your names -[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Anika[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_u]Arden[/name_u] in particular.
My advice is to remember you’ve still got plenty of time to pick a name. Something might begin to really shine and feel right, either as you go along or when baby is born
Congratulations! Coming up with names when you’re pregnant is really exciting
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is absolutely beautiful and if those names have always been on your list then you can’t go wrong with the combo. It’s classic and sophisticated.
In saying that, I do really love some of your other names. [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] are really beautiful and [name_f]Anika[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f], and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] are also lovely names. For me, [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] would be absolute perfection but as I said, [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is a beautiful name.
My only issue with it is that [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is so commonly used as a middle name and for that reason, for me at least, it’s lost some of its appeal. In saying that, I love it as a first and think [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_u]Arden[/name_u] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] would make stand out names.
Good luck! And sorry if I didn’t help give you any clarity at all!
I adore [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_u]Arden[/name_u] from your list! [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] was on my list for a long time (I’ve since swapped around the middle name).
I get what you mean!
Maybe try imagine calling your daughters name or introducing her to people. What names sound the most natural?
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are lovely options. I love the idea of either of those as a first name paired with a more “daring” middle
I can understand this, although haven’t had any children and am not pregnant.
What I mean is, I have my future DDs name picked out - [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] is the only name that never budged from the #1 spot and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is my great-grandmothers name who I never got to meet.
I think of all these other beautiful, whimsical, and fantastic names and combinations. They are truly wonderful and breathtaking, and in comparison [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] feels boring and a bit…meh. But I still believe I will use that over any other combination I come up with. Because I love it, have loved it for years and couldn’t imagine having a daughter named anything else. The other names - they’re just for fun. Yes they’re great, but they aren’t my DDs. So, if that makes sense, I kinda get what you mean. I guess the trick is perhaps to not overthink it.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful. So simplistic and classic. I’d love to meet an [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are all lovely too.
Oh and congratulations! I hope you find something perfect for your DD. I have no doubt that you will
It is easy to love so many names but so much harder to come up with THE name that is right for your baby. If you continue to come back to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] again and again, I think that’s your name.
When I began reading this and saw your naming style, my first thought for you was [name_f]Freya[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (as the goddess of fertility and since you struggled for so long with this). I thought it might be a nice way to commemorate that, if it’s something that you’re interested in doing.
But [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is classic. There were many other lovely combos on your list as well. I think it’s just the pressure of naming a person, which is something I struggled with too. There are so many names I love, but I would never use them.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is lovely! I’m sure that once your DD is born, she will infuse the name with all of her unique personality and make it her own, and you will fall even more in love with the name.
I second gabriellenz, if you want to play around a little bit still, why not try [name_f]Alice[/name_f] with some alternate middles? I love these options:
I do believe that you are overthinking a little bit; it’s completely fine for your top choice to feel a bit “expected” considering you’ve loved it for years. Maybe that’s just me, but I don’t think trying to wow people with your pick is the right strategy when it comes to naming children. [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t get me wrong, as a name nerd I definitely understand your desire to use something offbeat, but then I’m pretty sure it’s the person who makes the name, not the name that makes the person.
I guess it will be easier for you to decide once the baby is here, but I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is a beautiful combo for what it’s worth. You really can’t go wrong with a list like yours, I like all of the names mentioned a lot.
I honestly think going for a name that you have loved non stop for years rather than current name crushes is the way forward. Name crushes come & go just like real life crushes whereas when you love something it’s stable and long lasting which is what you want.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] is charming, ethereal and elegant. She’s dependable you can’t go wrong with [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is simply gorgeous. Either [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are great combinations so yes go for it : )
This all being said you will never regret naming her [name_f]Alice[/name_f] if that’s what 16 year old you would have done. I named my son my favourite since age 16 and never regretted it a bit.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful. Dreaming up spectacular names for fun and naming an actual human being are two completely different things.
I love the name [name_f]Freya[/name_f], but I have a rat with that name. Unfortunately, I’ve used quite a lot of good names on animals over the years, because I worried it might be the only way I got to use them at all.
My favorites are the two [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] options and [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I think all your names are so beautiful!
Oh man, I so get you! I’m 20 weeks pregnant with my third (but first girl), and the pressure to find the perfect name feels really intense. Neither of my sons were named until birth and in both cases their names weren’t even on my favorite list before that pregnancy. In some ways that has me doubting my long-time favorite girls names this time around. I’m finding myself wishing a fortune cookie would just tell me her name. So, I think I get you.
That said I adore, adore, adore the name [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. It is friendly and classic and a bit quirky at the same time. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful. And it does not sound expected from an outside view. If you’re not set yet, I’d keep [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in the front and start experimenting with different or additional middles:
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is gorgeous! If you’re not set on it though, I would suggest thinking about what qualities you [name_f]DO[/name_f] want in a name. So far it sounds like you want something easy to pronounce, without any strong cultural associations and something with a vibe other than “southern belle.”
Also: you mentioned wanting a name that will wow people. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] wows me, but keep in mind that overall people have widely varied naming styles and there probably isn’t a single name that is universally wow-ing. I’d say pick something you love and don’t worry about other people!
Totally understand all your thoughts! Choosing a name is hard. I’m just going to say, by far, my favorite name on that list is [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. Maybe it’s because I’m a die-hard southern baby name fanatic. But, it’s also so classy. If you’re a nickname person, [name_u]Scout[/name_u] or [name_u]Noli[/name_u] would be precious!!
[name_m]Just[/name_m] calling in to say that if you do not use [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] Wildflower from your signature I would like to steal it <3 so beautiful!
Good luck with naming a real human! Alice is a classic and I personally love Rose, also.
