Am I missing any associations?

I have 2 names, if I have a boy in the upcoming future. I love them both and know I can’t decide until I meet him. But I ran across a new association for one of them today and it makes me uncomfortable not to know of an association beforehand. It won’t change my mind, but I want to know what people immediately think of.

So I have [name_m]Elio[/name_m] and [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] with the nn [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] or [name_m]Oz[/name_m] (those of you who are on this forum a lot will recognize this, I’ve posted a few different threads, thank you for your continued input and patience with me!!)

[name_m]Elio[/name_m]

  • I fell in love with this name from the movie Call Me By Your Name. So I’m aware of the association and, as a fierce LGBTQ+ ally, I’m absolutely happy with it.
  • EDIT - A few people I know believed this to be a Jewish name, but the lovely Berries have helped me discover that it is not. My donor is part-Jewish so this wouldn’t have been a problem anyway. Thanks everyone
  • This is a Spanish/Italian variation of the Greek [name_f]Sun[/name_f] god [name_m]Helios[/name_m].

[name_m]Osiris[/name_m]

  • A [name_u]Berry[/name_u] suggested this name for me in my first post! This is an Egyptian god of the dead or underworld. He appears on an episode of Supernatural as someone who wants people to be honest about both their good and bad parts.
  • The meaning on this site is “with strong eyesight” which will certainly not happen because both my donor and I had laser eye surgery to correct our vision
  • This is also a brand of shoes.
  • There is a video game called [name_f]Lara[/name_f] Croft and the [name_u]Temple[/name_u] of [name_m]Osiris[/name_m].
  • I typed this name into Facebook to see if it’s common or who has the name. It is mostly a name for men, but there’s a few women. I have no issue with this. Also, nearly everyone is Hispanic. I’m very curious to see if anyone here knows if there is a cultural reason for this trend, as I am white and do not want to inappropriately overstep cultures.

[name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] / [name_m]Oz[/name_m]

  • The musician [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] [name_m]Osbourne[/name_m]. I’m not a huge fan of his, but I do LOVE rock and metal, so I’ve been told this name fits me very well.
  • And of course the [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m]. I’ve heard [name_m]Oz[/name_m] used for characters in various movies and TV shows but none of big significance to me (apart from a werewolf in [name_f]Buffy[/name_f], I’m cool with that association).

Sorry for the long post… Is there anything I missed??

The only additional thing I could think of was that all my Australian friends pronounce ‘Aus’ as [name_m]Oz[/name_m]

@MeggieSpazz I’d never have thought of that, thank you!

I don’t think there’s any significant association that comes to mind.

I do know a few [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] but I’m Hispanic so it’s a common name. I wouldn’t say I’m a fan though. [name_m]Elio[/name_m] I can’t really see it as a name as I know a girl named [name_u]Elia[/name_u] that was called that as joke due to the fact she wasn’t very feminine according to people’s standards. So to me it just has a negative connotation related to bullying and mean kids. It also sounds just like [name_m]Helio[/name_m] (Helium).

[name_m]Oz[/name_m] is great, I do reckon I would associate it to Dr [name_m]Oz[/name_m] and well [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] would definitely be a very difficult name to pull off just because of [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] [name_m]Osbourne[/name_m]

@sweetcaroline I totally forgot about Dr. [name_m]Oz[/name_m] Thank you!

I’m not concerned with [name_m]Elio[/name_m] being mistaken for a girl name. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] and new teachers reading the role would say [name_u]Michael[/name_u] or [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] on accident and I was teased for it. I was a tomboy so I was called [name_u]Michael[/name_u] often. Kids are gonna bully whoever they want to bully, for any reason they can come up with. Besides, I’m extremely feminist and plan to instill in my future son that derogatory feminization of men isn’t something to be concerned with. It’s closed-minded and not in line with our values.

And with [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m], like I said, as someone who frequents rock concerts, and plans to continue this for the rest of my life, a little [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] will fit right in with my scene

I know the majority of people (especially on this site) dislike my baby names, but I’m completely ok with that  I just wanted to know if I missed anything, and I’ve already learned more!

Ooh! And [name_m]Frank[/name_m] [name_m]Oz[/name_m], best known as Yoda from Star Wars.

There’s nothing that comes to mind for me. I just wanted to say that [name_m]Elio[/name_m] is one of my favourite names! I also first heard it in Call Me By Your Name, which is now one of my favourite films ever. [name_m]Elio[/name_m] is one of our top picks if we have a son next.

@TDFM Goodness, yes! It’s a wonderful movie  I don’t know how anyone can walk away from seeing it and not love the names [name_m]Elio[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] (but [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is much too common for me to use, even tho I’ve always like it)

@MeggieSpazz oooo I love that! I had no idea lol

Elio is the only choice I like. I’m jewish myself and I think it’s very cool that you may tie a name to your donor. That being said, I’m afraid [name_m]Elio[/name_m] is not a Jewish name… it doesn’t sound jewish to me (Hebrew names don’t typically end in and -IO sound) and it doesn’t appear on any of the Hebrew name lists I’ve seen that are legitimate. Perhaps it was a jewish character’s name, but he’s fictional… I’m thinking his first name is Italian and his last name (Perlman) relates to his jewish heritage. [name_m]Just[/name_m] an FYI

@Jujubee1 I’m a bit confused by the connection with Judaism too (not that I’m an expert at all). In the movie I mentioned, the character [name_m]Elio[/name_m] is Jewish. And I told my friend’s mom that I was considering [name_m]Elio[/name_m] and she said, “Isn’t that Jewish?” And she’s definitely never seen CMBYN. So… I guess if some people happen to think, “Why did you give your kid a Jewish name,” I feel good about telling them his bio dad is Jewish - Again, avoiding cultural appropriation is extremely important to me lol

Hmm. So strange! I’m around a lot of Jews and would never ever think it’s a Hebrew name. Hebrew names or words just don’t end in -IO like I said… but that IS common in Spanish and Italian names… I think your friend’s mom just doesn’t know… so don’t assume most people would ever think it’s jewish if you’re worried about cultural appropriation. If you look up [name_m]Elio[/name_m], it says it’s Italian which makes perfect sense for the movie. Someone can be religiously jewish and have an Italian name  [name_u]Elie[/name_u] (pronounce [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]), [name_u]Eli[/name_u], [name_u]Elan[/name_u], and Elad are the closest, most recognizable, real Hebrew names to “[name_m]Elio[/name_m]”.

Elio is cool! Nice choice to have!

I feel the same way about [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it but it’s much too common sadly.

BTW, I agree with @Jujubee1 - I don’t think [name_m]Elio[/name_m] is Jewish. The character is (made clear by his surname) but as far as I’m aware [name_m]Elio[/name_m] is either Italian or Spanish (it seems Italian but I’ve also read Spanish so I’m a bit confused).

The name may have been given to a Jewish character in CMBYN, but [name_m]Elio[/name_m] is actually Spanish and Italian derived from the name of the Greek sun god, [name_m]Helios[/name_m].

I can’t think of any other associations! Both seem like solid choices

@shells15 Yes I knew of the Spanish/Italian association with the Greek god (as mentioned in my post). I love god/goddess names so I’m very happy with this!

Elio immediately made me think of Ellio’s Pizza- not a bad association, but a strong one for me. Also, a quick Google search brings up [name_m]Elio[/name_m] Motors which apparently makes three-wheeled cars, though they haven’t been released yet.

Osiris made me think of [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]- like [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] the Great [name_m]King[/name_m] of [name_u]Persia[/name_u], and the character [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] on the E! show The Royals. Obviously not the same name, but that’s the association my brain made :slightly_smiling_face:

@Nameyname ahh thank you so much! The pizza association is EXACTLY why I made this post  It doesn’t change my mind, but if I hadn’t realized this, I can see myself introducing my son as [name_m]Elio[/name_m] and someone saying, “Like the pizza?” and me being like, “Um, what?”   These are the things I want to know beforehand!

Yeah the name [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] has more associations than [name_m]Osiris[/name_m], and I know a lot of people who hear the name will picture it spelled “ocyrus.” I was on the fence about this name until I realized it goes with the nicknames [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] or [name_m]Oz[/name_m]. I absolutely love them, as nicknames, not full names. Plus I love the “dark” background of [name_m]Osiris[/name_m].

I can appreciate the irony of [name_m]Elio[/name_m] being a “light” name while [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] is a “dark” name

I believe many years ago there was a cable series(HBO?) called [name_m]Oz[/name_m]. It was about a prison. [name_f]My[/name_f] boyfriend loved it. I remember watching some episodes. It wasn’t bad from what I remember but it was a very adult show.
