I don’t know why, but I have it in my head that this works for some reason.
Logically, I know it doesn’t; there is no B or ‘il’ sound in [name]Amelia[/name]. But I just think when said aloud, it comes quite naturally. It would probably only stick as a family nickname.
[name]Amelia[/name] is one of my all time favourites, and it’s a family name too, and I also really love [name]Billie[/name] at the minute, and I think somehow my mind has brought them together. It’s not the first time it’s happened either, a year or so ago I thought, for some reason, [name]Ophelia[/name] nn [name]Polly[/name] was a good idea.
What do you think - it doesn’t work, does it? What would you think if somebody introduced themselves as an [name]Amelia[/name] who went by [name]Billie[/name]?
I could actually see [name]Billie[/name] working. [name]Millie[/name] is a nickname for [name]Amelia[/name], right? For example, [name]Robert[/name] has the nickname [name]Robby[/name], that eventually went to [name]Bobby[/name]. [name]Margaret[/name] has the nickname [name]Meg[/name], that eventually morphed into [name]Peg[/name] or [name]Peggy[/name]. I could see how [name]Amelia[/name] would go from [name]Millie[/name] to [name]Billie[/name]. I think it’s fine. Now [name]Ophelia[/name] with the nickname [name]Polly[/name] is a different story…
I actually can see it, and I can somehow see [name]Ophelia[/name]/[name]Polly[/name] too. I guess we’re on the same wavelength. My great grandfather’s family had eleven children, the first three of whom were girls who were given normal female names but were ALWAYS called by the names [name]Billie[/name], [name]Bobbi[/name], and [name]Pete[/name], which had no obvious connection to their real names. [name]Bobbi[/name]'s real name was [name]Louise[/name]. I don’t know the other two women’s real names because they were just Aunt [name]Billie[/name] and Aunt [name]Pete[/name] to me. Their nicknames stuck until they died in their very old age. [name]Amelia[/name] can be [name]Billie[/name] if you so choose, even if there is no rhyme nor reason for it, and it will catch on fast with family and friends.
I think [name]Amelia[/name] “[name]Billie[/name]” is pretty cute. I agree that it’s a bit of a stretch, but with [name]Edward[/name] “[name]Teddy[/name]”, [name]Josephine[/name] “[name]Posy[/name]”, [name]Margaret[/name] “[name]Meg[/name]”, etc. that randomly changes letters, I think [name]Amelia[/name] “[name]Billie[/name]” is pretty cute. I don’t know if it’s as legitimate as [name]Josephine[/name] to [name]Posy[/name], but it works. I always had thought I’d get away with [name]Maggie[/name] for [name]Agnes[/name] or [name]Agatha[/name] due to the same logic.
