I’m trying to get some outside-of-the-family opinions on [name]Amelia[/name] Alaphair for our daughter, who is due in [name]January[/name]. I realize the name Alaphair is a little unusual but it was actually my great-grandmother’s name. She was 45 when she had her last child–born healthy and normal–and being an older mother myself (40) I’ve taken a lot of hope from her story. So I thought of honoring her with the second name.
For myself I think it sounds magical but can also carry over well to adulthood. Our goal is that she not have a name that shuts doors for her. I guess what I’m concerned about is that as a whole it sounds too rural.
I think Alaphair(e) is lovely and I particularly love your story! Alaphair is a little bold so I do think middle is a good spot. It definitely is a magical combo. I don’t get rural at all - it feels pretty sophisticated! I can see a judge or senator [name]Amelia[/name]. [name]Amelia[/name] Alaphair is nice. (Slightly) different syllable lengths (3.5/4 vs 3), different overall sounds in them. The one drawback might be that with a name ending in a and a name starting in a, there’s sort of a little hiccup between them. I don’t really consider that any sort of problem but I know some people will comment on it. I think if [name]Amelia[/name] is the name you love above all others this isn’t worth worrying about - it’s too lovely : D. If you are open to other names though you might consider a name ending in n, t, s, l or other consonants (I think those are the most common) and try to avoid 3 syllable names where possible.
If you want further suggestions post here and you’ll get them but if you just want reassurance on [name]Amelia[/name] Alaphair you definitely have it from me!
The only issue I see with [name]Amelia[/name] Alaphair are the abundanace of a’s in the names. But really, family meaning trumps any other problem so I encourage you to go for it! I’m really digging Alaphair - it sounds like a elfin princess that Tolkien may have used in his novels.
I am digging Alaphair as well. I’m mostly familiar with it as “Alifair” or “Alafair” but for honoring purposes, I’d want it to use the original spelling.
[name]Amelia[/name] Alaphair is a little heavy on the “a” sound, but it is melodious and light, giving it a very elegant feeling. I like it a lot!
