Amelia vs. Emilia

My husband and I finally got our BFP and I’m super excited to welcome the little bear in [name_u]June[/name_u]. But in the last week, I’ve noticed several friends naming their new pets the name we’ve had planned for a girl for a while. And I can’t unsee it as a dog’s name, so we’re back to square one. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is a beautiful, beautiful name, but my friend’s new ratty looking small dog kind of killed it for me.

We don’t agree on many names. The only other two we both agreed on were [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Audrey[/name_f]. My sister is naming her baby [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] in [name_u]January[/name_u].

My husband is stuck on the name [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I think it’s a really pretty name, and I love [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as a nickname. My only concern, and it isn’t a huge one, is the rising popularity. I suggested [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] as a suggestion, but we’re concerned about how close it is to [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. The concerns are the same size in comparison.

The middle name would be [name_u]Blair[/name_u]. Last name starts with a W and has a double L in the middle.

Thoughts?

Both are lovely choices. And it’s comforting to know that even rising popularity doesn’t amount to as many babies as it used to. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the top 1 or 2 names might have only a couple of children in a classroom bearing the name. I think the days of [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] A. and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] S. and [name_f]Ashlee[/name_f] P. and [name_f]Ashleigh[/name_f] Q. are over!

I like the combination with [name_u]Blair[/name_u] for either name. Which one do you find easier to say? I don’t think you can go wrong here.

Congrats on your BFP! Wishing you a healthy and happy pregnancy!

I love both [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]! [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] was my great-grandma’s MN, so I’m partial to it for that reason, but I love the Shakespearean tie to [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and the sweet nn [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] (which I’ve loved for years). I like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] over [name_f]Amy[/name_f], but I’m starting to love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] almost equally. I used to prefer [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] on both counts. I, too, love [name_f]Mia[/name_f], though!

I’m torn myself, though–[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]'s probably easier to spell, but [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]'s more unusual. I don’t know. I think [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] works better, stylistically, with [name_u]Blair[/name_u], but [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] could work really well, too.

I think I’m voting [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], but both are gorgeous! I love the subtle difference in sound with [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] as opposed to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], too.

I think [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] is lovely.

I vote for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u]. Congrats on your BFP!

I love both [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (prefer this spelling :)) but [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] sounds/flows much better than [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] cause of the B sounds.

I’m in the same boat as you with [name_f]Luna[/name_f], only I did it to myself by naming my cat that.

I vote for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u]! Both of the names are lovely, but as someone who grew up with a name that is constantly misspelled - I would worry about the constant misspelling if her name was [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. I also prefer the nicknames that come with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] ([name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f]) over the nns for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], just because [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is also a really popular nickname.

Whichever spelling you choose, I’m wishing you joy and happiness with your beautiful girl. Congrats!

I vote for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u]! It’s so much more interesting to me, and when I see [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] I can’t help but think “ah-MEH-lee-uh” (even though I know most people pronounce them both the same way). I think you can get all the same nicknames from [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] that you can with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but I personally think [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is more elegant.

Good luck either way, they’re both great :).

I like both names but being from the UK [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (pronounced [name_m]AH[/name_m]-me-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]-ah) is just too popular for me. I love [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] though, it’s familiar but a little less common, it also can have the nicknames [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]. In terms of being close to [name_f]Emily[/name_f] I personally don’t see it as a problem as I pronounce them differently [name_f]EM[/name_f]-ih-lee compared to EH- me-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-ah

I like both with the middle name [name_u]Blair[/name_u] and personally I don’t think you can go wrong with either.

I like both names and think they both sound great with [name_u]Blair[/name_u]. My concern with [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is that when it’s spoken, it sounds just like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] to me. And it could get tiresome correcting the spelling and/or pronunciation of her name constantly. I know an [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] whose nickname is [name_f]Millie[/name_f]. I think you could get most of the same nicknames from either name.

I don’t know where you’re located, but as pps have indicated, if you are in the US, there is almost no difference in pronunciation. I think they’re both totally fine and you will have a great name no matter which way you go. Which is to say, my best advice is… flip a coin.

I much prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]! A wonderful classic. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I know [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is a legitimate name, it feels like a unique spelling.

Agreed with @janinemk
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (to me) sounds so similar to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], she will have to correct ppl very frequently/have her name misspelled.
Also nns for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] ([name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Em[/name_f]) would just sound like [name_f]Emma[/name_f]…
That is my opinion…also with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], you get the connection to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Earhart[/name_f]

I prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I would go with what you love. If popularity it’s your only concern I would ask myself that if both names were equaly popular which one would I choose: [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]? That answer to that question should be your favourite from those two. Both of them flow well with [name_u]Blair[/name_u] as a middle, so it’s really your choice.
I like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], but I don’t think it flows as well as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] iwth [name_u]Blair[/name_u].

I’d go with [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u] just because it’s a little different and I like different  I also feel like the [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] trend has died down. It seemed to more popular about 5-7 years ago, at least where I’m from.

I like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_u]Blair[/name_u]. Or [name_u]Blair[/name_u] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].
