Am I the only one that hates the name [name]Duke[/name]? It reminds me of “Dookey” you know, slang for crap basically. I’ve always hated it and i guess I’m a bit biased. I was wondering if anyone else had these same feelings about the name or if you like [name]Duke[/name], why do you like it? (I’m not being judgmental I’d just like an outside opinion)
Maybe they’re just [name]Green[/name] [name]Day[/name] fans and love the Dookie connotations? It’s not my style either. I spent years caring for a horse named [name]Duke[/name], so to me he will forever remain an elderly palomino.
I did a double take when I saw your sig, by the way; [name]Ernest[/name] and [name]Lowell[/name] are two of my frontrunners.
I also think it is awful. It sounds too close to dookie, dude, doof, douche. I think it is more of a pet’s name. Also, I think built-in title names are kind of sad, and definitely tacky. [name]Princess[/name], [name]Queen[/name], and [name]Majesty[/name] are not okay, so why would [name]Duke[/name] be? [name]Just[/name] my opinion, though. I was somewhat surprised in previous threads to see quite a few berries like it. Meh, everyone has their own preferences…
It’s not terrible. I’d be happy to meet a [name]Duke[/name] in real life. However, I would never personally use it.
To me, it’s a dog name! Actually, my first thought is of [name]Duke[/name] Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian surfer. I think it’s an okay name, but there was recently an Australian couple who had trouble registering their child as [name]Duke[/name] because it’s a title.
After 3 girls we are due in Sept, this time with a surprise.
I love the name [name]Jonas[/name], my husband likes [name]Pheonix[/name].
To me it’s too trendy, I don’t like the meaning and it dosent shorten well.
Our daughters are:
[name]Miah[/name] [name]Lily[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Annika[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
Can anyone help me with a new name that is somewhere in between?
Thank you!!
It’s always been an iffy name for me. I want to like it but it’s so harsh and abrupt. It makes a great nn though
It never hurt film cowboy [name]John[/name] “[name]Duke[/name]” [name]Wayne[/name] so I don’t get all of the hate. It’s a strong nickname but I wouldn’t use it for a first name.
Meh I dislike it too. My first association was with it being a title but yes, it is a bit of dog name. Perhaps the pronunciation would change you view of it? It’s pronounced DYOUK (like juke) over here, rather than DOOK
Aw, I actually don’t mind the name at all. Though I probably wouldn’t use it I wouldn’t mind hearing it on someone else. Like [name]Giuliana[/name] and [name]Bill[/name]'s baby :).
I have a friend who just named her baby [name]Van[/name] [name]Duke[/name]… super cringe.
I’ve heard it a few times, but it’s usually a family surname. I know one [name]Duke[/name] that was named after the university though…
I think of it as a dogs name although I don’t really like it.
I have a cousin who just used this name for her son, it’s not completely terrible but it does feel like the halfway point between naming your kid Cowboy or [name]Princess[/name]. I feel like it’s more accepted because of it’s flat sound and similarity to [name]Luke[/name].
I know a [name]Duke[/name], but his real name is [name]Louis[/name]. Apparently when he was a kid he was all in the “me do it” stage only it came out sounding like “me duke”, so they called him [name]Duke[/name]. To my knowledge no one has called him [name]Louis[/name] since. So it doesn’t sound weird to me on a person, at least not a grown man, HOWEVER I would worry about giving it to a child who would have to grow up potentially being teased because of the similarities to the words dude, doof/doofus, douche, et c.
But on the other hand, it’s kind of a badass name. Like I could see a [name]Duke[/name] being a really popular, cool, nice guy in high school/college and everyone loving his name, but he’d have to have the personality to pull it off. If [name]Duke[/name] was shy and wimpy he’d probably get teased for it a lot.
I’d never heard of ‘dookey’ as slang for crap. [name]Duke[/name] just makes me think of [name]John[/name] [name]Wayne[/name].
I don’t like it but I don’t dislike it either. It’s one of those “neutral” names.
NO! I think it is dreadful. I think of “[name]Roll[/name] that beautiful bean footage” from the baked beans commercial. Dog’s name all the way.
I think it depends a lot on where you live. Where I’m at I feel it would probably have a lot more of a cowboy/ [name]John[/name] [name]Wayne[/name] association than a noble title or a “rhymes with/sounds like” association. I find it quite useable.
Its better than [name]Marmaduke[/name] coughBearGryllscough
